Thanks. Steel wool, two types of wire wheels, a drill, and VHT header paint did a pretty good job.

Why do you say that? These are getting installed with the help of an experienced friend of mine and his full shop

hmm id like to see how the VHT paint holds up. we did rustoleums header paint on 19iroc88's car, it last idk maybe 5 mins before some spots started to burn off?? lol

Did you cure the paint before you put them on? This stuff can either be cured on or off the vehicle using heat cycles. A friend of mine used the same stuff on his turbo, followed the directions and its lasted 3 years with only a few spots just started to show up.

Hmm they sat for almost 24 hrs, dry to the touch. Planned on doing the heat cycle but fired it up for like 1min open headers and the paint on the primaries started to come off. theres a good amount of paint still on, just not like is supposed to be...

Ill keep an eye on it. The headers still had a good amount if the ceramic coating on them so hopefully that will help.

I had really poor experience with VHT paint... I sprayed everything and let it dry to the touch except when you put pressure on it the stuff would still rub off. So I thought eh its cause its not cured. Touched it up once it was installed. Heat cycled it as directed 3 times let it cool and checked to make sure it wouldnt rub off. Well it did...

If you want silver use cast blast if you want black use krylon BBQ paint.

Thanks for the heads up I'll keep an eye on it. The whole reason for the clean up and paint was to stop and slow down the rusting. I'm hoping to squeeze at least 18 months out of them. I'll be changing them out for stainless steel once I do heads/cam etc.

Good Luck with that. Never did any Header installs on any of the LT1 cars I owned and I wouldn't want to. Did 3 LS1's with no problems. How long on average will this take you?

It took me and my old roomate 4hrs to do the headers on my LS1. That was in the driveway with jack stands and no air tools. It seems from everyone that has done headers on a LT1 that its a real PITA. I never did headers on a LT1 but let us know Dave how long it takes. Depending on how big of a PITA it is will pretty much decide me doing headers on my Firehawk.

if you have done headers in general before, it makes life easier. its the newbs that don't know what to expect and are tackling it for the first time that make it seem like hell. tis fun!

I have a jack and stands but we cant work on cars in my Apartment. I can bring them anywere.

Green_Phoenix_LT1
09-06-2010, 09:26 PM
Yeah It hangs low but surprisingly I haven't bottomed going in or out of my driveway yet. For the amount of hours that was put into it and the time of night I wasn't worried about it being so low. I was happy it started haha. For those that know my driveway that's pretty impressive. Between the mounts, headers, and CAI there is a HUGE difference in the way the car performs. The Y pipe will get adjusted when I get the cutout put on. Oddly enough my fuel economy has improved.

Yeah Matt almost lost a hand from a sawzall and Adam almost lost his due to a prybar.

Even the motor mounts were a little less than forgiving it was a good time and I learned a lot about my car an LT1s in general. I think one of these days I need to go over every bolt to check for tightness everywhere in the car because 95% of the bolts were loose and came out frighteningly easy lol.

Next step is a Tune and new O2s.

Yeah I thought about that. But bascially everything they assembled was touched on sunday lol. I mean the other things that were done were either ripped or would of had major issues already. I am having a lot of fun driving it around though. My in laws are enjoying it a lot less however.

It wasn't too bad. The only part that was the most PITA was the motor mounts.

Granted everything was done on a lift and with guys that have done it numerous times.
