View Full Version : Picking up a new toy...

I've been trying to sell my AMX for a while w/o any luck, but after all I've been through lately I decided to treat myself to a new toy. I wish my wallet was big enough for a loaded Cam-ero, Charger SRT8, or Boss 302 Mustang, but the car that kept coming back into my head was an SRT4 Neon. I had one brand new in 05, but it got totaled after 6 months. I've always missed that car, and figured I'd see what was out there, and what my wallet could manage. Welp, long story short: I didn't get an SRT4 Neon, but I found a clean model of it's successor, the SRT4 Caliber. It was close by in Old Bridge, and adult owned, so it wasn't riced out. The owner owns a powder coating business, so along with our deal he is going to powder coat the wheels black for me. The car is black, so I'm on my way to building a "Mad Max, Jr" kinda car. I should be rocking it some time next week, and figure it will make a good daily driver. And I'm looking forward to rice'n, er, I mean playing with it a bit. :)

Thanks, Brain. Yeah, I like the fact that I can use this car as a daily and get 25+ mpg out of it while having fun. And I'm going to have to learn myself how to drive a stick again. lol. Plus I like the styling of the car, it's fugly in a cool way, kinda like me! :)
My buddy had a bone stock one. They're pretty quick. GL and have fun!
hopefully the torque steer isn't as bad on the SRT caliber as it is on the SRT neon

Thanks. Shouldn't be too bad on the t. steer. Plus I'm not a drag racer so I'll be doing everything from a roll. :)

Thanks. The guy had the windows done in "legal" tint, so it looks pretty good. He had them darker at one point, but was getting hassled by Da Law, so he went lighter.

Ironically, the owner remarked on their rarity while I was doing a test drive, and a minute or so later we saw an SRT4 Caliber exactly like his! lol:mrgreen:

Congrats UBG, smart choice. Though I'm not the biggest fan of the Caliber styling, every, and I mean every SRT4 Neon I've looked at was either as much as it was brand new, or beat to hell, and loaded with eBay grade parts. Are the Calibers AWD?

The SRT4 Caliber is FWD. No matter to me though, as this is going to be a Highway Star, not a Dragger. 8-)

The engine package is pretty tight, and I'm thinking your mom prolly didn't beat on it and load it up with el cheapo ricer go fast stuff. So, it would be a fun cruiser. The PTs are quite a bit heavier than the Neon SRT4 so it won't be as quick, but I'd use it as is and have fun.

Hanging out sounds cool, but I dunno about being in a boat...ubg never had really good sea legs! But eh, there are worse things in life than chumming, right? :D

If you look at post 29, I answered you. I don't have the car in my possession yet, it is getting the wheels and intercooler powder coated, and a leaky headlight fixed. I will get picts once the car is in my possession.

Bob-
Intercooler powder coated? It will look cool but doesn't that defeat some of the purpose?

Nah, a thin coat of powder isn't going to hurt anyrhing. I could see if it was too thick on the tubes and restricted airflow, but a lot of OEMs coat their intercoolers right from the factory. It is just like painting a car radiator. Too thick on the paint and there will be airflow issues and overheating. A thin cosmetic coat and all will be well.

It's all about heat transfer, not airflow. Powdercoat will reduce transfer but will look good while doing it!

Should use a speical paint for it, powder coating will hinder the cooling abilities some.

Who cares if it costs a few hp? I don't think he's building a race car. Car guys can get so caught up in chasing the last few %%% that in the big pic don't matter at all. Bob, do what you want!!!!!!

If I lose a few ponies I will just crank up da boost. And anywho, all the intercooled Procharger systems I have dealt with since 1996 have had powder coated intercoolers, so if it works for them it works for me!

Certainly not, it was Chryslers designers that lacked style (Avenger, Caliber, Compass etc :-? ) UB is already improving the Calibers looks with the rims, etc... (Hoping I dodged that one  )

Caliber srt wasn't sooooo bad on looks...wish it came w/awd in a little potent powerhouse like that. Couple of my friends at the srt neon when it first came out..never did get a ride in one but they were quick stats wise....i just couldn't get over the rear rollup windows in the neon's w/only the fronts being power...wtf.
All black srt caliber, p/c'ed rims in black and i'd polish the intercooler myself...tint and your set for a nice daily.

Getting photos out of UBG is like trying to get raw footage of inside North Korea, is very few, and grainy, and takes months for it to leak onto the net.

The place is called GSD, and the address is actually listed as Industrial Drive in Keyport, but ya barely turn off Rt 9, and the owner even called the area Old Bridge. So, I'm sticking with it! :)
