Hid's in Fog Lights

Got a question, yesterday I installed an hid kit in the fogs on my 98 camaro. Someone told me awhile back that because when you hit unlock and lock on the remote the fogs blink that, that can cause something to burn out. Not exactly sure what, was just told because the hid's draw so much more voltage then stock bulbs that it can be a problem...and if so does n e one know if this is true? and if it is...is there any way to disable these bulbs from blinking when I lock or unlock the car? also for anyone interested ill try to post the pictures of the fogs some time in the next day or so

if you keep the fog switch in the off position when you turn off/park the car, when you lock/unlock the doors, they wont flash. The only reason they do flash is that they are connected to the parking lights circuit, so when those flash.. the fogs go on/off as well.

try it for yourself, its been a while since i used my SS but im pretty sure thats its deal.

and btw, HIDs do not draw more than a regular bulb. less actually. Thats why HIDs have an ignitor and ballast, to take the regular 12v and convert it to hid requirements which i think is like 25k volts to ignite and 10-15k to sustain the burning gas.... but as for burning out the ignitors, a constant on off could affect them over time.


and..lol... i do believe there is a way to set your keyless entry to NOT flash any of the exterior lights and not sound the horn. instructions for that should be in the owners manual.

Yeah, HIDs don't like to be flashed. (Keep this in mind when using the high-beams, as the stock configuration turns the fogs off when the high-beams are activated*).

To keep the fogs from flashing when you use the key fob, just flip the fog switch to the "OFF" position. Voila.






*There is a write-up somewhere that shows how you can alter the wiring to allow for all 6 lights (fogs, lows & highs) to stay on at the same time. Granted, it's against the law to have 6 lights on at the same time (hence the factory settings), but this will eliminate the on/off of the fogs if you have to flash your high beams.

ok thanks guys...im going to try it when i get home from work...also i dont really use my high beams and will even less with the hid's cuz they r brighter then my high beams anyway

If your HID foglights light the road ahead of you better than your stock high beams, then you have some serious issues with one or both sets of lights and should get that straightened out ASAP. Foglights are designed to light up the road immediately ahead and to the sides of you car, not far up the road ahead of you.

wasnt refering to my fogs...im getting hid's for my low beams also and they r brighter then a halogen high beam

Yes they do draw less overall power however the starting requires quite a bit of current which over time can deteriorate the stock wiring.

You sound pretty dead set on getting these however the stock housings are going to cause a lot of glare with a HID lamp thrown into them. Sure you will get a nice color but output is going to be scattered. A lot of people do it so just offering my $0.02.

i actually already have them in the fog lamps...they dont really cause much glare at all...and for the low beams, the whole kit cost me $45, so if they cause a glare that bothers me i can always take them out.

the glare blackbird is talking about is the blinding ull be doing to the oncoming drivers... dont be an ******* and blind others so u can have cool lights, get the projector housings

so i can spend $45 on hid's that arnt even as bright as factory hid's in alot of the newer cars(and this makes me an a**h***) or i can spend $150-$200 of projector headlights...no thanks

This will be my last preaching and I will let this be but drive a car with a HID kit in a stock halogen reflector housing and then jump into one with at least a projector and let me know how the light compares. Call me a lighting snob if you want, but blinding oncoming drivers is not something I recommend and aiming the lights so far down negates most of the purpose of HIDs anyway.

OEM HID's are 35W systems and you can get a 55W system from a lot of places. I use 55W systems in my 98+ bird headlight setup and it performs extremely well. Comparing a system versus another with the same wattage will be simply a contest of how the light is controlled and projected outward (sans any other factors).

Up to you in the end but I would get at least a projector housing before I toyed with throwing some HIDs in them.

The brightness is not the issue here. The issue is that halogen bulbs and HID bulbs distribute light in completely different ways. Toss an HID bulb in a halogen housing and 9 times out of 10 you will be projecting a light pattern that is very scattered. This scattered light pattern blinds oncoming drivers. A housing designed for an HID bulb will project the light properly - the easiest way to do this retrofit in most cars is with a projector.

Just because you want to look cool on the cheap doesn't mean that you are doing it right. And chances are, once you get done with this cheapo swap, you'll actually have less usable light output.

I just put the angel eyes into my camaro today. 4 HID Headlights for $120 and its really bright, also has the blue halo on all 4
