View Full Version : Car options for my gf

My gf is going to sell her GTP and is looking for another car. I'm at a loss of what she could look into as her mom and grandparents dictate what cars she can and cant have. Her mom says anything with a V8 is a no go, and manual transmissions are iffy, and her gparents only approve of family hybrids. She wants a cobalt ss like mine but thats a no from both ends. I came up with a list of cars that could be fun/fast and sporty for her. If anyone has cars to add or possibly any cons of the cars I list I'd appreciate the input.
Nissan 350z, Subaru WRX or Legacy GT, Mitsubishi Evo, Mazdaspeed 3, S2000, Mustang 4.0, Charger 3.5, Neon SRT4.
I thought of these cars because some are the 6cyl version of performance cars, or 4 doors. Being that they don't know much about cars the 4 doors may slip under the radar as a slow family sedan.

It sounds like these are your personnel picks that you would love to drive from time to time. Unless she is a gear head like you these aren't good options w/the exception of the subaru and legacy. She sounds young so anything rwd (350z) or higher hp isn't too good of a choice for a young girl (as most young people have lead foots). Also think about insurance rates and if she's on her parents policy that may not last for long w/a few tickets. How much does she have to spend? Is she into suv's/crossovers?..i.e ford escape or mitsu outlander sport (seems like a hip suv). If not, a regular subaru legacy or impreza non turbo may do her just fine.
As w/anything, if she is living under her parents roof they have the final say in what she acquires.....even if she is fitting the bill for the car entirely as they may 'decide' to charge her rent down the line...point is you never know. Think about her being in something safe, reliable (that means not getting something at the top of her price line w/ a ton of miles just to get that sporty car), and to me, good in the snow if the need arises. There is plenty of time to get that cool car down the line when she and you have the ability to weigh out all options and have more $ and buyer power (no outside interference and on your own).

Other than actually doing the work performance wise, she loves fast cars and racing at atco. I know she won't go for an SUV/cross over cause she only likes cars or full size pickups.

She could just buy what she wants, bring it home without telling them. Then they either go thru the agrivation of selling it, possibly for a loss or they can just except it for what it is. Sounds like they aren't very trusting of her. If shes 18 she needs to do what's right for her. Do they think she's going to race every chance she gets in a camaro? They DO make camaros with 6cly. and automatics. People will do what they're gonna do, regardless of the hp. Just ask anyone who has wrapped their parents car around a pole or crashed it. You can drive a ford fiesta to fast and crash that too. Get her a v6 camaro and call it a day.

so why is another cobalt ss not an option but a SRT 4 is?
If a cobalt isn't an option nothing on that list will be

Her age/how long does she plan on keeping the car? That matters a lot.

She's 22 and its not that they don't trust her its her mom listened to her father(gf's grandfather) on what car she needs to have untill she was 45 and now my gfs mom feels its how it should be with her.
so why is another cobalt ss not an option but a SRT 4 is?
Her brother and I both own an SS so her mom knows its fast(ish), but she doesn't know the difference between an srt4 and a neon expresso

A cobalt is an option but only the LS and LT

Shes 22, and she wants to keep it until shes done nursing school which won't be until 2015/16.

Even the '05-'06 sedans are a good option. :) I like my '06 a lot, I bought it almost 2 years ago with 64K and it has 81K on it now. In that time the only repairs I've made were to replace a frozen rear caliper, and change one cam sensor. Other than that, it's just been routine oil changes and a trans fluid change. The G's are pretty DIY friendly.

cobalt ss with the 2.4/auto? or pontiac G5... my gf has an 08 cobalt lt coupe, no issues with it, bought new and now at 54k miles, still has original brake pads :)

Legacy GT or MazdaSpeed 3 are personally what I would drive everyday of the cars listed, leaning more towards the Legacy because I'm a fan of AWD.

I'm gonna run it by her. They are nice cars, and it will satisfy the grandparents since they want her to get a camry hybrid(which won't happen) but they'll like that it has a Toyota engine.

She shouldn't buy a new car if her mom won't let her get the car she actually wants. Why waste all that money for something that is a second or third choice? If her car is about to die and her family pays her insurance it is a completely different story.

Cars not dying but shes had to put alot of money into it and her mom still pays the insurance. If she could afford her own, choice of car would be hers and only hers.

go with the legacy, even the non-turbo models are pretty quick for what they are

Legacy is the best and most solid feel of any Japanese brand.

...yes, the talon was on the rice side but i was 18 when i had it and removed the stickers quickly thereafter....lol. If you go w/a 4g63, beware of 'crankwalk' in the 2nd gen eclipses. As for the is300's, great car, bulletproof bottomend but watch those 5spd trans and clutches. Mine was an 04 5spd and they had a notchy feel and werent too great if beaten on for longivity (i baby'd mine for this reason). After the 1st snow storm though, it sat and i picked up a truck, even w/the 'snow' button and trac control it was horrible in the white stuff.

I figured. In that case she should go for a SHO Taurus or SVT Contour. Her family would definitely approve.

SVT Contour? Youngest one of those is 13 years old!

In that case, subaru impreza or wrx non-turbo....you can get a nice, low mileage one that wasn't beat on for that price.

Why not just buy a newer honda civic. They dont really break and get good mileage too.
