a short time before graduation i went to the recruiter to enlist in the air force as i had planned on for a long time only to be told that i was to heavy and would need to loose almost 40 pounds to enter
at my height of 5'11" i have to be 198 lbs to enter and at the time i was 236.4
at first i was so knocked down by this that i didn't do anything until about a month ago friday morning i got on the scale and it read 210.8 so i lost more than half the weight and hope that i would be at my goal by thanks giving and be done with the process by the end of the year and waiting on my deployment
so with that said i will hopefully be an aircraft mechanic while i am in and i will be doing a 6 year hitch giving me a direct bump in pay to e3 which is in the area of $1600 a month which is not bad considering that they pay for my food housing medical and cloths so i will have that money to do as i please with and I'm hoping to be stationed in the states so i can have a car to use when i get a chance and relax even if it just to go to the store so i am between a new camaro ss - wrx/sti - ralliart/evo and a few other things that catch my eye but the ss and the wrx/sti is the top 3 what does everyone think on new car in that range and if I'm making the right move
thanks

going to basic is not "deployment", just saying.

$1600 before taxes, SGLI, GI bill, etc...

The military isn't all that you may think it is. But then again, it is the air force, kinda the best choice if you are really gonna serve.

even a used new camaro SS plus insurance is not gonna be cheap.

i have some money saved for when i go in and my car to trade so payments won't be that bad i know I'm tired and said end of the year instead of after the holidays

Even without any bills it would be a squeeze to have gas, payment and insurance on a new camaro.
Figure you'd bring home about $1,200ish a month. Now figure in $600-800 in payments and insurance if you are a young guy wanting to drive a new sports car and factor in your credit rating as well.

I gross right around 3 grand a month before OT. I virtually have zero bills other than fuel, insurance, phone, daily tobacco usage, $15 for food each day, no vehicle payments. I would not want a payment on a $40,000 vehicle and full coverage on said vehicle. Could I swing it? Perhaps, but I like not just getting by making ends meet and have no money to do anything fun.

Let's say I spend roughly $40 a day between bills, fuel, food, tobacco. I pocket $110 5 out of 7 days a week which means I only make about $2,200 a month after taxes, fees, and dues. Quickly multiply $40 x 30 days in your average month and you get $1,200 a month in overhead. Dang, that's depressing... I need a new job lol.

im not saying the car has to be factory new i mean the newer style like 2010+ for both cars 09+ 370z would i like a new car yeah who wouldn't but theres other ways to buy maybe certified who knows certified you get the best of both worlds warranty and save but i don't think a warranty other than a few months is needed bc by then you will know what the car needs and i don't plan on keeping it stock

Getting a car with a payment right before you enter military service would be crazy. Wait until you are settled down, and have a *good* handle on your day to day expenses before you saddle yourself with a car payment.

2010 ss's are going fo 27-30k used all day long. I'd wait until you get out of basic and get assigned to an area. You could get assigned to a region w/more snow so a camaro may not be a choice vehicle. Next year this time you could very well be down south and a camaro is another year older...even cheaper to afford.

WayFast84
10-22-2012, 09:11 AM
You won't even need a car for a while. My friend went to basic around memorial day. After he graduated he was here for 9 days, went back to combat school and then he was sent to California for 6 months of training. They just let him off base this weekend and it's his second or third week there. So think about that before you buy a 32k car that will sit around for a year or so just depreciating.

im in a similar situation youre in. i just got a really good paying job and now im making cash ive never made before. my advice is listen to what the other guys are saying. being a young man, you have no idea where you'll be in a year, especially with being in the military. i understand the whole allure of being young and having a sweet car, but thats not all there is to it. figure you pay 30k for a new camaro..taxes right off the bat would be 2100 bucks..the taxes alone are already a months pay and then some. factor gas, insurance, maintenance and repairs, etc. and all for what, a new sports car. my advice to you is either buy an older car and fix it up, or start saving and see where you're at in a year or wait till your settled down.

i say im in a similar situation because my job is up in the mountains and i only have a camaro..it would be a pain in the ass getting there in the winter. so im looking at jeeps. it came down between buying a crappy used jeep or buying a newer one and making payments. i, like another post already said, like not living to make ends meet, id like to have some extra cash to have fun. so with that being said, im going to buy a cheaper used jeep then putting myself into debt with a newer flashy one.

Really? cam yous? You want a serious answer then take the extra 5 seconds needed to throw together legible sentences. Argh. Your posts are always like that.

Like WBT said, you wont like it. Ok here is your serious answer. Don't even think about buying a new car. It's the dumbest ****ing thing you can do. You already seem to change cars like underpants and that gets a lot more expense buying new. It's obvious you have no real life plan in action and lack any kind of internal discipline so the last thing you need to do is be saddled with 6 years of car payments. If they do allow you to join the military you need a new car like a hole in the head.

No personal attacks. :bertstare:That was not a personal attack. That was sarcasm at a request for seriousness from a train wreck of a sentence, and thread for that matter. A personal attack would be me calling you a dumb ass for not recognizing the difference. But I would not do that, of course.

@bonzohansen
i take home between 700-100 a week

If you are bringing home $700-$1,000 a week you are grossing $850-$1,300 a week at 18... why would you even contemplate joining the military?

So you can spend the next 10 years to make what you are making now? I know damn well if I pocketed $52,000 (grossed like $60,000-$65,000) a year at the age of 18 or even at my age of 22, I wouldn't have even made this thread. I would already own a WRX/5th gen/New 5.0/Z06/Duramax/or W.E and had it paid off. I would not even think about joining the military to take a severe pay cut. I'd be living in my own house within 3 years.

So my question is, if your life is as great as you say it is and you make $1,000 a week; why does this topic exist? You should easily be able to save up enough to go outright buy a new car or put half down and have a $100 a month payment.

Edit:
If I grossed $1,300 a week I'd be rolling knee deep in hoes in my brand new limo ZR1 with my chauffeur named Jeeves.

Aside from the fact that there is no such thing as "cugarettes" as you say in your latest post...

It is prohibited to sell or give tobacco in any form to a person under 19. Signs required at all points of display and sale. It is illegal for anyone 19 or older to purchase tobacco for a person under 19. NJSA 2A:170-51.1 and 4, NJSA 54:40A-4.1.

Not paying taxes is also illegal.

See how basic goes and where you end up getting stationed. Then buy a car that isn't brand new with a ton of payments since it'll still be temporary (or keep your current car). The same general sentiment has been said numerous times already.

true if thats what getting a little extra on the side is but makes sense but can we get on topic?

as to what would be a good idea when i figure out where i am and i am settled

OK, I'll give you a long winded, very preachy, straight answer.

And this comes from two places:

1.) Finance guys who do this type of thing for a living, or in other words tell people what to do with their money so they have a lot more of it later in life/can retire. They make their $ only when they give other people good advice about handling $.

2.) Hanging around on forums where younger guys buy hot cars

lest you think I'm just making this **** up off of the top of my head.

Don't buy a new/newish/expensive hot car until you are somewhat settled and have an idea of what your expenses will be in the future. It will sit and depreciate while it's sitting there. I have lost count of the number of younger guys I've seen buy hot cars/start huge HP builds only to see them A) sell the car in a year or so, or B) sell off all their parts as soon as they need to get married, buy a home, or are slapped in the face by reality.

Cars are not good investments. In the purest sense of the word investment.

Do not set yourself up to live paycheck to paycheck. Unforseen things like injuries, car accidents, loss of employment, etc will be a death sentence to your finances then.

Live well within your means. You make great money for a guy your age, but in the grand scheme of things that's nowhere near enough to be wasteful in today's climate. Many people overextend their finances thinking they "have the cash" but they don't. That's why there are so many personal bankruptcies and foreclosures. It is so bad that mortgage companies will not write you a mortgage past a certian % of your earnings for your own safety.

Avoid taking out a payment on a toy like it was covered in a bucket of AIDS. Why somebody would take out a loan for something that is not 100% necessary has never made a lick of sense to me. Banks will NEVER say "Sir, you can't afford that" as they want your money, and own your ass when you default.

Quit smoking. At $7 or whatever a pack, and a pack a day, that's $50 a freaking week, $200 a month. If you saved that for two years straight you could buy an LT1 car to play with.

and so forth.

The short of it?

Join the Air Force, find out where you are stationed, drive a beater until you are out of the service, have a real job, and have your life set up. Then re-evaluate and see what you can afford.

Mike
10-23-2012, 10:23 AM
Another thing to think about is how long you plan to serve. If you plan to make the military a career than this doesn't matter, but if you are going to do a three or 4 year thing and then get out you probably don't want a six year loan as you won't know your income the last part of it.

10-23-2012, 12:35 PM
Even though the "/thread" has been thrown I'm just going to throw my opinion out there, and pretty much echo the sound reasoning stated above. A reliable, fun car can be had in the $5000 range. Pay cash for something you can afford and save your money. You have the rest of your life to buy your dream car.

I made the mistake of buying a "hot" car when I was 18 and even paid cash, but it was still a big mistake. It ended up being a money pit, and I learned my lesson. I say this having made the mistake myself, give yourself a couple of years at least.

The basic rule for myself is, don't take out loans on toys. A good friend of mine just went out and financed a new 2013 garage queen Challenger R/T @ over $1,000 a month (MSRP 40,000+) and I couldn't help but shake my head. He works like crazy to be able to afford the new house he just bought, two other new cars, and keep up with 2 used cars. This is who I strive to NOT be.

keep in mind i am talking from experience.

i served 4.5 years active duty. my ss i had bought 6 years prior sat in my parents garage with a freshly built drivetrain . i wasn't gonna keep it in upstate ny with the horrible winters.

i bought a Saturn sky redline 8 months before deployment. it sat a year then. i drove it for 4 more months then started regretting buying it due to its impractical size. since it was such a specialized car and low miles, i owed less on it than it was still worth. i got very lucky there when i traded it in on my cts-v. now i have a more practical 4 door car. im getting engaged by the end of the year and will soon be looking at starting a family. safe and useable vehicles are taking a on a whole new meaning to me.

i planned on making the army a career but after being in it less than 2 years i knew i couldn't deal with the stupidity. however, the air force is different and have it easier. but if you DO join, work hard and be motivated. don't try to get out of work and be lazy like many are. i do not put up with that and any soldiers under me learned that real quick.

if you MUST get a newer car, make sure the loan term is shorter than your contract length. at the same time, through mypay, set up automatic allotments to pay directly out of your income monthly. do the same with insurance. get usaa too.

:bertstare:

just because the wrx is awd doesnt mean it can barrel through 5inches of snow with no problem, its still a sports car, its still low to the ground and the power split is no where near that of a truck/suv. i think maybe 20/80 front to rear where a truck is 40/60. with some snow tires it would be decent and better than and rwd car. so still your best bet for a year round beater. goooood luck

Last year it was snowing. I drove my Camaro....

Right into the garage and used my truck, as that's what 4x4 trucks (or beaters) were made for. Really, Camaro + Snow = No.

I did drive my '79 Z28 during the blizzard of '96. No choice, it was all I had. I cheated though, and picked up a set of smallish truck tires from a friend, and mounted them on some steel wheels. Car looked like ass, but I got around. Doesn't make it smart, though.

I'm not going to get into all the deyick swinging and Internet Einstein crap o rama that this thread is oozing with, but I just want to give the OP my support in his quest to join the USAF. I served right out of high school from 83-87, and it was one of the best and proudest things I ever did. I was too immature to stay past my first hitch, but after getting out I went straight to working the job I still have 25 years later. So, best of luck to you, future airman!
