View Full Version : Got a 3rd gen? want auto-on headlights? Here's how...

Usually, I'm pretty secretive with my plans and designs, but I figure what the hell... I'll share some stuff. I'm also planning to make a few(3-5) plug and play kits to sell once I have a prototype made and tested...

-----------------------------------------------------------

OK, This idea started with my desire to delete the headlight switch on my "89 Iroc-Z build. I figured in my V and Cruze I almost never touch my headlight switch so Auto-On lights would solve my issue. Having dealt with DRL bypasses in my SS, my Denali, and recently my CTS-V, I got a pretty good understanding of how some DRL systems work.

So this morning I started planning this by using components out of a LS1 F body(camaro more specifically). Firebirds/Trans Ams didn't have Auto-On lights but they do have all the components minus the photo-sensor on the dash(has a resistor in its place). Looking over wiring diagrams and pin-outs of the DRL module I drew up a little wiring diagram, and yes, I know it isn't a 100% correct schematic, I'm sorry, but it gets the idea across.

In a simple install, the DRLs are retained and the parking lights will act as normal 4th gen DRLs would. Knowing that 4th gens had bulb/socket melting issues, I worked in a DRL bypass option. There are two options for that which only slightly vary. One is a direct connection/tapping of rear directional wires, and the other, is the use of two relays and tapping power from the original turn signal fuse, that way there is no excess load on any one circuit. I would recommend the relay version.

Don't be too critical of my work, lol.

Oh, and if anyone ever decides to use any of my work and/or designs, I only ask that they reference me if it ever comes up, haha.

I like and very eager to see you get this done and some kits made :)

Sounds pretty cool. I might try it as well. Ok so you are going to make the front turn signals the DRL's and not the head lights?

4th gens already have the turn signals as the drl, not the headlights. I would bypass drls anyway due to concern of bulb/housing overheating

I dont think the heat issue would be a problem because the sockects and bulbs in a third gen are the older style bulbs with the metal socket.
