Hey guys....I'm working on another old Datsun here and the stock door panels have two "chrome" stripes across them 3/16 in width. They are some sort of foil tape from the factory and notorious for peeling off over time.

My customer had a brand new OEM door panel for the passenger side but asked me to try and repair the driver side. You can't get OEM panels anymore and the aftermarket ones come sans chrome trim. The chrome pieces are actually part of the door panel and can't be removed so vacuum chroming them is not an option.

I'm thinking a pinstriping tape in chrome is an option but worried that the adhesion won't be strong enough. The tape doesn't lay flat...it rounds off over the top and bottom and it's such a small radius that I'm afraid it will peel up. Anyone have any other ideas besides some blinged out pinstriping tape from Pep Boys? I was also thinking of using the tape but putting a thin layer of model glue down before it??

Ive never had a problem with chrome vinyl coming up. The chrome vinyls are more of a metal tape and generally thicker than regular vinyl. The thicker vinyl tends to conform to a shape once it is set.

In my experience, low quality chrome vinyl starts to pit and tarnish with long exposures to sun. I know you take a lot of pride in your work, so I would stay away from pep boys vinyl products haha

Ive been getting vinyl from Earl Mich Company. They have a good variety of grades. I have not bought any of their chrome vinyls but I expect the quality would be the same as the regular. I usually receive stuff in 4-5 days from ordering from them.

No luck so far with this and I've spent a ton of time. Your supplier didn't have a chrome tape. Got the AutoZone stuff but it won't hold. The plastic on the door panel must have been made with lots of petroleum in it. I've tried scuffing it and I've tried using a number of adhesives between the panel and tape including super glue, crazy glue, model glue, and 3M super 77 adhesive.

Anyone else have any ideas? I'm wondering if I can put a little epoxy primer over the plastic and then use the tape over that?

Call Mark at PAL Automotive in Piscataway, he'll be able to either sell you what you need, or tell you where you can get it. He's been doing detail, and appearance for more years than he would admit.

Will the customer want to go with painted pinstripes? Thinking that would far outlast any tape.

I've never seen a chrome paint that actually looks good so paint isn't really an option.

Sorry, I was thinking silver, or another offsetting color.
