Okay, so some of you know I paid off and sold my 09 Malibu.
I paid it off around Thanksgiving, received a letter from Ally saying "congrats!" and then waited...
and waited...
and waited...
And now it's 2014 and no title. I called Ally to find out where it is, and it was sent to the wrong address. I asked if they ever received it back, and they didn't. I asked if they could please send me another one as I shouldn't have to pay for another one since they goofed, and they said they are going to send me a Release of Lien and that will be just as good (Insert Dumb and Dumber/IOU quote here).
Question is: Will that be good enough to transfer the car into my aunt's name (my aunt bought the car) or will I need to take the RoL, turn it into a title, and then do the whole song and dance.

Option C would be my choice.

For what it's worth:
When I got rid of my Malibu (trade in) the dealer told me that an ROL was not good enough, which sucked because Natalie had misplaced the title and it took a few days to get a replacement printed. I verified what they told me with the DMV since it was a hassle and I wanted to be sure. I had to provide both the ROL and the title so I could sign the car over.

I paid off my wife's car 3 wks ago...got a rol in a week and a title 3 days after that. Ally should be able to provide you with a new title...wildbillyt is correct on what is needed for transfer to another party.
I am always afraid of this as well. I always send my certified check along w/usps delivery confirmation to ensure they get it, then call a few days afterwards to see status of rol and eta of title to my home.

When I talked to the people at Ally, they said they could send me a duplicate of the title, but it would take another 30 days...

Try talking to somebody else. Maybe a manager or something. That is pretty ridiculous.

I agree. Waiting 30 days due to their mistake is just wrong. I would escalate the situation. In the past I assume they would have no problem putting your feet to the fire if you happen to miss a payment and told them it would arrive in 30 days.

I went up the chain of command till the lady said the ROL was the same as a title and that a title would take 30 days.
I might have to get back on the phone with them today.
Call DMV and ask them if ROL is the "same", then tell ally what DMV says.

Or if they have paperwork, faxes usually make your words have merit.
