74 camaro hood

my friends dad is restoring a 74 camaro. the car needs a new hood, he wants to go with a steel hood and put the l88 fiberglass scoop on it. i told him to just get a fiberglass hood with the scoop already in it. i cant find either of them on the internet so i can compare the prices for him. any suggestions on where to look? i know all second gen hoods are the same jus the nose sections and rear designs changed

Fiberglass requires an ass ton more work to get straight then steel. Ask any body shop, they will say get a steel hood.

thanks V for putting that much effort into your post. the last camaro you posted we actually went to look at. the car was so rotted out it wasnt even worth 1500. the guy thought he had gold and it wasnt even a z28 car.

glue on scoop looks bad. Yes any fg hood will need work, but the results will be better.

I'm sure of the quality of restoration he is shooting for. Nothing show quality mainly something to beat around with for now. And possible do a full restoration down the road.

We know there is no steel L88 hoods. I am familiar with body work and I have my doubts how well a glued on scoop will look. But its his car so...

Full fiber is your only realistic option. Go for VFN or better. No harwood and certainly no unlimited. Up22 gives fiberglass companies a bad name.

If you are doing the body work yourself and know what you are doing, sure. If the mold is meh, it takes an ass ton of sanding and materials to get the glass straight. It will never stay the same though as its just glue and constantly moving. I just dealt with this on my hood and couldn't believe the amount of work it took. I also kept getting an earfull of how steel is better :lol:

Absolutely. I saw an unlimited products hood that was essentially a big rhombus (and I'm not talking about a square). If you aren't racing and don't need the couple pounds, stick with steel all the way.

In his case, though, nobody (to my knowledge) makes a steel L88 2nd gen hood, and nobody makes a steel L88 hood scoop you can graft on to an existing flat hood, which leaves only fiber. So you have to try to find the best out of them if you just HAVE to have an L88 hood.

:facepalm: that last bit made me giggle. i havent talked to him yet, personally i dont like the L88 and would just go with a cowl hood but who knows
