View Full Version : Should i get the Droid 2 or wait for the Droid 3?

So today my blackberry went crazy and now is out of commision. I reconnected my enV touch which works perfectly fine. it just feels weird not having maps along with a few other features.

i've settled on getting a droid (unless the iPhone 5 comes out with a physical keyboard). numerous sources/rumors say that the droid 3 is to come out late summer/fall. Should i just hop on a droid 2 or should i wait for the droid 3? the wait may be hard i'm itching for something lol

Droid 2 is a good phone, the 3 looks like it will be sweet though. Dual core 1GB cpu, likely upgrade from a 3.7" to a 4" screen @ 960x540 resolution. The keyboard still slides out, and is slightly rearranged too.

that i saw, it looks like it will have 5 rows, the top being dedicated to numbers.

just the touch screen maps and the faster browsing will be enough to off shoot the slow browsing on my blackberry, and the random resets on my enV touch ^.^

My brother's Charge is pretty cool. I was showing him how to get around it...its a little over his head.

Are you sure she didn't mean the Charge? The Verizon people near me don't even try to sell the 'bolt to anyone anymore.

This was a big reason why.

I think I'm gonna pull the trigger on the HTC Incredible 2 - it's fast, great camera and screen, and is even global so when I go to Italy I can use the same phone. I'll just have to call Verizon and tell them to activate the SIM card so I can use it there. The only downside to the Incredible 2 is that it's not 4G.

what do you guys think about touchscreen keyboards? i'm deathly afraid of them, thinking that i'll misspell a lot. I am now however open to opinions, the iPhone and Droid X2 (which comes out tomorrow) might be fair game

Haven't spent any time with the Charge but people are getting good battery life out of it from what I read. The tbolt can be a battery hog at times if you are in 4G but its likely the charge lasts longer.

I normally just have to charge it once a day overnight and rarely have fallen into a situation where the phone would leave me stranded. Last night, battery was getting pretty low (10% charge). I just switched the network off so it would operate like a basic phone with voice/text.

I'm not a huge fan of Samsung phones and not sure how well updates and such will be supported. HTC has a good track record of keeping their products updated and open for people who like to root and do other things.

All things considered, either phone is likely a solid choice if you want to run on the 4G network (which is the real deal btw). HTC just has a better track record so this is what I went with. Supposedly a better battery will be coming out which is the same size as the stocker to quiet those that are having battery complaints.

I went from a Droid 1 to the Tbolt and had the same reservations. Honestly, I do miss the real keyboard but with the big screen and accurate controls, it's been pretty good. Once you get a lot of your shorthand and other words added to the suggestion text, it gets better. The rest of the pros of the phone/network outweighed my decision to stick with a phone having a physical keyboard.

Frosty

That's my dilemma too, the keyboard. I had a Droid 1 and loved the slide out keyboard. I'm getting my own account now that I'm single so I might be going with Sprint, the EVO 4G is a sick phone but no keyboard...I'm not sure if I'm going to like touch screen typing.

yeah till today the biggest factors in the phone i would be getting would be:

Needs a physical keyboard*
Maps (which basically all would have and/or could get)
the Compass app is pretty cool
the OBII app
Music capabilities**
swift movement/loading/navigation

*might be willing to give that up
** not a deciding factor, but i dont have an ipod/mp3 player

which brings me to another question.

What are the music capabilities on your guys' phones?
how many songs can it hold?
can it/do you use a removable memory such as an SD card?
what is the interface like?

I'm not sure if I'm going to like touch screen typing.

i'm the same way, i've always been very good at adapting to things but i felt like that would be too much. i flipped out when they took away the keyboards at work and gave touch screen monitors.

Additionally - what else can you guys say about battery life? idle, heavy usage all day texting/apps/surfing.

and are phones still capable of overcharging?

Believe the Tbolt holds 32GB of data so plenty of room for music (bigger than most ipods/itouch devices). Each phone manufacturer will have a slightly different way of handling music playing, editing, etc. The Tbolt uses an interface similar to an Ipod in some ways (multiple sorting, playlists, other functions). With the phone locked, I can change the volume, pause/play, and select tracks forward and back.

You do not need to remove the SD card to shift music back and forth from the phone as well just like an ipod or other MP3 player. You simply turn it into a USB drive and drag/drop.

Regarding usage, anything using the internet and the network heavily will drain the battery the fastest. Playing games can do the same. Music isn't bad unless you are streaming it over the network. With these large screens, they are usually the battery hog. Normal phone talk and text usage are easy on the battery.

I'm pretty sure Verizon charges $30/month for unlimited data, plus whatever minutes/texting plan you have.

I will never, ever, ever buy a phone with a slide out keyboard. Ever.

Downloading music, there are tons of free apps hat you can use to dl free music.

I kind of hope that by the time Im due for a new phone, that Moto will have a true next-gen phone, and that 4G will be all over the place.

GTFO WITH THAT TALK!

Why? Buttons are for old people, and people that cannot adapt due to mental issues, or girls due to nails.
If you have a phone with buttons, tie it to some fishing line and use it as a weight.
I have big hands, and big fingers. I can see small phones like iPhone and older Droids, but on the new generation 4.3/4.5 inch phones, my hands fit fine, and because my phone is a smart phone, it can change and pick up misspellings and mistakes for me. when you type, word suggestions fly across the top of the keyboard.

My gf was scared about typing on a touch screen, but within 24hrs, she was fine and had no complaints.

Buying a phone with buttons is like owning an LT1. Yeah, they can be fast, but why do you want something that is old and busted?

Good choice. Since this sounds like your first Android phone, be aware there is a little bit of a learning curve. It's certainly not difficult to use out of the box but you will be amazed how you can set everything up and what tricks you will learn to make things super fast and convenient. The ability to customize just about anything is very useful.

You do realize that over the last year, android powered phones outsold iOS and BB? Droid does, iOS doesn't. BB isn't even trying.

Brian phone does not have buttons, so therefor he is winning. His car has a 2nd ac compressor which makes it go woo-woo which overrides LT1 lameness. Add cherries, and its like a supercharged sunday.

Apple fanboy is meh.....never responded to my previous questioning of his undieing loyalty:
Get a Iphone. Better in the long run. Androids keep changing and chances are your driod will be outdate in a year. Costumer Service for those phones suck too. I have friends that have Droids and are like F&*&, "man they came out with another android and I can't get a replacement for this one". Hear that alot. With the Iphone you Have Apple to provide service and they rock. Apple Makes awesome stuff dude.
Iphone is fine for someone who wants their phone experience controlled completely by steve jobs, and it's not a bad phone overall. For those who would like to use their phone the way they want, android all the way. As far as outdated phones go - Apple has released a new iPhone every summer since 2007, while sprinkling in updates to capacity and color in between. iPhone users are typically locked into the same contracts as Android phone users, so what's the difference? Android gives you more phone choice so at least you'll have more say in what you are stuck with for a year or two.

Exactly which companies are you talking about that provide poor Android customer service? Google owns the OS, over 30 companies worldwide sell phones that run the Android OS, and they are sold to customers of every major cell phone carrier in this country.

I have an Droid X. I thought I would miss the physical keyboard of my enV Touch. But with Swype, I couldn't imagine going back to a physical keyboard. I hate typing words out letter by letter now. Just go with something with a large screen, it makes it even easier if you have big fingers...

Android phones are always getting better and better.
iPhone, you are always guaranteed to already be behind in technology. Just put a fancy wrapper on it, and call it "better".
Since Android is an OS, and not a phone company, they have no control over how technology continues to improve and evolve. Apple's slow reaction and slow developmental cycles blow. iPad 2 came out, and its already behind the Android tablets, but because of the name and fancy wrapper, it sells like gangbusters.
