No no, this is hockey, it's a continuous-play type of sport where you keep moving, not a slow play-by-play game like baseball, or hand egg.

If the Flyers keep going on this streak and win the Presidents Trophy they are doomed. Only 7 teams that have won the Presidents Trophy ended up winning the Stanley Cup.

Dubinksy getting hurt screwed up my fantasy team...why'd he have to go and fracture his leg.
Let Vancouver have the Presidents Trophy, I would want that curse if I was a team lol.
The Flyers look good, their scoring depth is just sick. D is solid, goaltending as usual will be the only question mark. They've given up a few leads in the last few games which can't happen come playoff time. It should be an interesting run. Pens/Flyers in the Conf Finals for the East.

Don't forget they don't have ridiculous ghetto celebrations after each score too. No pointing up to God like he somehow had something to do with scoring.
That'd be cool though right? Every time Crosby scores he should do some type of drunken shuffle while falling back past the red line while thanking God...it would keep things fresh and interesting.

1. Crosby is a bitch. Don't care how good he is, he's as bad as soccor players when they get tapped, they go right down and act as though their career is over from that contact.
2. Fighting is encouraged in hockey, and of all the sports I ever played, ice hockey took the most training for since you're off the ice for just a couple minutes, then back on and have to skate up and down the ice.
3. I thought stupid touch down celebrations were a penalty, yet today I see people three moves away from the doing the super bowl shuffle.

Crosby is a bitch but arguably top 3 players in the league...can't deny that.
I'm curious to see what the NHL does with hits to the head. They're toying with the idea of a no tolerance policy like the NFL....I'm sure it's a big coincidence they're talking about this right after Crosby got nailed. I hope they leave things as is, maybe stiffen the punishment a little more but that's it.

NHL has to consider that 90% of hits to the head were accidental. This sport is too fast to control accidents like this. Almost every game a high sticking penalty is called when all a player tries to do is lift the opposing players stick and accidently hits them in the face. They slap you with an extra 2min if you draw blood like thats intentional and the extra 2 is actualy stopping players from lifting an opposing players stick. Heres another one, you trip a guy and you get 2 for tripping and they get 2 for diving. Well, is it a trip or a dive? There can only be one. And crosby is a crying little bitch. He forgets hes on camara dishing out cheap shots but doesnt STFU when he gets hit cleanly. Bettmans little poster boy could tary and be a little tougher.
Frosty
01-21-2011, 12:06 PM
I agree with the 90% comment. It's not like football, most hockey hits to the head are accidental.
I get the trip/dive concept. The initial action was the trip and the other player embellished it....I still would like to see more dive only calls made.

All I have to say is, ask a player from the Super series of 1976 what team they fear, and long for revenge the most, he will utter the words Philadelphia Flyers.
Our team is the ONLY team to strike fear across the world, and we still do today. Meanwhile the Kansas City Scouts (New Jersey Devils) were having a suckfest on ice for a few years, and many years to come, even after moving to Colorado.
The Devils wish they hand a handful of the history, and accomplishments we have made, and would do anything to have devoted fans like us.
People complain Philadelphia fans are crazy, rude, and ignorant, we say you aren't serious enough of a fan for your team.

I went to a rangers flyers game in philly on 2/9/08 and did not wear my rangers jersey. Turns out the rangers won 2-0 and I regretted not wearing it. Last year when the schedule was announced I saw that the last regular season game was in philly, so in September I bought tickets to that game because I figured it may be an interesting game, that prediction was an understatement. So like an idiot I wore my rangers jersey to that game. My car could have been parked in Deleware thats how long of a walk it was thru the parking lot. Being a Rangers and Vikings fan I have learned to be used to the abuse though.

Because most people can't follow the game. If it's too complicated or not easily followed people don't watch it. Anyone can follow baseball, while it may be boring to someone ANYONE can just jump in and watch it. Same with football. Non-fans can still sit and watch the game and keep up. If you're not a fan of hockey it's hard to follow. Non-fans also don't appreciate the skill and talent it takes(which is more compared to the other sports listed). It's kind of like golf. If you don't play, if you don't understand it you can't watch it or appreciate it. I can't play that damn sport, I don't know how Jeff doesn't it every week. Then again with my retarded body I can't play much of anything nowadays. /facepalm

I played hockey for like 10 years, till all my gear got stolen and i pretty much tore my knee in half, i kinda just lost the motivation. You also start to realize after a while that you just dont "have it" and your not goin anywhere... but i guess thats why i am and can be a hockey fan lol. Its just the ultimate sport to me... combines mental toughness, physical toughness, long history, non stop action and long term strategy, and fierce player v player and team vs team rivalries. Way more exciting than any of the other sports to me!!

^^^^ Same here. It takes about 15 minutes for my tendenitis to flare up in my left arm, which should be about 5 minutes before my back aches so bad I have to lay flat for a while to just get back up lol. I haven't been on NJFBOA in a while, but coming back I can't help but see this thread and feel the need to defend.
I believe the Devils can make it into the playoffs this year. Despite the problems experienced, and the trades completed, I believe Lemare can treat these players like the overpaid 6 year olds that they are. For any of you who are parents, you know that kids need constant supervision - and if you don't get stern with them, and make sure they are doing what they are supposed to, they won't. The moment you leave the room, they go back to goofing off.
The coaching change prooves the players need to be treated like kids.
Another benefit was returning players to the lineup who were injured. Rolston and Greene are huge on this team. Once they got healthy, and Lemare came back, the team began winning. They are far from the team they used to be however.
Sometimes a violent shakeup is needed. Langenbruner got his come-to-Jesus moment and he was traded. Kovalchuck got his pounding in the media for his lack of performance after the media circus that was his contract signing over the summer. All kinds of things were very uncharacteristic for this winning team.
Now... they are climbing over the bodies to get to within sight of the playoffs. Some of those bodies are their own players and coaches.
This is not a "rebuilding" year, nor are they "playing for pride" at this point. The Devils know they got caught being lazy and need to redouble their efforts.
Now they are winning.

Both teams played well but the devils played better out shooting ny. Watching 45min of trap still kills me. I cant enjoy watching a professional team utalize a system that mocks the game I love. I think its ironic that the flying frenchman who played on one of the most prolific scoring lines ever has to revert to the trap to win games. What ever works for ya I suppose, its still stupid to watch. Nj is putting together a hell of a push to make it in the show but with carolina and buffalo playing well Im afraid its too little too late.

Here's where I dare to hope. Not hope for the playoffs - I truly believe they will slip in.
I dare to hope they make it to the show. Why? Because of history.
The last few years they did very well in the regular season, then hit the end of the year, have a huge skid of a few losses straight, and enter the playoffs and fall flat.
This year I feel like its an avalanche thats slow to start but will rumble at full speed right before the end. All they needed was a small explosion to get the avalanche moving.
I'm no longer worried about the playoffs - I now look at the Cup and begin to believe.... 8-)

NJ has a pretty easy schedule this month, not too many playoff bound teams, they may get close but you cant rely on teams ahead of you to lose.

if you check out the new article on NHL.com about them, the devils are playing some pretty weak teams in the next few weeks...pretty much the bottom half of the east. should be a huge help if they can continue this roll
Frosty
03-05-2011, 06:18 PM
Absolutely, they're playing some weak teams but that still doesn't negate the fact they need help from other teams. If they take 15 out of the next 18 games(that's what they have left right?) and the Cane's, Rangers and Sabres win 12 out of 18 then they're still out.
They're on a roll, they're playing some sick hockey but they better pray the teams in front of them lose.
Then again playing weak teams doesn't mean much, the Flyers have lost 3 in a row, all to teams out of the playoffs right now.

Devils are playing great but it's hard to imagine they can keep it up. Flyers are playing like poop and they're sitting back waiting for the puck to come to them or for a player to get open. You can't play hockey sitting still so they better figure it out in the next 10 games. I'm not worried about the #1 spot, but if Pitt jumps ahead of them they get dropped down to #4 at the next best.

I have to say that I absolutely hate the shootout BS giving one team the extra point. A shootout has nothing to do with one team being better than and beating another team. If neither team can win outright in regulation or overtime, then each should get 1 point, that's it. There is no shootout in the playoffs so I don't understand why it's used in the regular season. I bet if they extended overtime to 10 minutes, 75% of the ties would find a true winner. I don't recall seeing so many overtime ties and shootouts, especially at the end of the season like this. It's not even fun to watch these games all played to a tie anymore.
Knipps
03-26-2011, 10:10 AM
It was developed to decide a winner. Someone wins, someone loses. There's no shootout in the playoffs because it's ok for those games to go until 1am. It's a special occasion. If it was 10/80 games (per team) in the regular season it would be a little ridiculous.
Frosty
03-26-2011, 11:11 AM
I've hated the shootout since Day 1 regardless of how badthe Flyers are in it, lol. It's exciting but the impact on the standings sucks. Your team can blow but hang on past OT and have an advantage in an INDIVIDUAL scenario.
For instance, the Red Wings came back from 4-0 against the Pens the other night, fought back as a team, tied the game as a team and lost in the shootout as an individual....I hate it.

Nobody deserves the win if you can't score in OT. Obviously they can't keep playing 20 minute OT periods until someone scores either. This year seems loaded with shootouts, it's like teams are playing differently. I think the last 4 Flyers games have gone to shootout and the last 3 Penguins games as well. If you really think one team should deserve the extra point for a win, make them score to prove they deserve it. Ties were always a normal part of hockey and if one team scored in OT they got the extra point. I think the 4 on 4 in OT was a great change, but the shootout is worthless.

Jeff, the optimistic side of me is hoping they're just coasting to the playoffs. Remember last March? They had a terrible month. I would hope that they have that extra gear for the playoffs...but on the flip side of that I would hope an NHL team wouldn't just coast through games. Time will tell but I don't have a good feeling. Richards is my boy but he's just been awful the last 2 months. Hartnell is worthless. It's REALLY pathetic when Zherdev is hustling the most out there.
