My gf got her car inspected today, and oddly the guy inspecting her car said this will be the last time she has to get her car inspected since this will be the last year for inspection. Don't know if the guy was just messing around or if NJ is finally doing away with it.

It would be amazing for you guys if it was like south carolina, no inspection, no ones going to bother you for no emissions equipment, cats or mufflers missing.

I highly doubt that they will ditch inspections all together. Maybe he's just an idiot....

ditch the sniffer but there NEEDS to be safety inspections. loud cars never killed anyone, unsafe cars do

While I agree with that line of thought, apparently NJ's budget thinks the opposite.

The money NJ gets from the government for having clean cars is more important than our safety.

They saved approximately $12 million / year by getting rid of safety inspections.

I was told they were getting rid of emmision inspection but keeping the Saftey inspection part of it. who knows!
they have definitly got rid of the dyno part of it in the shops.

As of August 1st they stopped all safety inspections, and they are only doing emissions inspections / tilt tests for lifted vehicles now.

while I agree, from what I read statistics bear out that there is little difference in accident occurrence here compared to states with no safety inspections.

Yes, no more safety inspections. But from what I remember reading in the news was that all cars 5 years or older have to go for emissions every 2 years.

Yea, I worded that wrong. I meant they are still doing emissions inspections (for everyone, with the same rules as before), and tilt tests for lifted vehicles.

It seems backwards to me as well. Safety inspection should consist of at least a brake test along with a visual check. If your car is held together with drywall screws it shouldn't be on the road.
As time goes on, the majority of cars on the road will have OBD2, so a simple glance to see if the check engine light on is all it would need. Even most of the older cars with OBD1 should pass with the check engine light off, and there is a catalytic converter. In the grand scheme of things, I think these older cars really don't pollute that much, when you look at industrial cities around the world.

I know NJ no longer requires motorcycles to be inspected. I got a letter from the state along with my registration that said they would no longer require them as of August 2010.

Any car 2006 or newer they give you a 1 year extension sticker. I got it last week in the mail for the goat.

By your theory my Camaro and 'vette would have been perfectly eco-friendly. No cats, no EGR, no rear O2's, no AIR pump(provided the car came with it) and no check engine light, thus passing. ;)

Yea, pretty BS if you ask me, dunno how or why the idiots deciding these things figure that new cars won't be modded or have emissions equipment deleted. Half the threads on any Fbod board are "how do I delete EGR/AIR/cats and pass".. you would think they would catch on.
And yes, I am an angry OBD1 owner who does not get such luxury. Fuggin sniff tests. :-?

maybe he ment that the state will no longer be inspecting cars and we will have to go to private inspection done by your local mechanic?

I think this is what was meant. When I got my license recently the lady behind the counter mentioned that the DMV is trying to get rid of the INSPECTORS because they do not want to pay benefits and whatnot. and as of now you can LITERALLY go through inspection with no windsheild and they will pass you as long as the emmissions were OK.
They have only gotten rid of the safety checks as a way to save money.

I think we should make a ringer car. One that would fail like crazy elsewhere. No glass except the windshield (sticker has to go somewhere). No doors, milk crate seat, 4 bald tires, etc. Trailer it down the road from a station and then drive 'er in.

I am tempted to ask Mike to trailer the Solstice with the flat (completely dead tire) to the station and we will drive it through with the flat  I could take the seats out too
