View Full Version : Refinished the deck

It's been a couple years since I last stained the deck. In those two years, the stain gave up. I pressure washed as best I could but short of sanding the whole thing, I figured I would try the Behr Deck Over product I'd seen on TV. The neighbors used it on their deck and it came out great. The stuff goes on thick and you can fill cracks up to a 1/4". Pics below. Final shots show the product still drying but I'm very happy with it. It feels very durable so I hope it holds up like they say.

Did you have a lot of bleeding thru each board on the underside. Just asking as I have a patio below my deck and it would be unsightly if that is the case (I know I can wipe it off, but just inquiring). For the size of your deck, how many gallons was used by chance? thanks.

Thanks guys. Hopefully the rain won't mess anything up today since they recommend a bit more time before rain is supposed to hit it.

The stuff is pretty thick so you shouldn't get much bleed through at all. To be safe, I would certainly cover the patio underneath before you decide to do it. The product dries fast and while I'm sure with enough scrubbing it would come off, it would really be a pain. I wasn't all that careful considering I have dirt below my deck and just grass/dirt around it. I bought a 5 gal bucket and used all but maybe a 1/8 or 1/10th of it. I am going to go back around and use it for touch up for any areas that may need more coverage.

So you went with a solid, huh? Definitely interested to see how it holds up over the next 2 years.

Any further info on the stain? Price per gallon and manufacturer's durability/quality claims?

Good job, Brian. Those railings are tediously!

Good job, Brian. Those railings are tediously!

All of the colors are solid since it's an acrylic resin. They have 54 different shades to choose from. You can read more about it on their website but I read around and most of the reviews were very positive. I worked off of my neighbors experience as well. For 5 gals, it wasn't cheap at $154 but if it lasts longer than the stain, then its well worth it. It supposedly has a limited lifetime warranty so we will see how long it lasts. I knew once I went this route, the deck would need to be treated this way going forward. No way in hell will I be sanding the whole thing to go back to a stain.

For the railings, I used a paint mitt which made quick work getting the first coat down.

Looks good. Wish I never had a deck built. Staining and maintaining is a PITA. I may go this route.
