I was under the impression that dropping a lt4 in my 96 z would be a direct swap an I wouldn't need anything else but now I'm hearing it from both sides? any help would be appreciated

What do you mean by lt4? What are you trying to do and what is the story with your current motor?

Isnt the LT4 just a LT1 with high performance Heads & Cam?

Something like that. Depends what the OP is asking.

Sorry my question is will I need any additional parts to make it work since they are so similar

Swapping longblocks? Should go right in. Dont really see any big gains to be had for all of the work to do it tho...

What are you swapping and why are you? I just don't want to see you waste money especially if you are chasing power. Just need more info with what you are doing to give my advice. If you could be as thorough as possible, I'd be glad to post my opinion in what you should do especially $/pony.

Block casting won't tell you.

What are the numbers on the heads? If you don't want to pull a valve cover, look inside the oil cap/valve cover holes and see what the rockers look like.

Pull oil pan, see 2 bolt, and have some LT1.

Was just about to say the same thing. 2 bolt mains is an LT1 all the time. 4 bolt mains is either a vette lt1 or an lt4

Post some pics of entirely what you got, like full motor etc.

what year is your car? early lt1s are speed density. Not an expert but that will prob have effect on ecm and stuff no?

I am assuming he is using the motor only and reusing his sensors and wiring harness. Really the best thing for the op do is put the motors side by side and swap everything over. Things like the timing cover and gear set, knock sensor, reluctor wheel, intake manifold, fuel rail and injectors, and so on should be swapped. I believe the camshafts are different as well so technically he should swap them.

Since the LT4 came in the vets the oil pan is different and will not work.

LT4s also came in some f bods, like some 96 SS cars

I put a 92 vette lt1 in my trans am and it fit(using the corvette pan)

Yeah, looks like a 92-93 lt1.Not a 92, the fuel lines are on the wrong side for a 92.

yea i know if you swap all sensors and hardwear it will work i was just tryen to see if if knew that because hes making it sound like hes pulling his old motor and dropping this one in plug and play and if its not the same year then he will have issues..

Google images tells me the 92 vette fuel rail exits high out the passenger side. And now I know!

the motor was supposed to be out of a 94 trans am...my car is a 96 z28. as long as i use my sensors it should be pretty straight forward?

Really? We had to switch pans lol

That's weird I directly swapped it all over. I used different engine mounts so maybe it made the difference

So what year trans am is this motor from again? Mines a 94 and the fuel lines do not wrap around and sit where they are. Mine come off the back of the fuel rail directly into the fuel pressure regulator and stub out right above/behind driver side valver cover.

1993, hence featherburner being all excited

INteresting, never knew that. And i see the 93 doesnt have the crossover tube on front of the fuel rail, too..

Like I said before, the timing cover and gear set, knock sensor, reluctor wheel, intake manifold, fuel rail and injectors, etc should all be switched. Technically the camshafts are different so you should swap them too but the motor should still run fine if you don't.
