A couple quick brake questions.

I did front brakes on my 99 but when I did the passenger side the bolts were frozen and snapped. I Got a new bracket and thought the guide pins were part of the bracket, and obviously they aren't, I wanna order them but they seem to not come with the rubber grommet. Is that a big deal? Is 70 ft LBS The right spec for the calipers? I cant find anything on the brackets though anyone have the spec?

Final question, I also have rotors and pads for the rear but I heard I need to adjust the parking brake to install them, what tools do I need to do this?

I tried google, and the ls1tech search/brake stickies and they are pretty much useless.

The caliper bracket bolts are 74 ft lbs
Guide pins 23 ft lb on the front and 27 on the rear

Just changing the rotors and pads you will not be messing with the parking brake on the rear backing plates unless you want to readjust the tension on the parking brake
Then there is a pin wheel on the inside of each backing plate

You can get a whole caliper with brackets pins and bolts for 100$

But to adjust the parking brake all you need is a screw driver. But it isn't required to be adjusted to fit the rotor.

I had a hell of a time explaining the part to stores. I ordered from rock auto even though they kill me on shipping price and times. I guess I can wait another week to drive the car...

I ordered the bracket already thinking that the pins were part of the bracket, I only spent $17 on the bracket so I guess I'm making out like a bandit.. It just sucks I'm dumping all this money into a car I'm trying to get rid of.

Rarely do I ever find parts cheaper than Rock even when you add the shipping costs in.that is,EXACT parts compared not counting no name POS off ebay. And mail order is mail order, you cant have cheap, fast AND reliable

Rockauto is great but a problem I frequently run into is when I order multiple items they all come from different places. This means sometimes I'm paying double or triple the shipping price and I'll have one part in but I will be waiting for my other parts to trickle in.

The reason it's gonna take so long is they shipped USPS. I could've had them over-nighted but I'd rather wait a week since I have a working DD and its not like I need my car to get to school or work then pay $50 for a rubber gromet.

Advance auto in Edison have the boots in stock. Should have looked around before ordering them!

the take away here is inspect, then buy parts, then do the job. then you find out the issues and have all the parts in hand before you start.

I needed more than the boots. It's whatever, I could've gotten everything from a part store around the corner but I didn't want to order a whole kit just for the boot.. I also never heard of the company that made the pin they wanted me to order. I got acdelco replacements so I actually know what the company is.

to add...when doing calipers on these (now old) cars get the calipers that come with brackets - and the lifetime warranty. it's the best way in the long run.

I just have a quick question again.. I finally got my boots in and went to wrap up the passenger side. Are the pins supposed to be pressed into the bracket? The pins wiggle out of the bracket very easily(when not bolted up), and even when the whole thing is bolted up the whole caliper wiggles slightly.

I really cant figure this out and honestly doesn't seem safe.

The long pins should be lubed and the caliper slides on them to compensate for pad wear

You may have to run an oversized pin if you have significant bore wear.

It's a brand new Pin and brand new bracket, I lubed them, and got them pretty tight but my torque wrench is too long to fit in the well. If the caliper is allowed to move slightly I think it's fine. If not I'll take the bracket somewhere and have them look at it and get a better pin.

Where did you get the mount and pin from? If the mount was made in china but the pin is usa, you have a standard pin going into a metric mount so there will be excessive play.

The bracket is a-1 cardone and pins are Acdelco.

Yeah a-1 cardone are made overseas while acdelco is America.

Nah. I'm gonna take my stock bracket to my grandpas, that old fart will have something up his sleeve to get the pin(and broken bolt) out so I can just use the AC pins.

If that doesn't work cts v brakes?

Just an update. We couldn't get the pin out of the stock bracket. I ordered a set of calipers and brackets off eBay for $40 and I swapped the bracket today. It worked out perfectly, looks safe to drive, I just need some brake clean and to paint the bracket(it's silver) and ill be testing my new brake pads and rotors.

Cardone caliper brackets are remaned, not "made in China"

If you are replacing a caliper, sometimes it's nice to spend a little bit more money on a caliper with bracket. If you are replacing pads and run into a busted bolt in a caliper bracket, it makes very little sense to buy a whole caliper.

Sounds like who ever did the brakes on the car prior did not lube up the pins.

I'm pretty sure no one ever did brakes on this car before I got it. It's okay though, already done, and if I can make the bracket work with new pins, or get the pin out of the stock bracket, I can do a brake swap to my 84. It stops so much better and the brakemotive rotors look sick. I just need some time to do rears.
