A friend whom I have know for years is selling his truck. Look at it for a reliable parts getter and tow vehicle. Not a DD. He used it as a DD and towing race car and project cars on occasions. Did tow my '56 Olds w/o issues.

'99 Silverado, 5.3L, Z71, Tow ball (2 5/16), ext can short bed, 4WD. trans just rebuilt (4L60E) and new ball joints, toe rods , ect. Body is decent sans for minor stuff. Everything works. blue/ black. mileage 216k
asking 3500
Dont have pictures, but mechanically what goes wrong with these trucks? Is this a good price or should I look elsewhere? Not really looking, but it happened to pop up.

Two buddy's have 5.3 half tons... no major issues with either besides the normal (radiator, accessories, ball joints). Neither of them are anywhere near that in mileage but wiht a rebuild trans and replaced basic wear parts, what is the worse thing that happens?
Those motors are a dime a dozen and can be found for under $500.

The trans is the big issue. And it looks like that has already be taken care of.

Thats a lot of miles, plus if you look a year or two newer, you get things like 4 doors, even later had 17"s stock. With that much road time id be worry about rust also. Fuel pump if hadn't been replaced already can be pricey for a delco unit.

Look for frame issues, cracked springs, shackles, rear brake and fuel lines etc...everything that eventually wears out on these trucks due to age or rust issues.

Check the brake lines closely, they start to rust pretty quickly. I replaced all my lines on my 01 Z71 last year with stainless lines. It might be a decent truck for $2500 but I wouldn't go much higher than that.

transmission.. leaky oil cooler lines are a big one, oil consumption can become an issue, water pump, steering shaft clunk, check for excessive rust, check for exhaust manifold leak

my old 03 yukon had 130k on it, 5.3 4l60 and it ran like a beast i replaced the water pump and the steering shaft when i first got it

Good Inputs. From what I am reading regarding potential issues have been done or are good on the truck. I will look further at the frame for rust and the steering clunk. Need to ask about fuel pump.

Any reports of these motors reaching 300k?

I have a 99 Extended Cab Z71 and love it. Currently has 167k on it. Oil pressure is great, trans shifts fine. Minimal rust. The only real issue I had was rusted brake lines but I've since replaced all of those.

This is critical IMO. Replacing the lines is not TOO brutal, but if it takes out your ABS block the price skyrockets.
