My kitchen fridge seems to have bitten the dust. We were planning on remodeling the kitchen in the spring and buying a new one then. If I can repair this one for the time being it would be great.

During lunch yesterday I noticed an unusually loud buzzing coming from the fridge whenever it tried to kick on. Thought it was the ice maker at first. Well last night I realized the freezer and fridge weren't as cold as usual. Sure enough the compressor must not be kicking on.

Any way to test if the compressor died or if it may be some sort of switch problem? I don't know anything about how they work but with some decent info I can diagnose it I'm sure.

Is there ice on the back inside wall of the freezer? Do you hear the fan spinning in the freezer?

Ice build up can actually isolate the freezer compartment and cause higher temps believe it or not. It used to happen to our icecream freezer where I worked in high school.

Just a thought but it doesnt sound like your issue. Sounds like you may possibly need a thermistor switch or what ever the hell they call it on a refrigerator.

Yeah no ice on the back wall. What's the thermistor switch do...cycle the compressor on and off at given temps? The loud buzz I hear I'm assuming is whatever would normally kick on the compressor. Tonight I'll pull the fridge out and see if the compressor spins or is seized as a start I guess.

Paul, do some googling, I've been amazed at the repair info I have found online for appliances. My wife is still mad I fixed the dryer with a $2 part instead of buying a new one. :)

Use this site. I have used 'em plenty of times in the past with great results each time.
