U haul Trailer Rental

Has anyone had any experience with this?

Just curious as it would be impractical for me to get a trailer but would be very nice to be able to drop my POS off at a shop etc.

Ive got them a lot in the past. $50 for 24 hrs local. 14 more for insurance. 4 flat connector, 2" ball hitch.

Local as in you just need to bring it back to where you rented it?

And is there an age thing to rent one?

Yea. U bring it back where u got it. Otherwise it goes by distance kinda to where u return it. It was like 150 for me to take one 325 miles.

I never remember them asking age. I know i got them long before i was 25.

They do ask what ur towing and with what truck and it must fit their "allowed combinations". Some f bodies are "too low". So you may just say youre towing a 2wd s10 instead... They dont check nor really care.

I think you might need to schedule a pick up so someone local has a trailer for you. They also have a strict weight requirement for the tow vehicle but obviously you shouldn't have that problem.

I believe they do. Just give a place a call and get an answer that's 100%.

I'm gonna knock down a few telephone poles when I pick one up. I feel it.

If you want a full trailer instead of a dolly, call them and confirm MANY times that it's there. Years ago when I got my Monte, the local UHaul said they would have a trailer for me, and when I called the morning I was scheduled to pick the car up, they only had dollies on the lot. We were NOT gonna tow the Monte from Nassau back to North Jersey (across the LIE, Throgs Neck, and GWB) on just a dolly. :shock: I wound up having to do a one-way rent and fortunately found a full trailer at a UHaul in Nassau, about a mile away from the guy's house.

Agreed. There have been several times that I went there to pick it up and they said it wasnt available. Do not call their main number. They are completely useless. Find out the phone number of the store you want to go to and schedule it with them.

I did what you are doing a handfull of times. In my opnion, its not worth it. By the time you drive to UHaul to pick up the trailer, pay for the rental, drive back to your house to get your car, and drive back to UHaul to drop off the trailer, its easier and cheaper to call a tow truck. I guess that is unless you are having it towed a great distance.

Call a few different tow companies and get quotes. I think there are even a few tow truck drivers on this board. Maybe one of them can cut you a deal?

I rented a UHaul and car trailer (Auto Transport) this summer. It wasnt a bad experience.

I would suggest that you rent the trailer by going through the website, and do it about 7 days in advance. They will call you to confirm the rental and they will want you to come in early to make sure your vehicle is able to tow the trailer. They also want to know that the vehicle you are hauling is not too much weight.

Tow trucks, unless you have AAA Plus, are a LOT more expensive to pickup and deliver a car, been there, done that. Its $54.95 and the insurance was only about $14 for the trailer like Paul said.

Also the front tie downs were basically part of the trailer.

Would be trailering a car down to DE or PA, and then another down to Point pleasant, def not a cheap tow if I got my AAA to do it.

I've used u-haul trailers. They get the job done, and thats about it. Their braking systems are less then desired(the inertia hydralic) even if they are working properly.

For the weight of a fully loaded car trailer, I would like to see electric brakes & 2 5/16 balls used. Unfortunetly not everyone has that so thats why the standard 4 pin flats are used.

i will never rent a trailer from U-haul again, i rented one to get my old stang home, after i looked over and saw the hacked together wiring, the smashed fenders and dry rotted tires, i told them to find me a better trailer, they refused and me being in a pinch, i took it anyways, nothing worked on the trailer, lights, brakes, i mean nothing, and their hackjob wiring blew the fuse on myuncles pick-ups trailering wiring. i know it was their trailer as he just went claming the day before and had no issues with his boat trailer

FYI budget trailers are cheaper, but dont work on anything but their trucks, they have bare wires that go into spring clips on the truck, not sure of penske trailers, also know anyone that does landscaping? toss em a few bucks to borrow the trailer

Nah I do not know anyone with a car trailer, so just looking for something to haul short term things. May look into a trailer over the winter, but rents may, er would kill me if I added a car trailer to the driveway.

theres a U-haul spot on 37 in toms river i used for trailer rentals. the first one he gave me the lights didn't work and he goes ok just pick another one thats back there and bring it up so i can get the number off it. If its a bigger U-Haul rental dealer they mave have more than one, if you go to a gas station than they might only have one.

I have used them about four times with good success. on thing to remember the tire staps are only good to 31 inch tires, i just used another strap hooked to thiers to make up the difference and it worked great. the key is to try to get a newer one. and believe me you can tell the difference
