Well I found a cast iron LQ9 6.0 block finally ! !
So far what I have gathered is a
-6.0l LQ9 gen III 400$
-4.030" wisco forged -3.2cc pistons 700$
-callies compstar "I" beam 6.125" rods 700$
-ARP mainstuds 234 5608 215$
-Machine work and assembly 1273.16
Totaling 3288.16
Going with a TSP Magic stick 4 239/242 .649"/.609" Camshaft
Heads will be ordered next week. Going to bring down the budget a little and go with PRC 5.3 heads at 62CC along with cometic .040" head gaskets.
Rockers will get the trunion upgrade
Intake will stay with the LS6 for the time being since my original schedule got bumper up by 6 months
Any advice or suggestions are welcome. Extremely excited to do this build
Also what do you guys think an LS1 with no covers /w 243's, tsp torquer v2 cam should be worth from complete?
Trying to weigh my options if its worth selling as a whole or not.

Glad you posted this! It's been tough keeping my mouth shut.
As for selling your current stuff, you'll get a good bit more if you sell everything separately & throw the stock heads/intake/cam back in.
Let the shiny pictures begin!

ill take the stock stuff off your hands... :-D

Go 408 its worth the extra money. I have a 6.0 block in my garage cheap. Its going to take a big cam to get you to 500rwhp plus
MyFirstZ
11-12-2012, 07:40 PM
Wish I asked you before I drove out to Amish country. Haha
I just saw that the stroker 408 kit uses the same length rods that I have. Is that right? If thats the case then all I need is a new crank? Eagle is obviously the cheapest but for a street car you think its good enough ?
Also wanted to ask you Charlie what you recommend as far as fuel (injectors/pump) and brand of bearing ?

thoes rods are fine my buddy ran thoes in his 454 lsx made 580rwhp threw an auto and sprayed it with 300... They held up fine
MyFirstZ
11-12-2012, 08:01 PM
Yeah I was told they can take some power. So basically I just need 4.00 stroke crank?
I honestly thought the 408 used a longer rod but I guess not. May have to make this work now. haha
Is your machinist local up there ?

FWIW I have heard from a few machinists that Eagle stuff sometimes ends up costing more due to the amount of re-work that needs to be done, and you are left with a substandard part after all that.

May have to go with the callies in that case for a few hundred more. Thanks for that

The eagle Ls cranks are no joke... I no of a 440lsx That went 8.23s on 2 kits with a total of 600hp worth of N2o. The motor had an eagle crank. They actually split the block in half and the crank survived it.

Well that is going to end up being the next purchase before machine work. I'll do some research and see what I can get my hands on
The 408ci open alot more doors for heads and cam possibilities.

I thought the 408 used a 4.030" bore
4.030" bore X 4.00" stroke
As i just found out last night using 6.125" rods as well
BarneyMobile
11-13-2012, 09:19 AM
Like Featherburner said, you'll be needing new pistons if you go with bigger crank. you can keep the rods. Its not about the bore size rather the placement of the wrist pin in piston. A longer stroke will require the wrist pin to be moved closer to top of the piston, other wise if you kept the same pistons for the 370 build, they would come up and out of the bore. The piston has to be selected based on rod lenght and crank throw.
MyFirstZ
11-13-2012, 11:58 AM
Had no idea about that ! Appreciate it
I'll end up just keeping it at a 370 and spending the extra coin on head work and intake

Not as familiar with the LS line for Eagle but I never had any problems with Eagle. The crank that was in my Nova was in the 10's its entire life with about 700 passes on it and never failed. Not saying its better than other brands but they work.

Going to the machine shop tomorrow to talk about a date to drop it off as soon as the main studs come in. .. . . .
Side jobs are coming in steadily so I have gathered the funds for machining and studs. Going tommorrow to talk about a date for drop off.

Heads will be 243 casting. Haven't decided if I will send my current heads out to TEA or AI or buy new which is going to cost a pretty penny.
If you already own the 243's then have them ported by TEA
If you need to buy the castings 1st then just buy a set of T/F "AS CAST" heads from TEA and have them milled for your Combustion Chamber size you prefer. They would be your best bang for the buck. Good Luck with your build.

In your original post you were considering 243's ported by either TEA or AI.
Short version.....TEA is a proven product weather it's a stock casting or a Trick Flow.
AI is a company trying to sell themselves with alleged flow #'s and dyno #'s on the Internet. There isn't any track results from them worth speaking of.
Brian Tooley is the original owner of TEA and the port designer of the Trick Flow heads as well. He is retired and now has his new business called Brian Tooley Racing. A smarter man will be hard to find. Like I said, give him a call. You won't be disappointed.
BTW....Although he doesn't advertise on his web page, He's back to building engines again.

Can you post up the price of the machine work when you're done? I'm debating building a motor or just buying one since LM has 408 shortblocks for pretty cheap.
MyFirstZ
12-25-2012, 10:03 AM
Going to be about 1000 for the machine work. He quoted me before I left.
That's for the cleaning, new cam, rod, main bearings, bore/hone, checking the block polishing crank, filing of piston rings and complete assembly.
Includes the price of new main and rod bearings that he will be getting for me
I'll be just under 3000 for a full short block
May be a few things I missed
Who's LM? Livernois?
WayFast84
12-25-2012, 08:41 PM
Yeah, I don't know how much shipping would be but they want $3500 for a 408 with a new block.
3k is a decent price I assume for a 370?
MyFirstZ
12-25-2012, 09:11 PM
Shipping I'm pretty sure is another 200$ being freight though I don't believe they will deliver residential and then tax on 3500$. Probably looking closer to 4k
Its putting a little extra in my pocket and I don't have to dish out 3500$ in one shot. Since the entire build is being funded by side jobs

Block has finally been picked up from the machine shop
-Crank was cut and polished with new bearings
-Bore and hone .030"
-cam bearing r/r
-cleaning
-file fit ring and assemble
1273.16 w/ tax
So I am sitting at 3.2k for an assemble short block right now and still have alot more to spend to finish it approx 2.7k

What did you decide to do for heads?
MyFirstZ
04-16-2013, 05:52 PM
For the time being I am just going to go with PRC 5.3's then while I have my heads off I probably will have them sent out and done by TEA, depending on how the car runs and feels with those heads.
Like I said my entire schedule was bumper up by 6 months since I need to get this done before I move so it put some strain on me financially to do it all of a sudden.
We shall see what comes in the long run once its tuned
KirkEvil
04-16-2013, 09:28 PM
I recommend you call TEA and get a quote. I supplied them my 243 heads and assembled the valve train myself making the total cost considerably less. With that said, I forget what valve springs you have with your current setup which may not like a MS3. They also had the heads back at my door 10 days after sending them out!
MyFirstZ
04-17-2013, 08:13 AM
Have the PRC gold .650" duals right now with the v2, but I'm getting new.
Trying to minimize down time since the work won't be done at my house. Have less then three days to do it
If I can convince my buddy to let me send them out and have that down time at his place then I will probably do the stage 2 on the heads I have.

Not to thread jack, just throwing in what im doing. i have an LQ4 that i am making a 408 out of.
Using Weisco -3cc flat tops, Eagle forged H beams, and an Eagle forged crank.
Im using l92 heads with a little bit of work and a stock LS3 intake
I had Pat G spec me a cam and EPS is grinding it (236/242 .623"/.623" 114+2 LSA)
Looking for 500whp through a t-56.

That is the signal wire from the ignition. When you turn the key power is sent through it which then connects battery power to the starter motor internally through the solenoid. The large post is your constant battery hot and you should see another large post on the solenoid with a wire going into the starter motor.
yea, and I think they are 9mm, weird crap.

Sadly the rear bumper got scratched from hitting something while going up and down on the lift that wasn't seen. Gonna see what I can do about touching it up but it may have to get it redone.
Hopefully it will be tuned tomorrow after work and it will most definitely be tuned at work tomorrow, can't wait to see how it performs

Two things:
1) How bad is the rear bumper scratch? That sucks considering how flawless the front clip was, and how nice the body looked. I wonder if it's actually bad, or if it's just your OCD again...
2) Second thing: Leave the Kia at home Saturday/Sunday. We're gonna get some break-in miles out of the way ;)

Can't really drive to much before the tune. It will stall at every stop
and its bad. The only one that can't be buffed is because paint is missing. Going to take some attention to detail with touch up paint but i think i can get it decent

Well I guess i should give you guys an update.
Car is down at the moment but ran well for 3 days before I started noticing a tick thinking it was either a lifter or some other valvetrain noise.
Started tuning the car but found the injectors were maxed out. 104% duty cycle at 6200 rpms. Not going to cut it.
So I have bosch 42lb/hr injectors, 85mm truck MAF with the adapter wire coming in.
Since we couldnt tune it any further for wide open pulls we decided to call it a night. Brought it to work the following day and found the "tick" was louder then ever. So as soon as I got back home I pulled the valve covers and checked to make sure nothing backed out. Tried spinning the pushrod and everythnig was tight.
Upon further inspection I found a cracked spring on the intake valve I believe on the second to last cylinder on the right (passenger side). Not sure what the order is on our motors
Contacted TSP and was immediately contacted back. Based on the mileage they suggested I just replace the one valve spring. (if anymore break I will demand a new set or refund and put it towards brian tooley dual springs)
Also was prompt to recheck pushrod length even though they suggested the 7.4 based on the specs of the build. gasket thickness, lifters, heads and cam which were all purchased through them same order.
So tomorrow when i get back form vacation I can check for the correct length.....
At zero lash it took 1.5 turns to torque to 22 ft lbs. They insisted this was infact to much prelaod on the lifter and i should be no more then 1 turn. Thought this was weird based on everything I read.

Man that sucks. Glad you were able to find the issue though. I won't be around when you bring it back to finish the tune but I'm glad I was able to see/ride in it the first go around. The whole build from the paint to the interior to the suspension came out great

Tapping noise si finally gone and allowed me to blow some more money.
Still waiting on the new throttle cable to eliminate traction control. Tuning will be done on Saturday. Couldn't finish last time since at WOT the injectors were maxing out
The billet throttle is absolutely gorgeous and comes in a nice blown plastic case similar to handguns

The non traction control cable part number ?
I bought it off tick performances website with the intake and throttle.
Paul I have very little stock parts as far as engine.
I have mainly the old suspension really.
the only left overs of any value to me is the maf, injectors, lid, pushrods and intake/ tb

Thanks !
PRC .675 duals, came assembled on the heads
I wanted to change the whole set but they seem to be fine now. I'll keep an eye on them every so often.
When I do the coil relocation it will be a matter of seconds to get the valve cover off and inspect.

Removed the second air system, it was deactivated and the new FTP lid isn't going to be and isn't cut for it.
Removed the traction control since I put the direct cable. Seems a little snappier. Maybe there was some unwanted slack or just because of pure length to the TC motor.
Removed cruise control since that hasn't worked in 50k
Still a lot of cleaning to do in there. Thinking about buying another harness and putting all new connectors and taking out what Isn't used anymore. May gut the glove box and move the PCM into there. A lot of ideas going through my head to make it nice

after a day of tuning a new pump is required and truck alternator and long term some 3.90s
otherwise the car has amazing driveability and pulls hard and still has more left in it.

So after a long saturday we put in the new racetronix fuel pump with hotwire kit and extra ground strap.
Wasn't a terrible install once we got everything out of the way but it was still something I don't want to do again anytime soon.

While going together I put in this little beauty I picked up the week before, a slightly used moser 12 bolt with 3.9x gears with a truetrac with welded LCA relocation brackets. This rear woke the car right up and did exactly what I needed it to.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f31/myfirstcamaro/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140510_191534_129_zpsed632856.jpg (http://s44.photobucket.com/user/myfirstcamaro/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140510_191534_129_zpsed632856.jpg.html)
After that we finished everything up by installing the higher output truck alternator.
Finally ready for the final tune, some dyno numbers and some track time

Off topic: Please explain your shop floors, are those bricks?! Or just floor that's made to look like brick. I've never seen or worked in a shop with that kind of flooring, I'm intrigued haha.

Doing the final tune the 28th this month.
It is a BMW thing that they made all dealers do years ago. Its called clinker tile. All I know is it is super hard and I think 9$ a square foot.

Who did the motor and tune?
Gothcha, looks good. Just took me off guard. I'm assuming it's slip resistant, looks like it'd be slick when you spill fluid. Germans; always gotta be different.

Complete opposite of slip resistant. Incredibly dangerous lol
The machine work was done by a shop in Pearl River. I did the assembly and install. Tune was done by a member here. Xrelapse or something like that.
