View Full Version : Thinking of new seats

After driving my G8 everyday, the factory leather firebird seats are just not as comfortable or supportive. I would like to change the seats in my firebird to a more race oriented style that is supportive and comfortable. It seems all of them come in black or grey. I saw 6LE sold tan seat sets but I'm not sure how much I liked them.

Is my only option to buy a seat I like and have it reupholstered?

Race oriented and comfy, shouldn't be in the same sentance.

No offense to kirk but 6le seats blow, i prefer my stockers. Recaros are a popular swap i think?

But you be baller, take out seats and have a leather shop make em supple, firm and out of whale foreskin.

I like the corbeau in the lemon. If you could get one your size that might also recline AND have it reupholstered, prob be the cat's meow.

I find the more supportive seats more comfortable actually even with less padding. Kirks weren't bad but I wasn't blown away. The brackets are kinda meh but I imagine I will need to fab with anything I buy.

So if there are no tan options, which seats would you recommend? Which are easier to install?

Prob not and they may sit too tall. Have to take a look and see.

The 6LE seats are ok for the price, but I dont think the back support is that great, and theyre too tall for a roll bar. Im looking at corbeau VRX2000's but they are expensive. I think you are looking at $1k+ brackets to start for 2 decent seats. Just get your stockers stuffed with baby harp seels and wrapped in tiger pelts

corbeau VRX2000

These are actually the seats I was going to suggest, as I intend to put them in the TA down the road. But they don't come in a tan finish. I believe they're 700 or so a pop, but there are deals out there. If you're okay with black leather or suede, the CR1 and the VX2000 are two you should take a closer look at.

Or, if you want to be Mr. Mega-Baller, try to find some 2009+ CTS-V optional Recaro seats. Very nice seats; Air cooled & heated, recline-able, supportive, and comfortable. ...But we're talking $3,000 for the pair, and not Tan. #Dreamer #ProjectorGroupPurchase #EngineeringWife

I know it won't be cheap considering I will likely do the rear seat leather when I do the fronts to match. You should know better than to think I am scared of blowing $$ on this car. I was looking at the Corbeau's last night which look good. I really don't want to do anything with the stockers since I want some better support in the mid section and shoulder area.

I noticed the G8 seats can be had on ebay for somewhat reasonable prices but they actually don't look all that great by themselves. The height may be an issue as well but I can measure it for fun.

I will keep looking around but the CTS-V option is meh, but rather just buy the car.

i might suggest posting over at pro-touring and/or lateral-g, a lot more high end guys there that spend such money. you may want to consider hitting some big shows like a good guys, see what people are running and maybe even sit in some seats. you'd be surprised how many folks will let you sit if you approach it right.

Yea I think that's what I will need to do. I would like to keep the budget under $2k but depending on the custom work to make it look nice, it will probably be more. I have no impression of how much that can be but I assume it won't be cheap. I will keep looking.

Brian-

I've gone from stockers, to Sparco Torinos, to GTO seats in my car. The stockers were comfy but had no lateral support. The Sparcos had a ton of lateral support, but were miserably unpadded. The GTO seats are super goofy looking, and too big. Took way too much effort to make it work. (there are pictures around here somewhere of them in there)

I am getting ready to swap them out already and try these: http://www.corbeau.com/products/reclining_seats/gts_ii/ Only thing preventing me from doing it this winter is figuring out how to not get my seatbelt to irritate the heck out of my neck. What do you think of these? They can be had in black or grey, or can be reupholstered and still be far cheaper than recaros.

In a Fbody:

Those look pretty good in a Fbod. Did you sit in them? How bad are they to install? I have access to a welder but it would be a plus to knock this out in my garage. I do like some of the other Corbeau designs (A4, CR1, LG1) a bit better but I have no idea how they feel.

I never did get to sit in them but my understanding is they feel similar to the seats in a E46 3 Series. Corbeau makes vehicle specific adapters which, along with sliders, should make the entire operation bolt-in. That also applies to those A4s if you pick them up.

Blackbirdws6
08-18-2012, 10:43 AM
The bolt in slider option is real nice. I am going to test fit the A4s tomorrow but I have a feeling the Std model won't be big enough for my huskier build. I found a place 45 min from me that is a dealer where I can try all the different models out.

Anyone think the seats will look like ass in black with my interior?

Here are some shots from some different angles. The black would be temporary since I will likely get the whole seat setup redone to match. Just thinking it may look ok with the black seats being that its a black car, black roll bar etc. Still undecided.

The mix looks good on the vette but if I start throwing black in the interior, I'd have to do everything including door panels, console etc. All of my dark pieces are gray and not black so I would have too many conflicting colors even if I did do black on the seats.

I'm not sure if the sail panel trim from a T-Top car is compatible with a 'vert, but if you want to take them test out the look, then I can drop off the spare ebony? plastics that I have--2 rear seat plastic trim, and the 2 kick panels that run along the edge of the floor/door.

looking again at your pic, one thing to consider is your current seats have seat belt guides. Aftermarket seats may put the seat belts at a fairly uncomfortable angle.

I usually don't use the guides anyway. The vert has them lower than a coupe car and you have the option of using the guide on the headrest or not at all.

another thought that may or may not matter - do they need to fold forward? I know you back seats are only for looks, I'm just not sure if you need the seats to fold forward. some seats do not.

Blackbirdws6
08-20-2012, 05:57 AM
That's a tasteful looking seat and having them fold forward would be ideal since I do put things back there; just not people. If this Corbeau dealer actually exists and I get to try the seats, I'm going to ask if they know any good places to get them recovered. Maybe I can even buy a set uncovered or w/e. I'm pretty sold on doing the color match. I do like the racier styling but when recovered, the looks will be toned down.

I may buy the ones I like and just throw them in the car then swap them out for the stockers for shows or w/e. It's only four nuts to change them out.

Susquehanna Motorsports also sells seats and other racing equipment however they only deal with Sparco. 1.5 hrs of driving and I'm not all that confident the selection will be diverse enough to make a decision. Hopefully this place has a number of styles, particularly the ones I'm most interested in.

Seats arrived. I did a quick test fit and everything is PERFECT. These are the wider versions of the LG1s and even though I measured every which way to make sure they would fit, I was still nervous. The top bolster on the seat just touches the side bar on the 6-point. They fit and feel great so tomorrow morning I'm off to get a quote to have them reupholstered in tan leather.

Brian, are you still happy with the work your interior shop did? Would you go back? I need some rear seats recovered.

I'm happy with the work and the price was very good. My only issue was the color was significantly off which resulted in me having to have them professionally dyed the matching color. They also weren't good with a time estimate on getting them done. I was fine with waiting but I don't like being told end of the week and then I call and it will be a few more days. I would shop around if I did it again but like I said, I was happy with the quality of material, price and overall work performed. The color match was annoying because I had to pay to get it right even though I provided him with a sample of the factory leather.
