a 20-year-old computer salesman and community college student, took his car in for an oil change earlier this month and his mechanic spotted an odd wire hanging from the undercarriage.
The wire was attached to a strange magnetic device that puzzled Afifi and the mechanic. They freed it from the car and posted images of it online, asking for help in identifying it.
Two days later, FBI agents arrived at Afifi's Santa Clara apartment and demanded the return of their property — a global positioning system tracking device now at the center of a raging legal debate over privacy rights.

Some of us gave up our fall break to do projects and business plans and haven't had much contact with the outside world lately.

oh no ....:fluffy:
Put on your tin foil hat!
I just don't understand. People are so worried about "having the government spy on them", but PURPOSELY use foursquare on facebook to inform millions of people that they "checked in" here and there.

Completely different. You're volunteering that information(however stupid that is), an agency of a the government is putting a tracking device onto personal property without a warrant. Completely different.

I also find it ironic that our lovely administration sues AZ for doing the right thing with the immigration laws due to possibly profiling people yet someone of middle eastern descent is profiled and it seems OK...interesting.
eh im not too surprised. it was bound to happen eventually. Just think how many others are being tracked by OEM gps systems. its something we'll have to accept as technology advances.
personally, with my occupation, i watch what i say on my private cell phone, because i know...

Yeah that's so annoying, I always watch what i say on the internet or on phone. Not that I have something bad to say or do but still. They creep around on everything and everything. I wouldn't be shocked if they use our built in webcams and mics on our computer and listen and watch us.

i'll do you one better, i couldn't see a gps tracking device on ma car, but they probably knew i was gonna search for one at some point, so i was thinking... if i were an FBI agency and wanted to violate people's privacy, how would i do it without being caught?
then it hit me: privacy, like privacy windows. Privacy windows are on most cars, if not all cars. Usually the only privacy windows are the rear windows. Rear windows, rear window defroster!
GASP O.o MY REAR WINDOW DEFROSTER IS ALSO THE FBI'S GPS TRACKER!!!
so i did what any normal man would do: tinfoiled my entire car. even the windshield. :D
(just a heads up... this was a reference from the South Park Anal Probe episodes.)
