View Full Version : Contemplating removing ground effects

Like it says I have been thinking about removing the ground effects
The car was hit by some road debri and destroyed the front bumper and one rocker panel. I already was cut the check from insurance and waiting till the 7th before it goes into the shop.
I just haven't decided if I want to remove the rest of the kit.
For those that have done it anyone have a close up of the rocker after removal.
What do you guys think. I do like the clean look of the no gfx.
Cost I'm hoping it would be the same as repair and repainting a used rocker and front gfx

I'd leave 'em. It ain't like they are some cheap looking ricer mod. They go well with the lines of the car and look pretty tough.

Could not have said it better myself. Keep em.

Totally keep them. Don't make it to look like a 6cylinder model as the 4th gens weren't too indistinguishable from each other. Yours looks unique and nice..worth fixing it.

If it puts money in your pocket, that certainly would help with the car payments :)

Live without it for a bit & make up your own mind after a couple months/if the missing GFX piece you're looking for becomes available.

That s actually a good compromise

i agree. you could take them off and live with out them for a few months (as long as you dont mind the holes in the panels) and if you dont like it you could put them back on. i honestly think you'd have a beautiful camaro either way.

Did it ever occur to you the piece of metal was on 287 sending you a message? In all cases not, but possibly a change could be in order. Lose the GFX step up to the plate and spend some of that nut in your pocket on a CME and rear valance, but have the valence blended into the bumper so it looks like it should have been made, all one piece. Followed buy polishing the edge of the tips till they look like chrome, to compliment the lip on your wheels. IMO the finished height of the bumper just looks too high off the ground compared to the level of the rockers, the rear valence makes the side profile flow alot better. Also if its not done already fill in your berger panel with some filler and a fresh coat of SEM Bumper coat paint and enjoy. Do you really need " CAMARO " blazed across the back of your car at this point?

.... spend some of that nut in your pocket on a CME...... fill in your berger panel ........
I must be the only person that doesn't like the look of a CME...
And its a tail panel!

It's different, and goes with the car. I say keep it. You obviously liked how it looks.

I know I, for one, don't like the CME and wouldn't get it if I won the lottery. Besides, it's the internet - everyone's a millionaire.

I say ditch them but as others have said, if you like them then that's all that matters. They look a bit tacked on in the front and would better smoothly integrated into the front bumper cover.
Edit: I do love the CME though.

My whole reason behind this was I've had the car 4 years with no change to the outside and half of the kit will be removed during body work anyway
Thought maybe its time for a change

I like the idea of removing them for the time being, just to see how you like it. If you use small black rubber plugs in the rocker panel holes to keep dirt/debris out, you wouldn't even notice them from more than a foot away since it's low, and already black. Doesn't cost you a dime to try it!

Just look at every other black 4th gen w/out ground fx's and you'll get the picture.
I always dug the cme on the 4th gens...thats why i made my exhaust exit out the middle of the 3rd gen...however it needs the side ground fx's imo to bring it all together.

Another vote for no GFX. I certainly don't think they look ricerish or anything, but I've never been a fan of the GFX on these cars.

Great idea Steve!

I for one am not a fan of the ground effects, I don't think the flow properly with the car. Less to worry about. I second a CME.

Keep em. Just fix em. Looks entirely better imho. Look at my Formula. It has ground effects. I'd never remove them, now that they're there. Once you get em, you gotta keep em.

I dont think the factory gfx would be that bad if the front gfx didnt look like an afterthought just tacked on the front.

The firebird/ta gfx flow much better with the lines of the car then the camaro gfx. The camaro ones almost look like big fangs or something.

I'm not a fan of Camaro GFX in pictures, but in person, they're not as dramatic as photography leads on. They're actually not bad, and MyFirstZ's car is tasteful/"clean" enough that it will still look good overall regardless of which direction he chooses to go.
Keep us in the loop. Sorry for not making this decision any easier!

I was leaning towards removal myself hence the thread.
But I'm going to remove the passenger side rocker this week to see how bad the holes and paint might be underneath it before it goes in for body work Monday. As long as it really didn't get damaged by that large piece of road debri, I'll probably remove them and put it in the basement for the season and see how I like it. The CME might wait for other reasons.

Decide if you like the CME or GFX better and go that route. Unfortunately, the stock GFX do not match up with the CME so you cannot have both....ask me how I know.

Lol well Monday I will talk cost with my buddies body shop and see how much I will have for cme
If they mount the same as ta ones the holes are obvious and big. I can take pics if you want

well I dropped the car off today at the shop.
completely not thinking............the non gfx rocker that took some damage will be evaluated and added to the quote to be repaired. I actually forgot about that.
So I have to wait until the adjuster comes down and for a call back before I see what else is going to get done.

definately keep them on. the car looks quite bland without them... they set off the rest of your tasteful appearance mods. like someone else said, it looks far too average without them on.
