I just went through this, it all depends on your driving record. I have had Esurance for 2 years. I just got my wife into a new lease and the price went up a little, as it should with a new vehicle, so just out of curiosity I got quotes from about 6 different companies just to make sure I wasn't getting ripped off(any more than we already are!) and Esurance was still the cheapest. If you have a very clean record, I'm not sure how it works but I hear New Jersey Manufacturers Insurance is the cheapest.

It is the cheapest but they won't insure you unless you are a state government employee or an immediate family is insured by NJM.

I figured there had to be a catch!

I have njm and they are the best..plus at the end of the year we get a dividend:)...they can do this b/c they only insure folks w/good driving records thus less payouts. You need to work for a co that sponsors them or have a family member who has them. You can try New Jersey Re-Manufacturers though..they are an offshoot.....i had to go w/them before njm took me.

NJM quoted me a thousand more a year than the company I am currently with. Definitely not the cheapest!

Just thought I'd chime in, I have my daily driver and the GTA (the 84 isn't insured at the moment...for obvious reasons) and with those two cars on Allstate its 110 a month. Record is clean and has been since I got my permit at 16 and I'm 26 now. If that seems cheap, its because its the base liability only insurance. My Subaru isn't worth enough to have collision and the GTA well...I'm betting they'll say the same.

Wow, Im surprised geico was that much lower than NJM. I got NJM and have gotten quotes from other companies that were always more expensive. Never got a quote from geico tho

Progressive was the cheapest for me. I have no points and took the defensive drivers course online. It was a boring course but well worth the money I saved.

Also always have to compare the same coverage vs costs w/these companies. One may be cheaper but deductible could be way higher or liability differs.

^^^matters. if one company is quoting you based on 15000/30000 state minimum vs another company stating you on say 100,000/300,000 limits of liability, that is apples to oranges.

liability = you hit someone. not damage to your car, etc.
15000 = $15,000 per incident limit. incident = accident, wether you hit one car or 5
30000 = $30,000 policy aggregate. meanign for the term of your policy - effective date to expirati0on date - your payout is capped at $30,000.

$15,000 does not cover wiping out my cruze ltz let alone a nice car. IMO 15/30 you re 'under insured"

We've had Geico for 7 years, cheapeast rates out of every insurance company, even NJM.....all quotes were for same coverage 100,000/300,000 and a $500 deductible

Another thing to keep in mind is that your credit rating affects your insurance price. It's ******** that they're allowed to do it, but it does.

^^not at all companies. but yeah I can see where your ability to pay should matter because of state mandated cancellation time lines. I don't know NJ car laws, but as example they might require 30 day notice of cancellation. that's 30 free days of coverage. Then you get into the concept of moral hazard.

The_Bishop

I understand that, but if you're paying the policy in full up front, your credit rating shouldn't matter. Not all look at your credit rating, but I'd say at least 80% do. I'm currently with State Farm for auto and home.

agreed. in general I think loans, insurance, etc., have lost any ability for individual review. it's all very mechanical now.

The mininum coverage in NJ is 15/30/5.
15k bodily injury per person
30k total bodily indury per accident
5k property dammage

Anyone that has minimum coverage is a dummy. Those limits barely cover the most basic of accidents. Anything above that comes out of your pocket!

I forgot to mention i have the home and cars insured w/njm, so there is a discount for that. Further, where you live has a huge basis on your quotes too.....you live in newark your rate may be higher due to the probability your car may have a claim against it. I even lowered my premium by telling them i drive 3 miles to the bus station over 5 miles..yes, every little bit matters....cars in garage vrs driveway or street = more $..parked in a parking garage at work could benefit you..all questions were asked when i got my policy as well as duration of work (m-f)..more hrs/mileage your on the road= greater probability a possible claim could occur...its all about dollars and cents or as they said in training day 'smiles and cries'.
