If theres a LEGAL off road park in NJ other than the Pine Barrens, someone please fill me in. Closest for legal hill climbs, rocks and trailriding I know of is Rausch Creek in Joliet, PA.

I'd be down for a trip to Collier's Mills or Wharton some time. Not sure if there is anything closer to you.

No, there aren't any actual off road parks. But, as I'm sure you know, any roads in NJ state parks are legal. Nothing hardcore, but fun to get out in the woods, splash a little mud on the Jeep, and have fun with some friends. I want to get out to Rausch Creek sometime, haven't had a chance or a worthy Jeep yet.

Last I knew there was a guy with a bunch of land in Wantage that was looking into opening an off road park, but I haven't heard any info on it in months. There was a thread on Jeepforum about it, but I think it has died off. There is also a bunch of work going on a park in the Hazleton, PA area.

Nothing here in NJ that's crazy and legal unless you know someone with private land that will let you tear it up.

Considering that I live in Wantage, I should find see what's going on with this one...

I think the park you're referring to near Hazleton is in Northumberland County (Shamokin area). A handful of dedicated locals has been working on developing 6,000 acres of county land into a park that can be used not just by 4x4s, but also dirt bikes, quads, mountain bikers, hikers and other outdoor lovers. I had the opportunity to check it out this past April; the organizers invited our club out for the day to tour the property. I think we barely covered 2/3 of it. There are only main access trails at this point, but the land has the potential to be the next Paragon. There was one crazy rocky hill climb that a few members broke parts on. There's a lot of work to do, though. The property is abandoned coal mining land, and the locals have been using it as their county dump forever. We passed acres of discarded tires, appliances, garbage...even a car or two. At one point, we heard gun shots...and they were getting closer...and then stopped. We ended up driving right through an area where some locals were doing some skeet shooting. Thankfully, they stopped as we approached, but it was unsettling to look down and see pieces of orange clay pigeons all over the place. The area is also dirt poor and in the middle of nowhere, but the organizers are hoping that the park users will bring in business. AFAIK, the project was just recently approved, so development has begun. Looking forward to seeing how it goes!

thats pretty sweet... scary though if people are fireing guns blindly into the woods... you wanna take a ride to bayville adam one of these days see what its about? on a side note you jeep guys know any decent lockers at a fair price... i tried to concour a loose dirt pile we have ouside my work and one rear tire spun and one front spun... so i need lockers... bad... pretty sure the front axle is a dana 30 and a dana 44 in the rear... seeing as a set of detroil lockers are gonna run probably $1K+... i was seeing if there was any other affordable options... not set on lockers i just know lockers are the best for offroading... id consider other options though.. justin you have open rears in your trail rig?\

Yea, my '96 is regeared, but still open front and rear. Unless I come across a pile of cash before the time comes I am planning on upgrading my rear 8.25 from 27 to 29 spline and running one of the powertrax lockers. Take a picture of your rear dif and post it up - would be nice if the previous owner swapped a D44 in, but they only came stock on some 87-89s with the tow package. Far more common are the D35 and ChryCo 8.25.

Considering that I live in Wantage, I should find see what's going on with this one...

Doesn't look like it's going anywhere at the moment, but I suppose there is always hope. Where in Wantage do you live? My grandparents own a farm on 565 a few miles north of the Chatterbox.

you know what i think it is a 35. i donno why 44 poped in my head... lol. i know obvoiuly the stronger you make it the less its gonna break but are the stock d30 and d35 very weak. like is it not even worth buying lockers to fit those axles that are in there? as far as gearing goes i like the way it drives so i dont think ill go higher with the gears

Tru2Chevy
08-02-2011, 07:59 PM
The Dana 30 front is decent, the D35 is like a 7.5" 10 bolt....not really worth spending money on.

transmaro93
08-02-2011, 08:18 PM
thoughts on the powertrax "lock rite" product? its the one that just replaces the spider gears rather than the whole diff. I know it will be noisier but i dont really care about that. If i did that front and rear it would save at least $300 from going with standard lockers front and rear. and it wouldnt be dumping to much into a rear that is kinda weak. and they are easier to install... im leaning toward these

08-02-2011, 11:22 PM
Detroit full case locker or bust LOL. If you havnt joined Jeepforum already, do it lol. I would be down to take a trip thru Wharton once I get this 8.25 axle in and my new wheel bearings in teh XJ. Dont waste money on the D35 atleast get a 27 spline 8.25 you can always upgrade to the 29 spline axles and carrier.

I remember you saying that in another thread. I believe it was the yellow barn? I'm a couple miles down the road in Lake Neepaulin by the airport.

Agree. I'm building a front 30 for my heap now and picked up an Aussie locker. It's a lunchbox locker, but to install it properly in a D30 without having to do something wacky like shave some of the ring gear you have to take out the carrier. As long as you don't run a huge tire size on this combo and you are somewhat easy on the skinny pedal, it will hold up just fine. Got a buddy running 35s, 4.88s and a LockRite and in 11 years, he's only broken one axle shaft, and that was due to momentary insanity with the skinny pedal. I've got friends who really like the Aussie and I've helped install a few of them. Simple.

As Justin said, I wouldn't spend any money on that Dana 35. If you're considering any serious wheeling, you can look for a bolt in Dana 44 out of another Jeep, an 8.25 out of a Cherokee, or an 8.8 Ford out of an Explorer (Which would mean a disc brake upgrade too!).

And I've heard good things about the LockRite, too.

They are on the corner of 565 and Beemer Church Road - red barns and a big old farmhouse.

yea im on jeep forum... did alot of reading... and im probably just gonna put a lockrite int he front diff for now. its cheap and seems to work well for most people. as for the rear. is there any chance that my truck has an 8.25 rear in it.? the covers look similar and i cant tell. is there a stamping somewhere i can find. if i keep the 35 they make those super 35 kits.. they are expensive but i dont know how much a used 44 would cost. i dont have the cash right now for it so i guess ill leave it open reared for now. just sucks cause i know its not gonna do well offroad. why would jeep not put posi diffs in these trucks... makes no sense. another question is would a 44 ouit of a wrangler work?

Posi offroad is meh....better than an open rear, but still not anywhere near as good as a locker. And some did get posi rears, but not many.

See here (http://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/do-i-have-dana-44-a-3973/#post51141) for pics of the D35, D44, and 8.25. Should be able to tell what you have from that. D35 and 8.25 look pretty similar but the 8.25 has a flat bottom that sticks out from the cover a little that the D35 doesn't have. Also, you don't have ABS do you? If you do, it's definitely a D35.

As far as replacing the D35, I would just grab a 29 spline 8.25 (29 spline was stock in 8.25s on 97-01s) and swap that in. That will be all you need unless you plan on getting into some real hardcore wheeling or want to do lots of rock crawling (which we don't have here in NJ).

justin thanks for that link... after looking at the pics im pretty sure i have a 8.25 in there alread.. ill see if i can get a VIN breakdown next week to see what came stock on the truck unless someone knows a site that can do it. i have that flat spot onthe bottom of myh rear. there is a bunch of numbers onthe bottom of the pumpkin also anyone know if there is a casting or stamping somwhere that would confirm 100% its a 8.25... if it is an 8.25 this is good cause ill just put a locker int here and one in the front and ill go have some fun. being its a 2000 it should have 29spline axels. i have a pic on my phone ill try and get it up

I'm down whenever.....I'll bring the stock '92 out to splash a little mud on it. I am free most mornings - early afternoon. Want to try for a Saturday / Sunday morning sometime?

And Brandon, don't worry about the lockers much - you will be surprised at what even a stock cherokee can handle, and even more so after lift and tire upgrade. I've only gotten my 96 stuck once, and that was from trying to go through water I shouldn't have attempted - stalled the engine in the middle of the puddle and flooded the interior :(

Just an FYI from someone whos ran lockrites and nothing but in all of his rigs.

Lockrite is an awesome cheap locker for the front axle when you've got manual hubs you can disconnect.

I ran one in the back of my 95 toyota and the back and front of my 87 chevy, both stick. I wont be running one in the back of my trooper. On the road theyre just too rough for a daily driven vehicle. They jerk the truck, still churp often, and dont unlock very easily (at least not in a manual trans truck as I think the slip in a torque converter would help them out a ton)

This build around Im gonna either fork out the dough for an ARB that I can disengage and have an open rear on the street with or try a detroit because Ive heard theyre much softer than lockrites.

O and also the lockrite, aussie, and any other lunch box locker are pretty much the same animal.
