I figured I'd start a thread for pics of this years "perfect storm"

Obviously nothing much has occurred just yet... but only time will tell.
If it does get intense, It would be interesting to see how different parts of the state were affected.

As for rules about posting a picture.. PLEASE include the name of the town where the picture was taken. And preferably only pictures you, or a close friend/family member took. Otherwise if its all media pictures, there's nothing special about it(plus then copyright issues etc)

PS: Lets keep this on topic with a small amoutn of discussion and i'll ask mods to delete any stupid or pointless posts.

ALSO, NO INSTAGRAM PICTURES!!! They are very annoying and do not make you a professional photographer..

Mods: Please delete any posts of stupidity or Instagram pics. Thank you.

x2... the damage caused by this storm is going to effect all of us living here in NJ even if not effected directly. Nothing funny about the entire shore community getting wiped out...

This is a headache. The two trees you see right behind that root ball from another blowdown are leaning across my neighbor's private drive. This is *not* going to be fun or cheap, and the money is all coming out of the 'build a garage' fund.

I'm up at Rutgers and seeing friends and family post pictures online is seriously depressing, I've lived down there for 15 years and don't even want to travel down there right now. My brother-in law lost his house and a couple of friends lost theirs too.

My family was very lucky through all of this and we suffered no serious losses. We are still under generator power and are just going day by day. Internet is slow so little by little I am getting photos up. Bay Head and South is just a war zone. National Guard is checking id's and there are still dealing with gas leaks and severe infrastructure damage throughout the towns. Homes are gone as well as some of the residents. It will never be the same in those towns.

I was in Belmar with Taylor till about 730 when the shark river came over our first step and the garage began filling along with the basement. We took my jeep and his tbss to oceanport seeking refuge at his parents' home. Along the way, we encountered high winds, downed trees, no power, skies lit by transformers blowing, and insane water crossings. The tbss fell victim to one but Taylor says its up and running again, thank goodness. We couldn't make it to his parents' so we turned around and stayed in kmart's parking lot in Wall till about 2 am. We headed back to the house and the water was gone from the street. Slept there and then I have been at my parents' home in Brick since.

I personally didn't see it but there's definitely debris lines that would lead me to believe yes. That is the lowest area for the train tracks which stopped the water at the other streets. I was going to go into Mantaloking today but didn't have the heart to yet.

Adam I don't know how close you will be able to get as far as man to looking is concerned. I know its one of the hardest hit areas on the island. Also I have a lot of good memories on the beaches in the mantoloking section. It really does make me so sad to see what's left of that area. I still cannot believe that there is a whole section of land just gone. Sandy was one angry powerful bitch

I help out with the police towing in the beach, bay head, and mantaloking and my boss had a couple calls in mantaloking already. I know I can get around there a little bit but I just don't know if I want to see it in person yet. They were hit hard along with every town south.

I didn't go up there but I had looked that way and it appeared ok. I'm sure water and sand got up that way but the boardwalk was intact so I assumed all was ok. I actually rented at 9 vetrini lane, house right behind the one you are talking about.

ill try to get a few pics me and my girl took of a few areas and marinas in brick... Tuesday afternoon we were talking in waist deep water to go and inspect the damage at her sisters house (which is located on a lagoon) that faired pretty well with minimal damage. They were very lucky. many on their street not so much. try and get these pics up tonight or tomorrow... others are of Wherlan brothers marina in brick off princton ave... what a mess they have on their hands there. Again my girls fathers boat which was dry docked came within 3 inches of slipping off its blocks but again very lucky its still there with minimal damage...

I made the trip down to Union Beach on Saturday morning and, along with some alma mater, helped an old college buddy & his family with their post-Sandy needs.

Union Beach was wrecked; I didn't snap many pictures, but here are two of a townhouse on the water that completely collapsed:

Insane guys. I've been through Point Beach, Bay Head, and looked towards Mantaloking for work related reasons. Its pretty emotional seeing all of the belongings on the sides of the roads. I don't want to take photos, I feel too bad for the people who suffered far worse than I did. National Guard is still checking id's in Bay Head and there are a couple check points towards Mantaloking. If you aren't supposed to be there, you aren't allowed there. The amount of destruction is hard to comprehend. So many oceanfront homes are gone. Others are deemed unlivable. I just wanted to share with anyone who cares to read and just shed some light on how serious it was down here and further south like Matt and Mike posted. Hope it makes you take a moment to appreciate all that you have and how it can be gone in an instant. The aftermath has definitely hit a spot in me.

yea man besides few places in brick.. havent seen any of the actual oceanfront towns yet. But i feel the same about it... its like this eery feeling that the jersey shore just isnt there any more and many people are without homes and belongings and lost boats and such... my bro went on a party boat today fishing and seen the inlet and ocean from a different POV than most... said there was **** floating in ocean 30 miles out and inlet and surrounding areas just look like war zones

Insurance companies will have to ****ing deal with paying out. God knows how much people pay them for this very reason, so as far as I see it only insurance companies will be hurting.

Otherwise, think of all the money now flowing to contractors, demo guys, clean up guys, police, fireman, utilities guys etc.. and then when people have rebuilt homes, they gotta get furniture, so that should give some influx to local businesses.

Marinas will be swamped with doing insurance boat repairs etc. Same with you guys at auto shops dealing with insurance claims on water damaged cars.

Just trying to look at positive side here. My uncle lost his whole first floor, and on one of his few hours away from running the mess, the VP of the FOP showed up and a bunch of FOP guys demo-d his first floor for him. A lot of awesome-ness has been shown lately.

As far as a jump start to construction, yea. That will be good all around. Those guys have been hurting for a long time; at least that's a little silver lining.

My parents got back from their place in Seaside Park just a little while ago. They are towards the center of the island, and while their crawlspace filled with water, it only wet 2" of the main girder and did not touch the floor joists or insulation... by 2"... huge bullet dodged.

They also had nothing but extremely positive things to say about the way the Seaside Park PD handled the entire situation. Very helpful, very professional, and very respectful of everyone who was touched by the storm.

For all of us the jersey shore is a main stay in our lives year in and year out. A lot of us live here and spend a lot of our summer days here. Others visit. Bring their families and have great times. I have many many many fond memories on the shore. Both point pleasant and seaside. Those memories of what happened to me and what these places looked like will never fade. The shore will be rebuilt and we will enjoy these towns again. It will take time but, and I never thought I'd say this, we are all "jersey strong". Long live the shore and the JSFBOA!!

i know man... i dont think there is anyone that can predict what next summer will be like... will beaches be back to being useable? will marinas be back to normal? will people that lost boats by new boats? will there be a larger boating community now that beaches are wiped out? i mean these are all questions that i have for next summer that IMO cant be answered untill we see how welll they do with the clean up... and then with that said what will tourism be like without all the attractions that were once there. Everyone likes to hate on bennies... but like you said the summer traffic brings alot of money to this area and revenue that helps keep the shores decent... just going to be a wait and see type of thing i guess. for me personaly im a little concerned about the water ways... like are the channels all messed up and im sure there is tons of **** on the bottom of the bay waiting to rip outdrives apart. (not really an important concern) but thats what im thinking about for next summer cause im not a beach person and dont have property on the shore.. boating is what we do in summer..

From what I heard, flood insurance pays $250,000 max and FEMA pays $31,000 max! So, thats $281,000 total. I know that wouldn't cover a total loss on my inlaws house. I'm thinking there will be a lot of people not made whole.

Not to mention the 10% deductable that alot of flood insurance policys have. That 10% can be a BIG number.

IMO, based on everything I've seen and read, it will not ever be back to the way it was pre-storm. Especially because some of the business owners were looking to get a fresh start and a different demographic. Plus there will be some vacant lots that will take years to build back up.

But maybe in 2-3 years or so things will be flowing as normal. I really hope so.

oh man, its so hard to look at. Our vacation home in manahawkin was destroyed. a small A frame, it was knocked off the pilings and gutted from water. I have a knot in my stomach from that. I cant imagine what people are going through losing homes that they live in! I hope everything works out for those people and anyone that had damage from the storm on here.

Yup, I've seen Michigan, Louisianna, and Mississippi State Police along with the National Guard. In the photo above the Newark Police Mobile Precinct, there are two small street sweepers from some police department but I couldn't catch the name. Its basically a construction zone down there and nearly unrecognizable in some areas. They were driving in those huge steel bulkheads (don't know proper name) down by the bridge where the inlet formed. Lyman Street was the other inlet where you see the large drop off in the highway and the access road to the side. The house at the end of the street was originally on the beach front corner IIRC and now sits in the bay. So many homes are gone or destroyed beyond repair. I can't imagine what sits in the bay now with how much water came through to do the damage it did. I know Ortley was hit hard like this as well, I can't imagine what it looks like. I can only hope the towns recover and people return.

Anti_Rice_Guy

There isn't as much stuff in the bay as you would believe, so most of it has been sucked out through the inlet(s) already. There are some things in the water, but even up by Mantoloking/Ortley there isn't that much stuff in the water at all.

I have the other angle of this image below from the water this past weekend, along with some others that I'll be posting up tonight or tomorrow.

P.S. pilings are the upright wood poles for the bulkhead.

sweetbmxrider
11-13-2012, 12:49 PM
Yeah but I'm talking about the metal they use for the bulkheads in the canal that goes down 50 or so feet. I would imagine lots of debris is under the water. We have a customer who owns Beaton Marina and they have had lots of stuff wash up to their bulkhead, they just push it back out. I can see most of the floating debris is gone though.

I went out with a couple friends to check out the damage and try to clean up the bay a bit by grabbing what we could, or putting it on shore. We launched in Waretown, and headed up along the mainland to Mantoloking and cut over to the barrier island side, and came along south until the inlet. The mainland was not hit nearly as hard, and the main damage was to the older, lower lying areas with low bulkheads or to bayfront property. The damage on the barrier island side was much more localized, with most of Seaside Park and other areas flooded but not completely destroyed like areas of Ortley and Mantoloking (this is from a bay point of view, not along the ocean).

If you look, you can recognize a lot of the pictures that Adam has posted in mine, just from another angle. The entire album (waterproof camera means nowhere near the quality of Adam's pictures) can be found here http://s6.beta.photobucket.com/user/nrfania/library/shore/Sandy%20at%20the%20Shore

Thanks for sharing Nick. I was wondering how the house in the middle of the bay made out. I can't believe its still there.

There was FEMA or State Police, or some uniformed people walking around the house when we went by. I've never seen people there.

The shack is gone, 25 years of wondering when it would be torn down, and its finally gone. Weird.

I've been wondering about going down and helping with clean up. Wasn't sure if there was any real method of going about it. I am certainly open to volunteering a bit at the shore, however its so bad in some places I just figure I'd be getting in the way.

Yeah I know they do. With is just crazy if it was just enough to dampen the carpet. But 2 feet up on a vette and its to the seats.

That's a shame. Just curious. Did you father-in-law buy it new or used? My FIL had the exact model, same color, etc and put almost no miles on the thing when he had it on lease. Would be interesting/sad if it was the same car. He took such good care of it.

Maybe you wouldn't, but I guarantee you these parts among thousands of others hit the used part market. Those prices are going to come down a little and scrap is going to hit rock bottom. A good portion of complete cars will be boxed up and shipped around the world as well.

The water is at the bottom of the pan, I believe you know that. It may only be a trickle in there but if its salt water, no thanks. Had some sitting in a throttle body and it did a number on it. The problem with the water in the interior is it getting into the airbag circuit. Many stories are coming to light of people driving down the road and then the bags are deploying. Much cheaper to total a car than what could come of an airbag deployment. On the note of water in a car, Circle Dodge in Brick had 300 cars on the lot. The 2013's have a sensor down in the floor to detect water in the event of the car entering water, like if you drove off the road into a river, the windows go down. They are set up like air bags so they work even if the key is off. The cars flooded and the windows went down in the middle of the storm. All of the cars were totaled.

Yeah I'm just saying in general as some people aren't really sure. Just trying to pass info along as I get it. Train came down the tracks for the first time since sandy. They are just testing and checking the rails and what have you though.

The wife & I have been thinking about purchasing a newer used crossover for her. Now that we are sure to see a wave of Sandy cars come into the market, we are probably going to hold off for a while.

I considered buying it back, but I would have to replace the carpets, seats and wires that were corroded. Then try to get all the salt out of all the crevices and combat the rust. Its just too big of a project to do in my parking garage. It started up a couple days after Sandy, but now the starter seized up from the saltwater. Insurance gave me a lot more than I expected for it, so it makes it a little easier to part with.
