 going to have to talk to my dad about doing a motor swap on the boat with one of these things ...

At 70k a pop you better not have a big boat!

 70k? Jesus... I know the Yamaha O/B we have on there now is like 15k new... 70k is insane.

Compared to a comparably powerful inboard motor it isn't bad, especially when the weight savings of an inboard/outboard setup.

But still... 70k can get you a pretty decent whole other boat.

you don't get a boat that will be capable of 70+ mph though lol

if i'm dropping 70k on a motor it better put me at like 90+mph on the water lol... even though idk who in their right mind would want to go that fast on a boat for any extended period of time

I'm sure these motors are capable of doing 90+ mph in a boat about 30 ft long, but the video said they can push a 40+ ft boat to 70 mph....for 70k, I think it's worth it. 70 mph on the water is crazy fast, and in a boat over 40 ft long, that's just rediculous

I guess you're right... fastest i've ever been on the water was like 65ish and that was fast enough for me.

Inboard or hell, even a O/D is much better than an outboard.

Silly things.

90mph in a boat? Yikes.

Plus, spread your wallet WIDE for that.

Wallet gets spread and your ass puckers up because 90mph on a boat would scare the hell out of me lol

In what way? Not necessarily.

Ease of working on, which equates to cost of maintaining them to you.

The outboard's lesser draft, ability to tilt completely out of the water, etc might outweigh that for certain people. It all depends on what you want, that's why I said that before. Boats aren't cheap; not everyone who has a boat has maintenance cost as their only concern.

i have to agree with matt on inboards being cheaper to repair. With these motors though, what is the actually weight savings? Usually outboards are smaller motors than their inboard's of comparable horsepower but with these, you have a big v8 with a supercharger, doesn't seem like you would be saving much weight.

You don't really, the real advantage is the room it frees up in the boat hull, but you also need to have a strong ass transom for that sort of setup. Also OB are much cleaner running compared to a large diesel etc, so people like em more. Also, ruin a OD prop and you can fix it relatively easily, do that on an inboard, and you be an idiot and screwed.

For an inboard compared to outboards you lose all the steering gear, prop shaft, bearings, and no stuffing box to leak like a damn sieve.

They are cheaper/easier to maintain, I never denied that. If you're even thinking of spending this much moeny on an outboard though, cost is not your #1 concern.

These would still weigh significantly less for several reasons...You can put one of these instead of 2 Mercury Verado 250-300 hp motors (or 2 of these instead of 4 Verados). I believe they said these would weigh less than a comparable i/o when the outdrive is taken into account as well.

Only if you're afraid to work on it yourself. In 22 years of boating, the only "big" money I've spent was on the speed parts I put on the jet boat. That was $700 that was worth it and enhanced the value when I sold it. A boat is just like a car, if you mess it up it will cost you to fix it.

Guys are putting the LSX motors into a lot of the flat bottom and jet boats now and the weight savings over a big block is a huge difference with minimal power difference. Trying to run an efi setup is a little tough in an open cockpit boat though.

I don't know about him but I was talking in terms of fuel usage for a larger boat/larger engine
