View Full Version : Dim tail lights
The car is a 1995 Pontiac Firebird. The dual filament brake/turn signal lights are very dim on my car. I'm reading between 2 and 6 volts for all four of them when it is just the turn signal on and no other lights. The far outside tail light is reading 12 volts. I checked the voltage at the connector before the wires route to the dual filament bulb sockets and the voltage was close to 12.
I am thinking the sockets are not healthy anymore. Is there anything else I should check?
Below is a diagram. I am talking about the #6 sockets/bulbs. All four of them are giving low readings.

sockets and grounds. common issue. i made a whole new harness myself for my 93 TA, worked great afterward.
Is there some way I can fix the socket myself? I'm guessing its the ground wire where it leaves the socket that goes bad.
EDIT: I mean without replacing it. I'd have to order the part unless I went to a dealer or felt like paying $25-45 for a $5 part.
they have the sockets at autozone, pepboys, advance etc

I have a whole harness of a 95 Trans Am(replaced it cause i needed a reverse socket and got a good deal on a whole harness. Every other light worked perfectly. Only socket missing is the driver side reverse socket. PM me if you interested.

Initially I checked on the Advance website and they wanted $50. I called up Autozone and they said its a dealer part. GM Parts Direct wants around $30. Then I realized I could go with a universal socket, ha.
Just spliced in two sockets to see if it would change things and BAM: light! I'll pick up two more sometime today or whenever to finish the job. Thanks for your help.

Thanks but since I already did two I will just finish and keep this harness.
