How would one go about beginning to try to locate a specific car from the past?

Its a 1963 or 1964 2dr Plymouth Sports Fury

Car was bought brand new in the Fort Lee NJ area and sold prior to 1975.

I know it ALL depends on getting the VIN and I should have no problem doing that. My mom always kept records of everything once her and my father met and I'm pretty sure there is even the original sales paperwork laying around my house somewhere.

I am expecting that the car has long ago been wrecked crushed or just destroyed in general. But part of me still wants to try to find it.

In theory, how would I even begin?

Edit:

I just spoke to my mother.. she said the car wasn't in the greatest shape when sold and she kinda remembers that the one door was almost falling off. And she said she thinks it probably ended up in a junkyard not long after being sold.
But she will look for paperwork to get the VIN but she said the car was sold to a cop in Palisades Park, NJ.

The only way to look that up is if a police officer does it for you. And to the best of my knowledge they need a reason to do it- they can't just run a VIN and give the info away.

Are there any companies that perhaps specialize in VIN searches?

The police angle is most likely possible for me otherwise.

you could start with a car fax, they will tell you owner changes(no details tho), accidents, inspection records, and if the car was ever junked or not.

car fax only works with the current VIN style IIRC, i know my dads 67 firebird has a much shorter VIN

police route works... however u cant really use that info if u can get ur hands on it when contacting the current owner lol

carfax wont work with anythign older than 1980 iirc.

and yes with the police thing though i could at least know if the car fell off the face of the earth.
if it came back with any useful info, id take other more involved steps to trace/track the car by other means.

but unfortunately, i feel the car is long gone
