View Full Version : Wheel adaptor/spacer question
Looking at some zr1's or zo6 wheels for my 71 El Camino. Got some c5 brakes going on it and need some wheels. Anyways, in order to run either wheel I need to use a 2in adapter on the front and a 2.5in adapter on the rear. Anyone ever successfully run a setup like that for a long period of time or is a spacer that big just asking for trouble?

On a daily driver I wouldn't recommend it however I know plenty of guys that run that size of spacer/adptr for the exact same setup you have. Want you need to source is a quality billet one and to periodically check/torque them to make sure they are w/in spec. Check for any issues from time to time. One downfall is the amt of rolling mass/weight you will have by running these though.

you want adapters, not spacers. there are plenty of folks running adapters w/o a problem. i would suggest hub centric ones.

this.... MANY people run adaptors, I haven't heard of any failures when used properly. I have seen big turbo LSX third gens running 2.5ins all around with no trouble, including drags and road races. to me they just look unsafe to the eye, it's really a shocker when you see it mounted. hardened wheel studs would be nice too

Jeeps run adapters all the time.

Agreed. Adapters are what you want.

I use adapters on my G... no problems in 20000 miles.

What everyone said, but make sure you check what size you need after you do the brakes. The C5 upgrade might change the backspacing/offset of the wheel.

I know I need 17's to clear the fronts. I was thinking of running 17x9 soft 8's and blacking out the trim. I have the tool to measure so I'll double check once the brakes go on

I want you to be aware that Soft 8's weigh a ton - a 17" x 9" is going to weigh 35lbs or more each! Strong, yes, cheap yes, too heavy - yes.

I had considered running them on my Nova for a split second. I urge you to reconsider.

soft 8s, the cheap ass big wheel choice of the internet. when not in use they could anchor a battleship.

They are cheap and heavy. I'm not sure I want to deal with 40 lug nuts lol. It's not a race car just a cruiser and parts hauler.
I just looked up the weight, a 17x9 is 40lbs without the tire....yikes.

how often do you plan to remove the rotors? you don't have to remove the spacers to remove the wheels.
Found some hub centric and wheel centric adapters on ebay, going to go that route with c5 magnesium wheels
