well i told my girlfriend about how i plan on dropping about 10k on my camaro to make it run 10's, she got mad apparently and gave me the option of her or my car that has been sitting on jackstands in my driveway for a year...needless to say i informed her she can leave lol i might be a little obsessed with my car but it stays no matter what girls come and go, and that is the 2nd girl i had to break up with because they were against me spending so much money on my car i need to stop finding duds!

I had the same problem. She told me i was spending more time and money on the car then her. Even after an expenses breakdown of the over 14k i spent in 6 years, she still wouldnt believe me. If dinner is expensive you probably shouldn't be spending 10k on your car and should rather rethink your finances.
jts98z28
10-13-2010, 10:16 AM
and dinner itself isnt expensive its the spending 60+ a week on it that adds up to more a month than a 10k loan would
Frosty
10-13-2010, 10:23 AM
Wait, you're gonna take out a $10K loan@19yrs old to build up your car? You might want to rethink that...but it's your $$.
There are woman out there that are OK with the car hobby, some even encourage it. A good friend of mine has a wife that is encouraging him to get his Camaro done....she's perfect

just went through the same thing recently, except mine was like "sell your camaro for an engagement ring". Now i have nothing against marriage, but to sell my car that was paid/built BEFORE she even came along was ridiculous. i was like F*** that. I explained that since she has never paid for a dinner, etc she had no room to complain, well we know how that ended haha!
I have dated many girls over the years, and if theyre not cool with the car now, they never will be, yea it may suck when it all goes down, but the next car part you buy or the next pass down the strip and youll go "what woman?"

Bottom line make it clear from the get go and it will never be an issue.
That is key. You can't expect to set the expectations 7 years down the road. And if you are serious about cars any wife-to-be needs to know and accept that. I can't tell you how many guys I know who had to give up the car or just watch it sit in the garage because they never came to an understanding. So no weekend trips, or even whole day trips. Hell, just trying to get out for a few hours is a hassle and after a while guys give up because it ain't worth it.
I will say this - it is a 2 way street. I can't expect to go to Carlisle for 4 days and not expect my wife to go away with her friends for a few days. That is where a lot of guys go wrong, they are over bearing, un-trusting husbands. It's a give & take deal. And family first. I've missed a lot of cruises and such for baseball and other things. And I don't care. I have fun and I'll still get to go to pigeon forge next year, and power tour one of these days, and back to sema, and Carlisle, etc. My wife knows I need my car to be happy, and she knows I won't put it in front of what is really important.

10k to run 10s?? You can do that cam only (with nitrous or weight reduction) or easily with heads/cam
Yeahhhh....um why did she need to know? Honestly if I havnt been going out with a girl that long and its inst serious what I spend my money on is none of her buisness. 10K why dont you just sell yours and take all the money and buy a car thats done?

well i am too attached to my car and i like to learn how to work on cars myself because i usually fix my friends cars, and 10k because i plan on going faster than 10's eventually so i am trying to do fully adjustable suspension, lightweight parts, and i gotta do rod bolts because i heard 98's had weak rod bolts, and i might as well do heads and cam while the motor is out, and i want a sunoco hood and paint which is included in the 10k

You guys are funny. Coming from a female perspective...if you want to keep a girl, don't tell her how much total. Ignorance is bliss. But you can't get away with that if she's a gear head herself. Which in that case, there would probably be a mutual understanding. It's a jealously thing. You're spending more time and far more money on a car than her. The girl wants to be number one. And should be if you actually care about her. I kinda went through the same thing when my bf started on his Camaro. He blew the engine up 3 years ago and has been sitting ever since. I finally managed to convince him just to finance the money that he didn't have saved yet. But I wasn't too thrilled over him talking about parts and spending thousands on parts and spending so much time looking for parts constantly...but since I did the same thing a few months ago...it was more understandable. It's so much easier to have someone who understands and shares the same interest. I would be perfectly fine wanting to dump $10K into a car...considering I almost have that invested into mine now. :)
