If you are a member of Sony's Playstation Network, chances are pretty good that some hacker now has the following info about you (and 70 million other people as well):
name
address
country
e-mail address
birthdate
PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login
handle/PSN online ID
Sony says there is a chance that the hacker(s) got purchase history, billing addresses, and possibly credit card data as well.

Yea, if any of you guys use the same login / password info on PSN as you do other place, go change them everywhere else NOW. Also, be on the looking out for scam emails, as the hacker(s) who stole the data are likely selling it.

Just because this happened to Sony doesn't mean it can't happen to XBOX...just shows you that nothing in this day and age is safe. We are all taking a chance whenever we create an account somewhere. And with all the hackers out there that hate Microsoft, I'm surprised they haven't hacked XBOX Live yet. The good news is that Sony doesn't ask for your SSN. I just hope that's something these hackers can't obtain on their own with the info they already stole.
Maybe you'll care when someone duplicates your identity and goes on a little shopping spree which you will be responsible for clearing up? Maybe you won't, who knows.

Hey PSN is free right!! Wonder how good the secuirity measures are on a Free network Vrs XBL?? I Gladly pay my 50.00 a year so I have peace of mind that my **** is safer then on a Free network were sony waits a week to let everyone know that the 70 million accounts on PSN were copied by hackers and more then likely sold to the highest bidderss on the market.. Like I said been on XBL for over 6yrs and never had an issue like this.. Was on PSN for 3 yrs and have had a leap year bug down my PSN and now my **** was more then likely hacked and my credit card info and my DOB, Address are out in someones hands other then my own.. Hopefully by deleting my account last month it took all my info off the network before this happened..

i dont have my credit/debit card info on there. nothing was ever worth buying and if i did want something i would prob just buy a psn gift card and use it that way. i doubt they will go on a shopping spree with some made up last name and an address that isnt correct. the only thing valid on my account is my first name and email address.

You actually think XBL isn't hackable? Please....if someone wanted to they could/would. PSN got hacked for certain reasons...it's still Sony's fault for not taking the proper security steps but they were a target for a reason.

Sony was the target because they went after someone who was able to jailbreak a PS3 to run Linux. So Anonymous(a big hacker group) decide since they didn't think Sony was in the right it was up to them to teach Sony a lesson. This isn't the first time they've hacked but this is by far the worst.
BTW, for all of you Xbox fanboi's, MS just issued a bulletin about phishing and hacking scams through Black OPS.

Sony, whose computers were hacked April 17, on Thursday said it had encrypted the credit-card data of its PlayStation Network and Qriocity customers, but not their personal and contact information.
The company maintained in an updated Q&A (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/04/27/qa-1-for-playstation-network-and-qriocity-services/) that it had no evidence of credit-card information having been stolen, but that it could "not rule out the possibility."

Considering they stored the contact information in plaintext, I'd imagine that they didn't have any sort of super duper fancy encryption on the credit card information. I mean, they already had their rsa encryption cracked using basic math and statistical probability.

Sony has revealed that 10 million credit card accounts may have been exposed two weeks ago when a hacker broke into the company's computers in San Diego and stole data from 77 million PlayStation Network accounts.
During a news conference in Tokyo on Saturday, Kaz Hirai, Sony's executive deputy president, offered the company's first public apology by an executive and promised to compensate customers. "We offer our sincerest apologies," Hirai said, then bowed deeply in a Japanese custom showing regret, at the news conference, a recording of which can be viewed here (http://www.irwebcasting.com/110501/02/3a33cc2c90/index.html).
Hirai said Sony would give affected customers 30 days of free access to its Qriocity music-streaming service as well as 30 days of access to its PlayStation Plus online game service. In addition, Sony said it will provide credit card protection services for the 10 million customers whose data were compromised.
Sony last week said it had encrypted credit card data, but not other account information, including names, addresses, email addresses and birth dates.

More hacking discovered:
Sony said Monday that it had discovered that more credit card information and customer profiles had been compromised during an attack on its servers last week. In a news release issued by Sony, the company said that it had discovered hackers had gained access to the Sony Online Entertainment servers, which contain approximately 24.6 million customer accounts and 12,700 credit card and debit card numbers. Sony said the hackers might have stolen this information, but the company could not be sure. Sony Online Entertainment is a division of Sony that creates multiplayer online games for the PS3 and PlayStation Portable gaming platforms. The announcement of more compromised customer information was another black eye for Sony, which is facing international pressure to answer questions about the attacks on its servers, and to disclose exactly how many customers were affected by the breach.

There's no definitive answer about the credit card stuff but it sounds like it was safe. It was encrypted(though it was probably a half-assed encryption). The network being up or not isn't going to have any bearing on if someone has your credit card info. If they have it then they have it. All signs are pointing to just name/user name password/birthday.
If you google it there are quite a few articles on it that are saying the same thing.

In another year this will be a distant memory like that time XBox live went down for two weeks a few years ago, I have a personal beef with XBox live and while PSN has screwed me here at least it was kind of an accident, while Xbox just kept charging me for 3 years even when I called them every year to tell them I was overseas and would tell me they could not give me my money back but would make sure to cancel me for the next year.

Except if someone tries to use your personal infor to open a credit card account or get a passport to get into the USA then it wont be a distant memory for you. Thats what I am worried about. I remember my antiterroism training in the Military and how they get peoples info to use for falser DL's, Passports and what not. They dont need alot of info to get a fake identity.. Like I said before thats what scares me.. I trusted Sony with my personal information and they screwed me.. Thats the beef I have. Its not about what system is better or what online gaming is better to me its about trust and Sony has lost mine.
You might see this as overreacting but thats just me. Nothing might come out of this but there is still a chance that my info has been sold to someone and who knows what will happen or what they will use it for..

Went to Gamestop today and they told me that there has been a huge increase of people trading in there PS3's for Xbox 360's.. They also told me that PSN was using outdated security software which had no firewalls and that the Hackers are starting to put peoples personal info up on internet websites and they threaten to take down the PSN again once it gets back up!! Saw on CNN today as well that this will cost Sony as much as 1.25 billion to fix. They also said Sony is offering Identity theft protection at no cost to PSN users. My wife and I might get into that well thats if Sony is using an already established IDentity theft agency. If Sony just started one up with there software and service no thanks...

No it's not...and some of the game makers are getting pissed off too. The thing that bugs me is that most of the idiot gamers out there are whining that they can't play their games online, boo-hoo, go outside and ride a bike then. They're not upset that their info is out all over the place now. It's kind of scary that relatively few people care about the actual act and it's security issues, they care more about being able to fire up their online game. Idiots.

The 3rd party Sony is using is Debix. From what I've read they are pretty reputable. Sony is supposed to be sending out an email communication soon to all its PSN users with an activation code that will allow you to sign up with Debix's ID protection service for 12 months for free.
As for people being more concerned about playing games rather than their identity, it's pretty sad. I've already canceled the credit card account number I had associated with PSN and had them issue me a new number. I suggest others do it as well. It doesn't hurt your credit report/score if it is canceled for security reasons.
