*This thread was edited by NJ85Z28 on Thursday August 23, 2012 at 1:20 PM to add photos and retype information and prices
I have 3 basic options for the cam lamps.
Option A- Walnut wood colored base with white or black shade with sprocket ~ $95
Option B- Black pine base with white or black shade with sprocket ~ $105
Option C- Walnut or black with black or white shade WITHOUT sprocket ~ $85
Theres other color shades out there too I can put on there. Just specify what you need, or you can supply your own.
Each lamp comes with a 13w (equivalent to a 60w) energy saver
You can supply your own cam or sprocket or other parts you want me to use, please PM me for more information.
They all come with a silver wire. If you would like a white or brown wire please request it.
I am now using LS cams and sprockets.
I do have some older SBC Gen 1 cams I can use if you request it.
The original prototype lamp pictured below is using an LS cam with no sprocket on a walnut base with a white shade. The shade pictured requires a harp.
The black lamp pictured is using a SBC cam with an LT1 sprocket supplied by BlackbirdWS6, on a black lacquered pine base.
Each base is handmade. Pictured, the american black walnut base was lacquered with 4 coats and a sanding in between. It was cut shaped and hand sanded up to 320 grit so it looks very nice.
All proceeds are going to pay my medical bills. I have been out of work nearly a year now and I have facets disease which is a disease in which your spinal discs degenerate. It is very painful and I have been seeing alot of doctors and getting alot of procedures done on my back. My health insurance is terminated as of 8/31 because I dont have enough work hours. However at this time I cannot work with the condition I am in.
PAYMENTS-
I prefer PAYPAL nj85z28@hotmail.com or cash in person. I would also take a check or money order
GETTING YOUR LAMP
Theres a variety of ways to do this. I live a mile from Garden State Parkway exit 58. Either-
A. Meet on the GSP at a rest area
B. Pick up at my house
C. Pick up at a NJFBOA meet
D. Shipping.
If you live far or just prefer it to be shipped, I have no problem doing so. Please add $15 to your payment. I think $15 is fair as a flat rate to anyone in the club
EBAY - If you see my lamps on ebay and you are a club member dont buy through them. The price here at NJFBOA is much better and as promised its group buy pricing.

I also wanted to just add that these are really for a good cause too.. the money isnt just going to some bullcrap.
Just a quick summary for you guys who dont really know me, I've been a union electrician for over 10 years. I hurt my back very badly and have been getting surgeries and stuff. I have worked one extremely painful month this year and now the fund administrators for my health benefits are pulling the plug and tossing me onto COBRA which costs about $450 a month because I dont have enough work hours to qualify. I cant afford NOT to have health insurance because of my ongoing health problems and we have a 6 month old baby who also relies on it.

"Getting it chromed" and "depending on price" seem mutually exclusive to me.
"Getting it chromed" and "depending on price" seem mutually exclusive to me.
what i meant was i wont pay 3 times over for it chromed.
because obviously the standard price is at the top.

So you want him to find a chrome plater, pay to get a small batch of items done, and then not figure that into the price?

just findout how much it is to get it chromeplated and give people the option.
my 2 cents
whats so hard to understand?
and yes obviously factor it into the price
It's easy to understand. But without him even getting that info you stated you wouldn't pay 3 times the base price. Meaning you wouldn't pay 225 dollars.
All I was saying was that without a bulk order chrome or black chrome or whatever, it will probably be more than that.
Since you were a dick I'll be one too

I can maybe call around to find out about this chroming but honestly I've never had it done on anything and have no idea about what it may cost. I dont think it would be an option because it will probably raise the price considerably. If you wanted to have it chromed and then send it to me that may be a better idea.
Also if anybody wants to put a deposit or pay in full or just donate to my medical bills :) my paypal is nj85z28@hotmail.com just giving the option. I'll be working on these some more tonight now that i have a bunch more cams to play with.

I know my dad has several old camshafts(original Lt1 and up and crankshafts) that are pitted and can't be used any more. When I get more information about them I'll see what's up. He has a very large collection of parts lying around he is looking to get rid out.
If you are looking for old parts to turn around, let me know what you're looking for. I know he is looking to get rid of some of the parts he has.

Yes I will do that for you no problem.
I plan on making alot of these things so spread the word if you like and they can contact me here or my email (nj85z28@hotmail.com also is my paypal address).
I want to make ford and dodge ones too for those guys if theres interest. Right now im sticking to the chevys until this group buy is finished.
I showed you the pics of them all cleaned up right? I gotta post them as before/after. I just finished drilling one out about a half hour ago. Just so everyone knows im not doing some cheapo crap by taping or zip tieing the wiring down the back like the ones ive seen on other sites and fleabay. im doing it the right way. the LS1 cams are much easier because they're hollow already!!
Another update I got a sprocket from blackbirdws6 today while i was working at his house and i got the black lacquer and all the parts for the black ones including the shade so once i give the sprocket a good polishing on the buffing wheels and clean the whole thing up and assemble it after making the base I'll have some photos up. I've been waiting on the sprocket.
Also I found a guy on fleabay with LS1 sprockets for $10 and he has more than 10. Im waiting to find out if he will combine shipping on them and then I'm going to buy them all. I have a few LS1 cams coming in the mail tuesday from florida. some guy on tech gave me a great deal on them.
If you happen to see an LS cam for a good price (i would say $30 is the MAX, but FREE is better ;) ) Please pick them up for my little project.

how much would i get for making the lamp? i dont think it would be much more than the camshaft. thats if i can drill it out and how much cleaning i need to do on it. just make sure its not forged. i went through wildbillys camshafts pretty easily

Also dont forget guys it would really help me out if I got a few deposits. I'm only asking $20 for the deposit. Just because I need to buy materials of course.
If you want to wait a day or two to see the black one with the sprocket I understand. I think everyone is waiting for that.
its nj85z28@hotmail.com for paypal or you can send me a check or cash if you want. just PM for the address.

We spent some time this weekend drilling these sbc cams from WildBillyT and making the bases. The new bases are bigger around to accommodate the sprocket gear.
Also a few minor changes from the first one I built, for the black bases, I also have a black lamp socket with a black pullchain as opposed to the original which i used a push button type socket.
Here is a quick shot of one of the black bases. this one is made from pine, it has 3 coats of sealer and about 5 of black lacquer. I want it to dry for a full 24 hours before assembly but the rest of it is ready to go. In this photo it is not finished yet, it still needs a final buffing, so you may notice some imperfections. But it is so shiny and deep you can see your reflection in it. Ill have the assembled photos later tonight.

I was thinking about doing it.. but havent yet no. I'm undecided. I might try it out and see how it looks.
Blackbird i have the base just drying and need to buff it up and give the cam a final polish and assembly.
I got some more LS cams today ( a day earlier than expected ) so i have my work cut out for me.

Just have a final polish to do before its 100% so the pics may show a little dirt and discoloring from me working on it but for the most part this one is DONE. The sprocket came from and this lamp belongs to BlackbirdWS6. The cam is one of Wildbillys SBC roller cams.
For the guys wanting LS cams- I got 3 of them in the mail monday. Just waiting on the timing sprockets to come. Otherwise the rest of the parts are ready to assemble and the bases are made.

thanks :) i feel really good about it now. I think once you see the LS1 Cams with the sprockets on a black base you wont be able to control yourself anymore :) i know i cant help but display them all over the house haha. my wife loves them so its cool but how many damn lamps does one living room need she asked..
i tried to take some really detailed photos but theres some parts you really cant see. we made special plates to cap off the top of the cam where the lamp holder sits. The lampholders themselves are black unlike the first model which was gold. On the bottom the nuts are counter sunk and I used three round felt pads (four will wobble ;)) so it wont scratch on anything (and so i dont have to put a groove in the base for the wiring). They have silver 12 foot cords and black pull chains. I had this idea I'm going to try out for the pull chains a bit later using old GM keys...I think you guys will love it. Its all very clean and very sturdy. I really think if it fell the only damage would be to the floor to be honest. Not that I'm going to test that theory...
Glad everyone likes them so far

Also, would you be able to use a lifter for the bottom of the pull chain? I have plenty of those

I threw a bunch in a box with a cam and sprocket coming your way via dump truck delivery. If you gut the lifter and drill a hole through the end cap, feed the chain through and crimp/connect something to the chain so it can't pass through the hole, and reassemble with no internals, should work pretty good :)

Just so everyone reading this is aware. I edited my original post just now to clean it up. The original post was made when the first lamp was built and alot of things were brought up and added or changed. Ive had alot of questions about shipping and pricing differences.
Like I originally said the black with the sprocket would be a little more. The reason is that the black parts a little more, the base takes more work and lacquer to get that deep black shine, and I bought the sprockets in bulk.
I also added my paypal information and whatever else was important.
Thanks everyone for the kind words I'm very pleased with these and I think everyone will be extremely happy with them
If theres any questions just PM me :)

Steve was in the area today so we arranged to meet up so he could deliver the lamp. I think the lamp came out great! There is a lot of work put into this with a lot of little details. Even the wife thought this was nice enough to put in our house and not in the garage. I like that he included a CFL lamp as well. Below are some pics I took. I am going to get a spark plug or something else to hang from the pull cord.

Also thanks for taking those pictures, even with my nikon d3000 i can seem to take good photos..I actually borrowed these pictures you took for my ebay ad and ls1tech ad.
Just an update for everyone waiting for a lamp- All the parts are ready to assemble I'm just waiting on my sprocket delivery which is scheduled for Monday. Once they arrive and are cleaned/buffed up I can assemble them and get them to you guys.

It was a great idea. Im hoping to finish yours in the next few days. I lost a few days waiting on parts to arrive for the ls cams but then a miracle happened. I found out i was only 24 hours shy of my benefits so i called my union and they pulled some strings and got me a job up north for the 3 days i needed. Now i should qualify through december. So there was 3 days i got nothing done on the lamps. I figured you guys would understand

im liking the lifter pull chain. just looking at it though i think it would be sick if you could find a way to get some sort of eye hook at the top under the shade to route the pull chain through to get the pull chain to hang out to the side about an inch away from the cam :D

Alright guys, you wanted it. You asked for it, so here it is.. the Holy Grail...or the phantom edition..whatever you want to call it. The definition of badass.
LS1 Cam. LS1 Timing Sprocket. Black base. Black Shade. Black lampholder. Black chain. Lifter pull chain.
This one belongs to Mark68...honestly I'm sad to see it go..I think its my favorite so far...but I'm packing it up for shipping shortly...Hope you like it!

I intend to. Now if only I had an LS1 cam sitting here I could polish up and send in!
If I can't source a spare one from someone local, I may wind up just buying one of the ones Steve has in his inventory.
That newest style looks fantastic, man. You hit it out of the park and I'm excited to own one!

Steve puts a nice top mounting plate on these right under the lamp holder itself. I bet I could remove one of the bolts, slip a small metal bracket in there and bolt it back down. The metal bracket would have a small hole on the end so the pull chain will be moved over a touch. Once I get the my lifter pull chain from Steve I will try this out.

I have all the tools to tap it for the eye bolt. I just want to try it on maybe another cam first. I dont want to screw up the ones that are done already just in case its too hard to drill through the lobe. I can make something up like brian suggested and bolt it with the plate.

Its no big deal if you dont have one around. I'm getting the cams and sprockets in bulk from this guy who has a junkyard or something. he sells on ebay and tech so we worked out an arrangement. I think only 1 person has supplied their own cam so far aside from WildBilly. Brian supplied his own gear for the test mule, but Most everyone else has just been buying the whole package from me. Unless you have a cam that holds sentimental value then there really is no need to source one out. Just PM me and let me know either way if I need to supply the gear then I have to order an extra one. I have been buying them in sets ;)
Glad everyone is happy with them! I have about 4 or 5 of them scattered around the living room right now either waiting to be shipped or picked up

LOL yea it turned out great so far. no worries, i dont plan on stopping production on these any time soon. i still have ones im working on almost every day and it seems like everyone is happy with them and i keep getting more orders. i want to get on a vette forum and offer them up there too because I'm sure they will move but I want to get the majority of my njfboa guys done first.
Whenever you are ready.
Just let me know what colors and stuff so I can have the parts made, drilled and ready, and I can order the right number of gears/cams. they come from texas or something so it takes a few days to get here and in the meantime the bases are made and the hardware, etc. theres some stuff we gotta make that you just cant go out and buy like the plates and some of the hardware

Was actually wondering about this/him today, as I remember him texting me some time last week with some personal issues. Didn't want to bother him, but glad to know he's alright. Hey everyone, sorry for the absence. i have had the month from hell. everything was completely bad. 2 deaths, a broken truck, a screwed up cell phone & no internet, bank account and paypal frozen over some bullcrap, insurance cancelled, car insurance cancelled and drivers license suspended. a lamp got busted in the mail an LT1 cam killed my drill.. yea its been a hell of a month. SOO sorry to anyone who may have thought I ran off lol. I tried to touch base with everyone who had left a deposit and keep them up to date on the progress of their lamps, which has been super slow.i just havent came on the website very often unfortunately.
Mark68s lamp unfortunately was damaged by UPS. I am currently going through an insurance claim with them so everyone please consider picking them up. My heart broke when he emailed me about the damage.
Adam dropped off an LT cam and sprocket back in august, since i had been drilling the SBC cams anyway i took a shot at it. they are thinner and harder than the SBC cams, and two bits snapped off in the middle of drilling, one went through the side and during the melee my drill broke. so that was a setback. i did speak to adam and offered to swap out an LS cam at no additional charge and he was cool with it.
Since I had some time today and was feeling much better physically and not in as much pain I figured I would play with the lamps and worked on jersey mikes and finished adams. i added a standoff like somebody suggested. it started off as some random hook i found in a coffee can of old hardware, i heated it hammered it bent it shaped it and then polished it, drilled and tapped out a lobe in the LS cam and made it happen. I think it looks awesome, but decide for yourself. Im trying to engineer a way to make a retrofit kit for those guys who want the lifter pull chain..its heavy and i noticed in our living room when someone walked across the floor quickly it would clang against the cam. it didnt bother me but not much does. so i figured i would figure this out. Mark68, snuffles and blackbird if your reading this ill send you out one as soon as i make them.
Heres a photo of Adams lamp...the Firebird is there for show, but that too is for sale
Im still taking orders and getting these back on track. Thank you everyone for your patience during this hard time for me and my family

Yeah that's pretty much perfect.
Thank you. I spent a little bit more time on it than usual, figuring out what to do with the pull chain and all that. I'm very happy with it. This lamp started out as the brown based one without the cam gear that was built first. It was the prototype, and without the gear on it one my sister in laws dogs i think knocked it over and it looked a little crooked to me, so I took it all apart and made it into a completely new setup since the LT cam was toast. Like with anything else theres a definite learning curve getting to the point of perfection and I think since we started using the black bases and cam gears and different electrical parts they really turned into something extremely beautiful. Every time I post a picture on facebook I end up with 2 more orders or more. But the NJFBOA guys here are my top priority.
Also, if you know somebody whos into mopars or fords that may want one, Ill be building a MOPAR cam lamp in the next few weeks. A good friend of mine out in detroit saw the photos on facebook and is sending me his old mopar cam to build with. It should be interesting to see the differences, and maybe this can open up a whole new group of people.

Steve,
I can't stop looking at the two lamps. My brother was floored by the Mini, and it made a great birthday gift. Thanks so much man!
As for the normal lamp, the shade, the base, the sprocket and lifter are all perfect. I think you really hit it out of the park, and I've been proudly display this piece and show it off to friends and family since you delivered it yesterday! No one has been short of impressed
These things look amazing in person! I'll see what I can do about getting someone local to take some nice photos for you.

Steve, I was following your lamp builds for some time and watched your business and quality improve over time. The Mini lamp was going to be my suggestion for the 4 cylinder people (Honda-Toyota etc.) so that might also be a better choice for a kids room, less likely to fall over and hurt something.
My next suggestion is to get a Patent for these. It may seem silly, but if you ever watched the TV show Shark Tank, many a small business started with an idea. If somebody with more help and a larger shop, could turn these out faster and cheaper, you might not have enough friends to keep this business afloat. Good luck with this and I hope it expands into a business that maybe will be your dream job.

Thanks!! Even my most recent ones are drastically more time and cost efficient for me to build, while looking even better at the same time. One example is im using aluminum plates for the top instead of steel, and polishing them to match the cams shine, with two small bolts. Originally i had two large bolts, then later three small bolts with a black steel plate. The aluminum looks better and is easier to make and shape, with less drilling and tapping while achieving a more professional look. Ill post photos shortly for comparison

are you still making the MINI ones? like from 4 cyl camshafts. the desktop ones? i like my lamp so much i might want to get a smaller version for a desk i will have in the basement soon enough. whats the cost on one of those>?
Has anyone seen a cam from a four cylinder? They aren't much shorter to keep calling them mini lamps.

Hey guys sorry I havent been on much lately, things were very hectic. Anyways,
I have 2 (two) large LS cam lamps ready to go out my door immediately. I built them (black on black with sprockets) and the guy backed out. Not anyone from this club though dont worry :)
Anyway I have TWO ready to go, and since its EASTER I want to put a special price on them of $100 each plus shipping (if it needs to be shipped)
and of course if anybody else wants one who missed them the first time around and gets me paypaled with a deposit before monday i will honor this low price
then monday i start on the OFFICIAL second round of lamps. I have a box of cams ready to turn into something awesome now that I have the time again. also i have some new ideas and plans so maybe if you bought one the first time around you may see something new you love anyways. So please keep checking this thread. Thanks everybody and happy easter!
