View Full Version : Weather predictions for snoreastercane 2012

Since our predictions are about as accurate as the weather man's, what do you think will happen in the coming days. I think it's gonna be a bust and be just another rainy Monday. Though if the storm hits our town will definitely lose power for a good chunk of time. When Irene hit we lost it for 12 days.
So what's your prediction and what are you doing if anything to prep

I'm out of flashlights, generators, running low on batteries, gas cans, and power inverters.
There was an emergency conference call today talking about a late Sunday shipment of generators and other supplies, but now it's up in the air. Last thing we need after a storm is a bunch of generators returned.

Shop rite by me was out of water, soup and assorted other "emergency" rations.
Good thing the liquor store was devoid of people and full of tasty stuff.
:werd: ^^^
Shop-Rite & Super Wal-Mart was something like... Black Friday today. The Shop-Rite by me was also out of canned goods. Savages. I saw a fluffy woman with nothing but about 2 dozen bags of extra puffed marshmallows in her cart, thats no lie.
I caught the tail end of the hurricane when I was in San Juan PR on Thursday. Nothing spectacular. Then flying above the hurricane... that was pretty cool.

My Mom was saying the same thing, everything was gone at the Shop Rite. Including fresh fruit and veggies....(they're gonna go bad anyway if we lose power....morons), we have some liquor, but no beer, I'm broke enough as it is, so not buying beer just for the storm. Also I filled up the gallon can with 2 stroke oil and gas, so we can cut ourselves out if needed. Filled up the GTA and Outback while I was at it. I was informed by one of the guys pumping gas, that people were literally fighting over the pumps, not long before I got there.....what is wrong with people, its a hurricane, not the apocalypse....

LT1 boat anchor jokes ... even after 15 years they are still funny ....
As for this storm, I'm really thinking the media is just over hyping it. When Irene came through last year, we lost power for a day and that was about it.
people are comparing this to the Halloween storm we had last year and the long widespread power outages many areas had afterwards.
However, this is NOT like that storm in most ways, one being that its not heavy wet snow and 2, the trees last year still had the majority of their leaves and only a few had turned and fallen. Tonight, when the winds come, it'll strip most of the remaining leaves off the trees and then the bare branches wont have as much stress on them, like they would with heavy snow or even like in a summer thunderstorm.
There may be flooding in low lying areas but that's already expected.
at my house i'd say 90% of the leaves are down. if you go up the street though where it's not as windy there's only 60% down. it all depends on where you are and the types of trees you have.
But yea V is right. I cant imagine this storm being nearly as bad as last years. but then again wtf do i know

I think another thing we have in our favor (at least for me) is that the ground is pretty dry. I checked my sump pump well and it was dry, i poured some water in there to make sure the pump was still working. Good thing I checked, the GFCI was tripped  when I checked a little while later the rest of the water that was in there the pump cant get out was gone. I have a high water table where I am, so this is good news for me, a least the ground will be able to hold a lot of the water we are expected to get

From the pics I've seen it's already pretty bad down the shore. Good luck everyone.
Big difference between this and Irene is that the leaves are coming down to clog up storm drains. I remember that being a problem during Floyd. I'm not that worried, family is going to be home with me and the cars I worried about are high and dry.

I'm keeping my eye on it. If I get too worried, I'll cut the straps and wave goodbye to it but I'm hoping it doesn't come to that.
The legs are staked down with 2 foot long metal pegs, and now I have ratchet straps tying the frame of it down to the tow points on the front of the truck and to my warn recovery shackle in the rear hitch. I was mostly concerned with it lifting off the ground, but I don't think that'll happen now.

I work over in Staten Island & while we didn't have off this morning, our office closed shortly after noon. Parts of Staten Island nearest the water were being evacuated, as emergency crews would not be responding to calls if winds exceeded 60mph. NYC is taking things very seriously, a few highways, bridges & tunnels were already closed, or scheduled to close at 2pm. We got out, before getting stuck there.
The ride home to North Jersey wasn't too bad at all. Nearly no one on the roads, and except for a "stiff wind," as V put it, it was very manageable.
I really hope nothing happens to the cars or house.

He and adam attempted to make to my place but i think the scooby doo mobile sucked up some water and they hade to retreat back with adams jeep.
Last i hea4d they were waiting in a parking lot for water level to go down.
Looks like my house survived this last high tide, came within 4 ft or so of dumping down into the crawlspace. Neighbors have a few trees down, may be towing some out of driveways tmmr if the waters recide.

Well, cleaned up a small fraction of the mess. Enough to assess any damage to the house from the tree landing somewhat on it.
Gutters are banged up a bit. Lost 1 shingle that I have, once it stops raining I'll get that back into place.
Couple of small divots in the shingles, not outright holes.
Got off cheap compared to some. The shore area is *devastated*.

I heard about the train cars, Christie said every line has damage and its gonna be a a long time to fix the damage. NYC subways could take 4 days to pump the water out. That's from the time the power is back on.
I need to get my hands on a generator or 2 after this for sure.

I forgot this thread was here. As I posted in the picture thread, I just got back from Toms River with my family. We went to check on our house and our cousins houses and it's sick how bad it is down there. We were unable to get close to our properties but from what we were told and shown by neighbors, all is lost. Houses, boats, jetskis, and everything inside the house and shed. A neighbor said he had 5 feet of water in his house at low tide, so we are expecting the same.
I was only able to get within 5-6 blocks of my house until the water was too deep to continue. My cousin has a neighbor that took pics before they left last night- they had water up to their countertops. Another person told us the water was up to the top of the street signs. My cousin's place is still under 3+ feet of water at 5pm, and what hurts the most is that we just finished remodeling the whole house. We took it all the way down to the floor beams less than a month ago.
Added stuff for you.

Still no power here. Running on generator, but finding gasoline is kinda like a Mad Max experience. A lot of stations have no power, those that do are either out of gas or mobbed. Had to drive about 20 miles to fill two 5 gallon cans.
Things get bad enough I'll be siphoning the gas out of the Camaro.
Tomorrow my goal is to buy a generator. I'm heading north towards Albany and trying my luck along the way.
Up here in norther Bergen Co, Rockland Electric said 10 days to restore power to the majority and weeks to be back to what it was prior.

thats part of my point though..they'll tell you 10 days or something outrageous and it realistically could be 6.5. they told people last storm 3 days, and it ended up being 6.5 so they were upset customers. if they hadnt said 3 days last year and said 10 instead and had it fixed in 6.5 people wouldnt be as pissed off.

Got an update from my family and next door neighbor (Sayreville police officer) this afternoon. As far as my place is concerned, we had 2 trees take out the fence, the roof of the shed is gone, and the plastic patio table that we placed on the side of the house ended up 15ft up my neighbor's tree, Thankfully the Camaro made it out with out any real damage. The bay got as close as the house behind mine's front yard so I really lucked out. According to my neighbor, he was teamed up with the state police and National Guard all night rescuing family's from houses in Old Bridge, Sayreville, Keyport, and South River that were trapped. Also a 12 story building in Keyport collapsed during the middle of the night last night. Thats really all I know so far that I haven't seem anyone else post in here already...
