so i was driving home and when i was 2 blocks from home a cop passes going the other direction and turns around so i already know were about to have chat. Before he even gets out of his car 2 other squad cars show up and a third later on. turns out i was doing 35 in a 30 and thats why he stopped me. I was polite as usual and didnt argue. He comes back a half hour later holding six tickets... Thats not a typo he gave me the following six tickets

1.No inspection
2.obstructed view
3.failure to make repairs
4.36 in a 30
5.unclear plates
6.Tinted hatch

Moral of the story. Stay the **** out of Metuchen.

Shouldn't the moral of the story be don't drive without inspection or don't speed? ;)

Sucks dude.

How did he write you for a tinted hatch...that's legal isn't it? What repairs needed to be made that weren't done?

How did you get a ticket for tinted hatch? Rear windows have no tint restrictions as long as you have both side mirrors.

1.No inspection <--you're beat
2.obstructed view <--??????
3.failure to make repairs <--you're beat, but isn't this the same as #1?
4.36 in a 30 <--really? come on, that is just nutty. plea it away
5.unclear plates <--why? you're probably beat.
6.Tinted hatch <-- WTF??

Us old guys always get told we suck and we don't know what we're talking about when we say tinting is a cop magnet. Damn kids never listen!

2. Had a whistle on a chain hanging from the rearview mirror
5. had one of those brackets around my plate. The thing a dealerships gives you but mine sais SHU on it

Yeah my rear hatch is tinted 5% and I have never been questioned about it. Went through inspection with it everything was fine. Also just look at 95% of SUVs and other newer cars have "Privacy Glass" as a factory standard/option. So yeah I would plea that as well as the 6 over the speed limit. As far as the other things your gonna be stuck with them. Obstruction of view no matter what it is/was will hold up and the inspection as well. The repair thing has me a little confused as to it being along the same lines as inspection.

Moral of the story. Stay the **** out of Metuchen.

**** the cop deal with the court.

Get inspection, most judges will throw it out.

Then ask how/why a failure to repair is justified if you didnt have a failure sticker from the DMV or a previous warning

Obstructed view your kinda beat, its $55 bucks... Could always plead that the cop unfairly threw the book at you even after being polite etc but that a stretch

Plead down the 36 in a 30. Make sure you tell the prosecutor your were following traffic and honestly didnt even realize it.

Unclear plates you should be able to have thrown out. Go get it inspected and then tell him the inspection station had no problem with the border so hows it and issue. And pretty much ditto on the tint.

I bet if you show up with proof of inspection and honestly plead your case to the prosecutor (if hes a normal person and not a power trip **** ass) he'll drop everything but the speeding and plead it down.

I agree with everyone here, like I texted you before. I still don't see how he can possibly give you a tinted hatch ticket. Hell, my Exploder has 20% tint on the two back doors, the side windows, and back window from the FACTORY, so I don't see how that's possible. Rack bodies don't even HAVE back windows.

You can read everything except the "garden state" part of the plate with those frames can't you? Mine corroded so I have a different one on but I'm trying to remember.

Precisely.

And I call BS on the "tinted hatch" thing. You either rolled up your windows for him and he gave you a ticket for tinted windows, or he saw that your windows were tinted and gave you a ticket for ... tinted windows. Does your ticket say "tinted hatch"? I doubt it.

It definitely sucks that the cop dropped the hammer so hard on you, but I think something else is going on here. Ordinarily, that large number of tickets equals the driver being a total D bag, but the large amount of police cars leads me to believe that a car similar to yours was seen leaving a street race, recently evaded the police, or may have been involved in a crime and they didn't have any way to prove it wasn't you; therefore, they wrote a bunch of tickets after a computer check of you didn't yield any useful information. Whatever it was, and whatever you do courtwise, I'd stay out of Metuchen.

I once got pulled over in Highland Park. Similar circumstances. Cop saw me, turned around followed me until he had a back up unit behind him, lit me up. Then I saw at least three more cars join them. Guy took one look at me (Without asking for ID), asked where I was coming from, where I was going, and where I was the night before. When I told him work, and who I worked for, he actually asked me if anyone else had been driving my Jeep at the time. If I wasn't on the job, I wouldn't have been surprised if I hadn't gotten tickets for my lack of inspection, mud flaps, or any other violation he could find.

DAm i just got 2 tickets on my ride to florida in virgina and i thought that was bad. i got stopped for speeding and he also gave me a ticket for my rear windows being tinted. buts its the stock privacy glass in virgina its 35% is legal and my stock back window tint is 20% so its a $96 ticket for something the car came with brand new out of the box

Ya man i lived around here for a long time so i know better than to speed in this town and im trying to figure out what caused him to drop the hammer. I was very polite as usual since i know your getting nowhere startin **** with the cop. I think it might be cause my one neighbor keeps calling the police to complain about my car, so maybe there being pressured to do something?

sucks man, i'm sure a few tickets will get dropped in court but it really depends on your record. if its real bad, that could be why you got slammed. it also could be tied into the recent !safety inspections.

the inspection ticket wont go away even if you get it inspected...ive tried it before... doesnt fly. the only one youll probably be able to talk down is the unclear plates.

i can't speak for the town in question but any municipal court i have been in, the prosecutor tells the offender to get the car inspected/registered/insured and they will drop that ticket.

I have to go into Metuchen all the time. I pretty much know where all the cops hide out but you still don't screw around. I'm gonna go take the license plate bracket off my DD later just so I don't get messed with when school starts.

thor117
07-25-2010, 12:42 PM
the plate bracket is really a gamble. you can take it off to avoid the ticket, or you can leave it on cause if the cops in a good mood and your respectful he can knock a ticket down to plate bracket. i personally leave mine on. it gives the officer the opportunity to not give you a more expensive ticket or one with points

BurninrubberGT

^well the problem with that is they will just pull you over for that..

thor117
07-25-2010, 04:48 PM
they don't really just write tickets for the plate bracket. and they don't pull you over for it unless they think they'll find something else wrong with it. but even then. there are always other things they can pull you over for. in my opinion taking it off won't stop much.

1.No inspection ( not hard to give someone some cash to pass you )
2.obstructed view ( common sense **** dont belong there )
3.failure to make repairs ( could have been fixed prior if you found someone to pass you
4.36 in a 30 ( technically speeding, maybe could have asked to see his wonderful radar )
5.unclear plates ( thats a cop being a jack )
6.Tinted hatch ( Bull he didnt verify your side windows so tell him to scratch )

i got pulled over years back for loud exhaust(no catback on the car-no cats either) and he let me go(dating a cops daughter at the time and had PBA card) but not after mentioning that my tinted rear hatch was illegal. I had rolled up my sides to show him they weren't tinted. As he was walking away, i leaned out the window and called him back to my car and asked " how long has the statue been around that you cant tint the rear window?" he told me it always has been on the books. I knew better, plus i had 2 beers earlier in the night, so i left it at that and wished him a good night. The next day i told my GF's dad that he said my tint was illegal. he replied with just almost exactly as " you should have said you'll "take the ticket and make him look like an 'A-hole' in court"....
I was positive about the rear window issue since in '97, i had a gold firebird decal i wanted to put on the rear hatch of my trans am but I was concerned about being legal to block any view so i went to the police station with the decal and asked them. They told me i can put whatever i want on the rear window, and i could even "paint it solid black" for all the law cared.
