View Full Version : Seriously...WTF? Half Staff Status, Radio hosts getting fired?

Anyone else here feel that half staff status for Whitney is okay?
Radio hosts fired/suspended for calling her a crack ho and a drug addict?
I think all this is rediculous, I'm not a racist or anything like that. Whitney gets half staff, So why didn't Clarence Clemmons? And she was a crackhead, yes originally cocaine and crack but than was hooked on prescription meds. Which if you are an addict, than the presc.meds are just a substitute.
Half Staff should be used for its original meaning, Not cause some girl from NJ became a pop star than turned drug addict for remaing 20yrs of her life.... oh, but thats more important than the soldiers, vets, etc..

It's wrong. IMO he's using this as a political opportunity. But staying apolitical, it breaks the rules on flag use. Yes, there are accepted rules on these things. lol

Can the governor order the US flag half-staffed for anyone he or she chooses?
halfstaff_state
No. Section 7m of the Flag Code authorizes a governor to half-staff the US flag upon the death of a present or former official of the government of the state, or the death of a member of the Armed Forces from that state who dies while serving on active duty.
The President, by comparison, is authorized to half-staff the US flag by proclamation upon the death of principal figures of the US Government and the Governor of a State, territory, or possession, as well as in the event of the death of other officials or foreign dignitaries.
We recommend flying the state flag at half-staff.
In the News: Governor Wrong to Have Flag Lowered to Half Staff for Celebrities [February 16, 2012]
A recent change allows governors to order the flag to half-staff to honor fallen soldiers from their state (see Public Law 110-41). The change was the result of governor proclamations, like this one from Governor Granholm of Michigan.
Some object to this extension of a governor's authority because they feel half-staffing the flag for every fallen soldier can be seen as anti-war. Some feel that overuse cheapens the symbolic power of half-staffing the flag, traditionally reserved for political leaders.
more on this
http://www.usflag.org/uscode36.html#36
(m) The flag, when flown at half-staff, should be first hoisted to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The flag should be again raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day. On Memorial Day the flag should be displayed at half-staff until noon only, then raised to the top of the staff. By order of the President, the flag shall be flown at half-staff upon the death of principal figures of the United States Government and the Governor of a State, territory, or possession, as a mark of respect to their memory. In the event of the death of other officials or foreign dignitaries, the flag is to be displayed at half-staff according to Presidential instructions or orders, or in accordance with recognized customs or practices not inconsistent with law. In the event of the death of a present or former official of the government of any State, territory, or possession of the United States, the Governor of that State, territory, or possession may proclaim that the National flag shall be flown at half-staff. The flag shall be flown at half-staff thirty days from the death of the President or a former President; ten days from the day of death of the Vice President, the Chief Justice or a retired Chief Justice of the United States, or the Speaker of the House of Representatives; from the day of death until interment of an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, a Secretary of an executive or military department, a former Vice President, or the Governor of a State, territory, or possession; and on the day of death and the following day for a Member of Congress. As used in this subsection -
(1) the term 'half-staff' means the position of the flag when it is one-half the distance between the top and bottom of the staff;
(2) the term 'executive or military department' means any agency listed under sections 101 and 102 of title 5; and
(3) the term 'Member of Congress' means a Senator, a Representative, a Delegate, or the Resident Commissioner from Puerto Rico.

Agree 100%
My GF is a fan of Whitney and we actually talked about this tonight. With my Military background, I think its very wrong and the honor should be reserved for military or high-level political persons only. My GF even agrees with me.

Everybody knows about her DRUG habit, but I have never heard a word about who supplied those drugs to her! Was it Bobby Brown and if so, WHERE THE HELL WAS HE BUYING THESE DRUGS. Go after the source and nail their ass to the wall. I cannot understand all these famous people (that are supposed to have common sense) always on drugs. Shoot, give me $50,000,000 and I still would never try a drop of that crap, but they take it like candy. Just my :2cents: rant.

Absolute disgrace. And or anger at stupid american ideals.

If you want to lower a flag, lower the NJ flag. Definetly not the American one. I think Micheal Jackson didn't get a lowered flag and he was a bigger entertainer.
Disgraceful in my opinion. Just because you were a great entertainer for a few years doesn't mean you command that much respect. Even then, her offstage behavior has eclipsed her voice to many people.

If she did alot for the troops like free USO shows and went over seas to see the troops like a Bob Hope type person then I dont have a problem with it. When I was stationed on the USS George Washington Aircraft carrier we had 3 Doors Down come out to the boat when we were in Portugal and they hung out with the crew for a couple days and performed a free concert on the flight deck. They even made a Music Video with all of us in it. My boss, who in his spare time was a DJ, did all the sound for the concert so I and our whole shop got to personally meet all the band members as they spent alot of time in our Workcenter rehersing and playing us in Madden, Playing spades.. Just hanging out and seeing what we did as Electronic techs on the boat and how we lived. That was very up lifting and really helped us during our 8 month deployment.
I have no idea if she did any of that so as of now I think it would be wrong..

i feel like our troops should be honored even further than say a gov't or anything.

I agree 100% - it should only be for fallen soldiers/political figures. And, if a student dies in a school district, the flags should be lowered in that district.
After reading a few articles on this whole thing, Christie did apparently have the flags lowered to half mast for Clarence Clemons. I didn't even realize it, because nobody made a big deal about it then.

Was never a fan, nor am i familiar with virtually any of her work. I have less than no interest in pop music of any type; but it seems odd that people are so angry at her about events that she wasn't even alive to express an opinion about- much less control. Seems to me the more troubling issue is who or what is driving all this activity.

What really grinds my gears about this whole thing is that an addict's funeral plans require a full-scale police response and the entire shut down of six city blocks so that a bunch of celebrities can come to the armpit of New Jersey and mourn. The efforts being undertaken are so extensive that it's become THE top story on every newscast EVERY night.
Oh, by the way, THIS more important thing happened...

I don't think anyone can or will debate that. She didn't sing my kind of music but her voice was nothing short of amazing. Her rendition of the National Anthem was one of the best ever.
