I recently bought a 69 Chevy C10 pickup. It is a long wheelbase 2 wheel drive. It is supposed to have a 350, but I cant find the numbers on the head, it is a 2 barrel carb with a 3 speed on the floor that someone converted off the column. They also put in a car 3 speed so I dont know what the original trans is supposed to be. The truck also did not have the proper bed on it when I got it, nor the rear bumper and the exhaust was partially cut off.

This is the day I got the truck home.

http://i494.photobucket.com/albums/rr302/notchbackgta/69%20Chevy/IMAG0701.jpg

Surprisingly the cab is in pretty good shape except the floor, that will need to be replaced eventually. Also the door skins and bottoms will need to be replaced, which I got last night. But the cab doesnt have the usual rot around the front and rear windows which then rots the inner "headliner" and the rest of the cab out.

As of now I have ordered new front to rear stainless brake line since I found one place where it is rotted pretty good, all new brake hoses all around, rear bumper. I also got a bunch of small misc stuff and the door skins and bottoms. Over the weekend I took the passenger side door off and apart so I can repair the door bottom and then put the new skin on.

For the most part I am just putting the truck to stock like condition. I am actively looking for the proper bed, either a fleetside or a stepside, but I think i would rather have the fleetside. If anyone knows of a 67-72 bed in decent condition for sale almost ANYWHERE I am willing to go look at it. I found one in VA on a truck board, but it is a 6 and a half hour drive :(

Should have updates during the winter as I want to get the Camaro back in the garage and be able to use the truck as soon as I can

Nice truck Bear!

Thanks.

Over the weekend I also installed a stock exhaust system since anything more than stock would be overkill on this engine.

Also I plan on either a semi gloss black with dark grey bumpers and wheels for now or I am thinking Cyber grey metallic with black trim, bumpers and wheels.

In the end I may go with a green metallic and a white top, but I havent thought about it too hard.

Gotcha. Looks nice though. So what's your total project count now? 4?

And FYI, I have a 600 Holley 4bbl you can have for free if you want it.

I appreciate the offer but if i do any engine work on this project it its getting a fuel injected engine from a new truck. I am not going to bother with any gen 1 engines if i can help it, i already have manifolds that will work on an ls and i already want to get the fuel tank out of the cab so i am thinking of trying to see if i can get a tank out of an S10 to side hang under the bed.

If i were counting i suppose this would be project number 3, lol if you don't include the house. I really wanted/need a truck so almost all this work is to get me into a truck that i really wanted anyway.

It's a '72 502/TH400 truck in the movie I think. They don't show an underhood, obviously, but that's what the prop guy said years ago.

OK this is the wheels that the truck has on it. I think they are from an 80's Chevy?
I just threw the trim ring on for the picture, I need tires so I will just leave them off until I get new rubber on the wheels. Or I may have them broken down and paint them before I put the new tires on it

Got the rear bumper on

http://i494.photobucket.com/albums/rr302/notchbackgta/69%20Chevy/IMAG0728.jpg

Also started taking the rear brake lines off, passenger side came off with little effort. Drivers side tube nuts are stuck to the lines despite soaking them several days already. Hosed it down a little more tonight and will do again tomorrow, but if it doesnt break loose I will just cut it to make it easier to remove.

http://i494.photobucket.com/albums/rr302/notchbackgta/69%20Chevy/IMAG0734.jpg

Rock Auto shipped my power steering hoses, brake hoses, door locks and ignition cylinder. The door locks wouldnt let the key go in and since the ignition is in the dash I twisted the key in it one day. I carefully bent it back, but I thought that if I ever did it again the key would fatigue right off. All for the better anyway so I have two sets of keys and they arent worn to stubs.

Are you keeping it a long bed?

Yeah, switching to a short bed would be stupid :rofl:

My cousin and i found out tonight that the truck is a 307 :( no matter i will eventually switch it out for something fuel injected and 307 should get decent gas mileage.

Got the brake lines and hoses on today and brakes bled. Now i feel safer to drive the thing once it is ready for the road. Once i took the front to rear brake line off we started folding it to put it in the garbage and it broke in the place where it was rusted. Also got the passenger side door back on and put together. The door is shot, the frame is rusted through by the upper hinge and is cracked. Keith from Custom Works Performance is going to try to find me some nice rust free California doors that i can put on the truck.

Got the truck out of the garage yesterday, started it up, stalled a few times and then died and would not re-start at the end of the driveway

PolarBear

So, the truck died when I was trying to move it around after I got it out of the garage. I thought it was crappy gas. Pulled a plug out of it yesterday and that looked normal, not wet like I thought it was going to be, so I sprayed come carb cleaner in the carb and she fired right up. Did that a few times and looked down the throat of the carb while it was running, but I didnt see any fuel being pulled.

Looks like it may be a weak fuel pump, or the carb just needs a rebuild. I have been looking around trying to find a carb kit for a Rochester 2 barrel, not so easy. Then I thought of Napa! They have LOTS of 2 bbl parts, so i pull the number off the carb 7024110. None of the kits for the 69 C10 307 list that number in any of the kits. So i go to the 350, same kits. Google the number and it comes up 64 Corvette, Chevy II and Chevelle 283! Well at least Napa had the rebuild kit for it. Got a new fuel pump on order too, but I have to say if the fuel pump fixes it I am not going to rebuild the carb, lol.

Should have that stuff early next week.

Got my fuel pump and carb kit today. Swapped out the fuel pump and was a little disappointed, still wouldn't start. So I pulled off the carb and started taking it apart.

I have to say, this 2 barrel Rochester has like no parts in it compared to the 4 barrel Holley I have on the Camaro! My uncle came over and actually did the rebuild and I am glad he did because he did a few other things that I wouldn't have known. So anyway when we got it apart we found this;

http://i494.photobucket.com/albums/rr302/notchbackgta/IMAG0873.jpg

Turns out the plunger had a spot where it was pinched and it was stuck in the bore. That's why it wasn't letting me start it.

Sounds like you nailed it, but I have a Rochester manual around here if you ever need it.

Slight update for the truck. it has been sitting around all this time waiting for a bed. I had sold my Miniram intake to someone over at NastyZ28 a few years back. Then a thread popped up over there that he had got his fathers truck and he was turning the LWB into a SWB and he got a short bed and frame and swapped his cab over to it. So Shane and I struck up a deal and I am getting his "old" GMC frame and bed. I had planned on going to pick it up, but we worked something out and another member from NastyZ28 is going to actually deliver it for me! So I should have that in a few weekends. I am a bit excited as I haven't had a usable truck this whole time. Initially I am going to put the new bed on my frame so I can drive it around and during that time I will paint and rebuild the entire chassis on the new frame. Then I can swap everything over to the painted frame and get rid of this frame since it isn't in the greatest shape.

Well this showed up in my driveway today!

http://i494.photobucket.com/albums/rr302/notchbackgta/69%20Chevy/20131116_154213.jpg

I am stoked to have a fully complete truck finally!

I am going to put the bed on the brown truck initially, then I will paint the other frame and related parts, replace all the bushings in the suspension then put the BBC in there with the 6 speed using the mechanical clutch linkage. I have read that the BBC headers from the 2nd gen may work in the truck, so I may fab up a dual exhaust, but I may just use the manifolds I bought a while ago and do a single exhaust instead. I am not looking for a max effort engine, just something to drive around town to the store and the ecological facility.

I am never going to stop spending money on vehicles  Don't need a whole lot for the truck at least, but I do want to update a few things and I will eventually have to fix the seat since the seat foam is all worn down and the seat cover is in need of replacement. Those are both relatively expensive.

Finally! A whole truck!

http://i494.photobucket.com/albums/rr302/notchbackgta/69%20Chevy/20131123_160616.jpg

It's not really fit for much other than around town since the trailing arms are rusted out the the tires are old and dry rotted. I'll get the insurance started back up and the registration renewed so I can at least get to the ecological center with brush and junk/trash

Also this frame will be all cleaned up and painted later in the season and then transfer all the sheet metal over, along with the BBC and the 6 speed! Need to get some carriage bolts for the bed and hook up the tail lights still

I am also going to fix the doors. I have skins and the lower panels to put on.

Fortunately most of the stuff for the truck has been pretty inexpensive. I got a full cab floor and with the shipping it was only in the $400 range. Buying the full floor was cheaper than buying all the patch panels I need.

I am not entirely sure what color I want yet. I am thinking Citrus green or the Corvette grey, both would have the white stripe down the side with the lower trim panels and the white cab top. Not sure what to do for the interior color though, whether I do it body color with black dash pad or completely black or grey inside.

One of the first things I want to do is get the fuel tank out of the cab. I am reading about side hung tanks, but I am not sure whether it will be possible. I will also make the stock filler location work with any tank I decide to go with. I don't want the door in the side of the bed or in the rear stake pocket or behind the rear tail light like I have seen a lot.

sweetbmxrider
01-14-2014, 08:17 PM
What about something in the bed that is filled directly at the tank?

Nah, that's even worse. I like to stock fill location. Making a tube to run through the floor and then to the new tank won't be hard to do. I just don't want to smell gas inside the cab anymore.
