hey guys, i just wanted some input on what balancer to go with. im doing the 355 forged build and eventually going procharged. i was looking at the jegs brand ones vs the ati ones and they are about 200 difference in price. how come some are so expensive, what is the meain difference in them and which one would you guys suggest for doing this on a budget, one that is better but not overkill.
thanks
jim

You are aware that the LT1 damper is a pulley as well, right?

In short...
ATI is the best balancer made. It is designed to absorb engine harmonics far better then the rest. It also comes with their steel hub.
The other requires the use of your OEM hub and its construction is nowhere near the quality of ATI.
Hope this helps answer your question.

Take note that is an underdrive pulley as well. I wouldn't mess with one. I do have an ati unit though and it is a nice piece.

i was trying to research underdrive pullies and the advantages but i really couldnt find much info. i guess i will be adding that to the list. i know they have different measurements and sizes, which one would you go with? just an OEM sized one?

Yeah definitely OEM. ATI's are more for high rpm motors too and I believe they don't recommend aluminum ones on the street.

Wow, Brian will love that. I hid mine in the bumper. I want something for the p/s reservoir though.

ahh, thats a good idea, i didnt even think of that, that power steering res. is so ugly. im going to look for ideas on that. if i find any i'll let u know

That's not bad, you just have to look at the hose sizes on the current setup and how you can adapt to their sizes. I saw on ls1tech, a guy had his right where the receiver/dryer mounts for the a/c in the cup holder looking bracket. That keeps the lines on the same side as factory and fills the pocket in nicely on the strut tower.

I don't think so, but it's this guy:

Not as bulky so I could tuck it away in the Nova's engine bay. And you can adjust the height if needed.

Just something to remember. If you change the balancer hug ( if you adding a blower you will want a key'd hub and billet) and pulley you will need to make sure that the SC pulley remains in alignment with the blower so you don't end up loosing or tearing up belts. Some of the after market stuff is designed only to work as a stock pulley would, and can have extra material to meet te SFI rating so it could will result in the SC pulley being futher forward.
I bought my hub from Thunder racing, bt I'm sure others mae then as well. You want to also make sure the hub seats properly on the crank and may need to bevel the lip so to not score/dig into the crank where it starts to flair before the front bearing, if it does it can result in crank failure, snapping the snout off. This was a problem found some years ago with the Eagle crank design and and the billet hubs.
Due to my ET, I need a SFI pulley and was looking at the JEG's unit, but found no one running one, everyone that I know is running the ATI. I Plan to try the Jegs unit over the winter.
Underdrive pullies can affect the charging system and hapens often with L1s, you would need to change the alt. pulley to compensate. Power steering and AC isn't effected as much.

so if i buy the ATI unit i cannot use the hub? or can i purchase one from them that os keyed? i do plan on getting a S/C. i will make sure that it does not dig into the crank, ill have my machine shop look at it.

Brian runs a big block ati unit. He had to have spacers machined for proper belt alignment. He can tell you all about it.

Not trying to start anything here but what sort of testing have you done to confirm that ATI is the best and that it's in fact designed to absorb engine harmonics far better than the rest?
