I've been running Microsoft Security Essentials and have been happy with it. My computer use is extensive, but not vast, so you may want something more aggressive. Anyways, give it a look.

I had issues with AVG. My computer kept locking up when I had it installed, never had an issued with it on any other PC.

What Internet provider do you have? Comcast offers a free Norton subscription, that's what I'm using now and I don't even notice it running.

MS Security Essentials at home and at work. It's free plus it's better than most paid for programs. Probably the lowest resource user also. It's only using about 80mb on my computer. I also use the free version of ZoneAlarm firewall. The new Norton is pretty good. McAfee is a huge hog and runs a dozen processes. AVG was pretty good back in 2009, but that's grown to be a pig. The free version of Avast is pretty good. NOD32 I've seen stop legit programs from installing and running.

I have had very good success with AVG's stuff. Symantec and McAfee (yes they cost money) are trash. Even the corporate versions.
