Has anyone had any success in converting VHS to DVD? What did you use?
I'm having difficulty with our combo VHS/DVD player, as I can either get it to record the video but not the audio, or it records both but takes 2 DVDs to convert 1 80 min VHS. I haven't tried it in a while, and just tried to hook it up, and I can't remember what I need to do, and can't find the manual (hard copy or online).
So, I was doing some searching online, and thought I might look into getting a video capture kit to attach to the computer and burn that way. I figure if the file is too big I could use DVD shrink to make it fit, and not affect the quality. I'm looking at different options and reading reviews, but not finding anything that a majority of people are happy with.
So far I looked at Roxio Easy VHS to DVD, VHS to DVD 4.0 Plus, or getting a cheap analog capture card and finding free or cheap software.
Any suggestions?

What id the Make/Model of your VHS/DVD combo recorder?
I may be able to find a PDF manual for you.
Roxio is a halfway decent program but I prefer Nero. Those are my 2 cents.

Sharp DV-RW550.
I can't find the model listed on Sharp's website. I searched google and had one result look promising, but it seemed like I needed to sign up for the website to download the pdf.
I have an old version of Nero (I believe Nero 6) but didn't think it captured video. I need something that will take the video in and convert it to digital. Then I can use any number of programs to burn (DVD Shrink if the file is too big, Nero, etc). I need to find the middle man, basically.

Not according to the model number on the front of the player. Just DV-RW550.

similar but not quite it. That's probably a newer version of the one I have. This one is about 5+ years old.

That looks to be the right model. There seems to be only the one
DVD/VCR combo the Sharp has with that model # DVR550U or
DV-RW550U as it is on the manual. Oddly the current Sharp
DV-RW550U is a Blu-ray Disk Player. I couldn't find the combo
DVD/VCR recorder on the Sharp site, except when you search the
"Accessories & Supplies", where it is listed as DVR550U under the
DV-RW550U listing. Oddly they also show the Remote as
compatibile for both a DV-RW550U and a DVRW550U. The
manual is listed as compatibile with a DVRW550U.
My email is DLMillerJR85@gmail.com.
Send me an email and I'll reply to it and attach the manual for you.

It's not quite the right model. You can see in the pictures it's similar but not the same. I think the U is probably for the new model or for Blue Ray, which I don't have. Thanks though.
I'm still looking for other solutions anyway. It might be quicker and easier to do through the computer. So if anyone has any suggestions on hardware/software to use through the computer, it would be appreciated as well. :)

Magix - Rescue Your Videotapes.
We've been using it for a LOT of VHS to DVD conversions (my girlfriend has been kind enough to do most of the work) as we were trying to clear space in our basement. It comes with a RCA-to-USB converter. Pretty simple to use, and allows for video editing and tracking adjustments.
