A few friends and I want to go take an offroading adventure somewhere in south jersey. We all have stock trucks (my silverado, an xterra, and a toyota fj cruiser). Anybody know a good trail that these vehicles will be able to handle, but is not boring that is close by Marlton?

There is Wharton State Forest, which is on the other side of Atco, just off of 206. Colliers Mills is just on the other side of Fort Dix at the intersection of E. Colliers Mill Road and Hawkin Road. Stay on the trails in both places. Wharton has more challenging terrain, but there are paths around all of the stuff that would give you trouble. Colliers Mills doesn't have anything really challenging, but it's still a good time and very scenic.

Here's a map from Marlton to the Atsion Ranger Station @ Wharton: http://tinyurl.com/342pcp5

Not sure what might be closer to you in Marlton, never been off roading anywhere over there.

Do not go down the powerlines at colliers mills in a stock truck. I out water in the cab of my 87 Chevy on 36 TSLs in the black mud hole. I was double locked and still got stuck.

Mike, me and my jeep crew go out in tabernacle to carrenza memorial. It's just off 206, very stock vehicle passable. My buddy took his girls bone stock yj and I seen a stock gmc Jimmy (s10 style) make it through the puddles. Just stay to the edge of them.

Aren't the powerline trails off limits anyway? I seem to remember seeing no trespassing signs there last time I was back there.

They may be off limits to enter from the fire roads its self but to enter from stump tavern is completely legal. I know because some friends got caught out there at like 12am one night and the rangers told them its dawn to dusk rules and they are considered legal hunting, hiking, and horseback riding trails.

Ahh, I've never gone in from Stump Tavern, only from Hawkins Road behind New Egypt Speedway. I stick mostly to the trails by Collier's Lake and between Dix and Lakehurst.

Apple Pie Hill was eh. It is a fire tower with a locked door at the top. Much cooler place is Quarter Mile/Carrenza. Nicer place to chill out.

There are hundreds of trails in Wharton that a stock truck can handle. Off Atsion Road is Goshen Pond Campground (Shamong) and there are some nice trails back there. All passable in stock form. Apple Pie hill is cool as well. You can find some nice trails off of Chatsworth Rd in Tabernacle as well. Anywhere in that general area you will not be disappointed

The trails mostly are do-able in Wharton as long as you know what you're doing. Making sure mud holes / water holes don't have ruts in the bottom from some jerk with 44" boggers who wanted to be funny. Making sure that you have a second vehicle with you (its almost ALWAYS a good idea to have a second at all times with you) if you want to try something you think you may get stuck on. I cant tell you how many times we have pulled out the person going solo. Wharton can turn you around quickly....its happened to almost all of us that I know who have gone back there.

Hell, my Ram got swallowed by ground that seemed solid, but was not. There was about 7" of hard ground and probably 35+" of muck underneath of it. I went to pull a u-turn and the ground just collapsed and I was sunk, no getting out.

Dude, I know a metric SH** TON of trails. I have been almost everywhere! Apple Pie Hill, Quarter Mile, all of Carranza, Hidden Lakes, pole lines, power lines, and almost all the camp ground areas. You name it, I've probably been there. If I didn't trade my truck for the GTO I could lead the way. If you ever want to take my buddy (knows some trails that I don't) and I along we can show you some sweet trails and what to go through and what to stay away from. You can PM me if you want.

Only wheeled Wharton a few times, but very true. Lots of water crossings and some deep, thick mud. Make sure that all of your stock trucks have good solid tow points front and rear, and each of you should bring a tow strap (No metal hooks). Part of wheelin' is getting stuck. It's more fun (And less expensive) if you're prepared to get yourself unstuck.

Very true.

Side note - do you hang out with the High Point Mudslingers club? I heard on JeepForum that there is a guy trying to open an offroad park on his land in Wantage and I figured those guys would have a hand in it.

No, although I do see a lot of their rigs all the time. The folks I've met in that club are pretty cool, but I'm already a member of another club that I'm heavily involved in, so not thinking of joining another. I'd love to see an off road park in my own backyard, though and would definitely support the effort!

I am actually a member of the North Jersey Jeep Club (www.northjerseyjeepclub.org). We promote legal wheeling in a family-friendly atmosphere, and do monthly runs to wheel (Mainly Rausch Creek in Joliet, PA). Only requirements are that you be 18 and own a Jeep to join the club, but anyone can join the forum. (Please excuse the shameless plug).

No no dont make me out to be one of them. I think theres nothing wrong with Jeeps at all. And I'm pretty sure I've been through this before and possibly with you.

I have a problem with people that are like "O well you dont have a jeep? You cant be in our club loser. How could you possibly think any other 4wd vehicle has the capacity to accomplish what you can in a Jeep"

Personally I think everyone should shut up about what brand they drive and get out and wheel and have fun. It kinda pisses me off when its Wharton Jeep Club instead of Wharton 4x4 Club and the people are so adamant about that they literally discriminate against any other brands like its a black guy walking into a whites only diner in Mississippi in the 50's.

Personally I feel that Jeep drivers with that kinda attitude brings hatred upon everyone that drives them.

Yeah, if you don't have a Jeep, you can't be in our club, loser. It's called the "North Jersey JEEP Club," not the "North Jersey 4 x 4 Club." But I think comparing it to the Civil Rights Movement is a liiiiiitle too far out. It's no different than, I don't know, say, an organization called "New Jersey F BODY OWNER'S ASSOCIATION." Yeah, yeah, I know...people here have F bodies, and 'Vettes, and Mustangs, and everything else under the sun. But one way or another, the F Body brings us together. I didn't start the club, I'm just a member (And the current president). It was founded in 1998 by someone who has long since disappeared. It was started by Jeep enthusiasts for Jeep enthusiasts, particularly those who actually want to wheel. We wheel with other Jeepers because that's what a majority of us know: Jeep stuff. Basic mechanical knowledge aside, familiarity with components make trail repairs and upgrades easier. I'm not going to pretend that there aren't guys in the club who think there is no other wheeling vehicle other than a Jeep, but there are plenty others who appreciate all kinds of off road vehicles (And even a handful of hot rodders). ALL members are focused on safe, LEGAL wheeling and are dedicated to land procurement and preservation. Oftentimes, we carry other people's discarded trash out of the woods with us. Point being, while we may be a Jeep only club, we most certainly do get out and wheel and have fun.

In addition to the Jeep and the half of a Trans Am in the driveway, there's also an '84 K5 Blazer that I can't decide what to do with. Naturally, the majority of the hardcore Jeep club guys want me to scrap it, but there's just something special about a full sized rig that makes me want to turn it into a bare-bones budget monster.

Hey, instead of complaining about a brand-exclusive club, why not start your own?

r0nin89

Hey, instead of complaining about a brand-exclusive club, why not start your own?

Lol cause I dont have some stupid idea in my head that chevys are somehow magically better at wheeling because of a motor and the tin around the truck.

The funny part about trucks especially is that everythings got New Process Tcases, Muncie or New Process transes, Dana axles, Saginaw Steering boxes, etc etc. Its one thing with racing to be so brand loyal because your goal is to go fast and a HUGE part of that goal is a motor thats brand specific.

Wheeling is a different thing in my eyes. Its not a grudge match like a race is, its an activity that a group of people are suppose to converge on and help each other to get everyone down the trail and thats the major difference here.

I really dont think I'm complaining about it. Just saying I think its retarded and people like that are idiots.

Like I said the major difference between being in a car club and a offroad club is that racing is a competitive sport, wheeling isnt when your talking about a casual situation. Wheeling isnt everyman for himself. Your suppose to help each other, get everyone down the trail and have fun together and thats what makes your little Jeep 4x4 club stupid regarding brand loyalty in comparison to say NJFBOA or honda owners or mustang group or whatever.

I would never be retarded enough to tell someone they couldnt come wheeling with us because he drives X vehicle.

You know, you had me until "what makes your little Jeep 4x4 club stupid." Our "stupid little Jeep club" has over 130 active members (Not including the forum guests). While we only wheel with each other during official club runs, that doesn't mean we won't stop to help someone who is stuck or broke regardless of what they're driving.

As I said, I admit freely that I know guys who will talk about the Jeep being the greatest off road vehicle bar none, but I know way more that are gearheads at heart and can appreciate anything that someone puts work into. I also know plenty of people who will talk about their Corvettes, or Hondas, or Dodge Chargers or whatever else as if it's the end all be all of automotive perfection. It's not unique to Jeeps.

Your attitude towards wheeling is spot on, but did someone with a Jeep do something horrible to you when you were a child or something?

LOL @ The last question.

No its just that when I started wheeling I was never against other brands. My friend was a dodge guy, he had a w150 pick up he built. My other friend was a Toyota guy, other friend was a Samurai guy etc etc. Everybody in town had something different and we all just went out and enjoyed it. There never really was any "Bah dodge piece of ****" or "Stupid ford garbage" other than the regular kidding if someone broke something or there was an inherent problem to a certain make that slowed us down.

I'd say what really got me bent about the jeeps rule kinda guys is that when I really really built built my second truck it was a k15 fullsize and the jeep guys love to break balls to no end about fullsize trucks not being able to go anywhere blah blah blah. Then a bunch of the same guys decided one day it would be a good idea to upgrade from those puny d30/d35 axles and get 3/4ton chevy or ford stuff and they took their "compact little trail machines" and made them just as damn wide as my fullsize but refused to admit it.

Its guys like that in combination with those guys that think jeeps are great and then drive down fire roads and say how hardcore the wheeling trip they were just on was

My girlfriends brother is a perfect example. Hes got Cherokee on 30x9.5 goodyear MTRs. Its a nice little rig no argument there. When I told him I was into wheeling he was like ah cool what do you have a wrangler? I was like ugh no I have an 87 K15 Chevy and he was immediately all like "O well where the hell are you gonna go in that big piece of ****" Then I brought my truck up by him and preceded to walk all over trails he couldnt even get in and go through all the tight spots he said I wouldnt fit and his attitude suddenly changed. Plus hes one of "those" guys that has Jeep lighters, duffel bags, socks, driving gloves, spatula, salad tongs, and toilet paper.

 Excellent! Maybe if he'd spent that money on swaybar discos instead of all that crap he could keep up with you a little better.

Can't argue with you there. One tons are definitely all the rage. Smaller, lighter vehicle + big, almost unbreakable axles = win. Of course, they work just as well in the vehicles they came from too. Seen quite a few guys go that route. I have to admit, there's a Dodge D60 in the parts pile in my garage waiting for the next project (It's not going in my TJ; no need for it in a dual purpose, street legal vehicle).

Got any pics of the K15? Might sway me towards building the K5!

Dude speaking of TJs theres a half cab conversion on the cover of one of my new magazine issues this months. It looks ****ing awesome. Have you seen that?

Heres a couple videos and overall shots of the truck. I never really got to wheel it when it was done done. The pictures are after those videos as far as a time table. Videos I had 56in springs out back and stock 47s infront with a corrected shackle angle (common factory issues with these and k5s). The droop shots with the highlift are with the 52in front spring swap. The travel was ridiculous and it had a ton more in it but needs longer shackles.

Put yota axles under your TJ. For anything smaller than 38s or 40s they cant be beaten with ground clearance and strength.

Thats whats going under my s10 when I build it.

shorten the tubes, my buddy ed has a half cab YJ with D60s under it that were shorten, right now hes taking his other 4cylinder YJ and using the half cab from the other truck to make a jeep pick-up deal(basically a brute but YJ version with a 350 and 4spd)
