I gotta say, even though I like the sound and I got it for a screaming deal, the more I work with my 3" dual exhaust on the Nova the more I just shake my head at how much it's a PITA and not necessary. The clearance is not that great, I had to heat and hammer the pipes to get it to clear the tires, and it's pretty heavy.
So nut up. What have you guys bought that you wish you hadn't?
Rod ends on the suspension... god dang the car makes so much noise now driving around sounds like its falling apart...

Putting in the 3:73 gears (stock was 3:23) and finding out it ran the same times in the 1/4 mile. Too much low end torque with the stock tires requires I walk it out of the hole, so that unless I use drag radials, I lost too much top end and gas mileage.

The Holley TB I bought was junk...shiny but junk. I was allured by the shine of the unit and red TB blades you would never see but I had the kick the throttle to get it back to idle. The throttle was also overly "tight" with a lack in fluid movement. Thankfully I sold it for close to what I bought it for and moved on to the AS&M unit which I love.

Used pacesetter headers, sight unseen. Idiot move.
Getting a non-TCS rear end also caused a ton of headaches in this current swap. I thought getting a 3.42 3channel for $150 was a great idea. Well, I learned there were some compatibility issues as I went along. $40 for a non-TCS throttle cable, $120 for custom rear brake lines (I upgraded to braided lines as well), and a 3channel ABS block. A whole lot headaches too. $310 later, I realized I should have just found a 4-channel, Traction-Control-Equipped, rear to begin with!

I regret HP Tuners somewhat. Should have gone with EFI Live.
MSD LS1 ignition coils. They lasted maybe 2000 miles then started causing misfire problems. I swapped in a set of used stock coils and all was great after that.

This! Even though at the time I didn't feel this way, looking back I think I had the most fun with the car when it was bolt ons only. Now that I am re-doing everything it is more of a pain in the ass than an enjoyment.
As far as individual parts go, I would have to say my CCI clutch I put in. It was attractive because it was cheap and "supposed" to hold a decent amount of power. Though it worked great when it was only bolt ons, as soon as I launched it with a sticky tire and nitrous it was shot. Didn't even last 1 pass on the spray

Buying used parts usually ended up sucking. Buying bolts that were too long for the engine to bellhousing and only finding out when I tried pulling the trans with the motor in car.

Many come to mind, but one that really rings a bell is the installation of a "foreign made" in tank fuel pump on my first 3rd. Meh no need to check it, its new. Reassemble everything get in to go for a ride it never worked, removed it and installed a second "foreign made" pump. Im hip to this TPI stuff now so nothing can rain on my parade, "Ok before we start to put everything back together for the second time lets turn the key and see if we have fuel", the pump makes noise and fuel shoots out the line! YES, success. Re assembled everything only to find that too was bad. Finally head back to the parts store for the third go round and the owner helps me out this time. "Hey kid why didnt you ask for the Walbro pump the first time, there made in the USA, that pump is a nightmare to change out"
Its lifes little lessons we all learn from

Going the N20 route in my old V6 firebird. I should have done a Turbo on it! N20 3.8<Turbo 3.8.
In my T/A probably the 383 motor. If I could do it over again I would have done a Supercharger and been done with it. Maybe built a forged 347 or something for the boost!

The electric WP and March midmount billet accessory setup I put on my GTA years ago... Looks great, but WAAAAAAY overkill for what I needed. I let looks get the best of me... while it functions great and looks killer, it was a lot of money that could have gone elsewhere on the car. Live and learn, that was 10 years ago, at least any SBC I own will be guaranteed to have a nice clean accessory setup!

I feel the same in hindsight
i regret buying the trailblazer in 06 and not just putting an engine into my old pickup... that huge expense is kind of what forced me financially to stay stock internals on the trans am... which took the fun out of it at its final stages...
if i never bought the tbss, i would have a cool 92 pickup and the t/a would have been closer to the goals... and i probably would have had money in the bank on top of all that

if i had a auto at the time it probly woulda been ok, but with a 6speed and a monster level 6 clutch driving around town was rough, it would pop and click real loud around turns, and load and unload causing the car to drift for a split second kinda scary, so happy its gone, but i still have it, its for a ford 9'' its forsale

I bought the 3" exhaust for the 70 SS396 and ran into the same problem. You would really need a muffler shop to fit the tailpipes properly between the leaf springs and lower quarter panel. I just cut them 67-68 style and it worked fine. I think the 3" headpipes into the mufflers works fine but just take 2-1/2" pipes off the mufflers for better clearance and probably minimal power loss.
