ways to remove virus'/malware

sooo after years of owning my laptop with zero virus' i finally got one... now i have no idea how to get rid of it.. all the search results in google turn me to websites that ask me to download their antivirus, none of which ive heard off. i currently have sophos protection (was required by my school before logging into to their wifi) but it isnt doing anything and i still get pop up and my computer just running really slow. so far the symptoms are just random popup whenever i open a new tab, random adds on EVER webpage (in the corner of the add it says Ad by Unisales).

so far ive run 3 different scan using sophos, deleted and unistalled and random browser toolbars and programs install on my computer but idk how to actually get rid of the seed of it all.

so my question is to you, what can i do to fix this. obviously free is great but if it comes down to it i guess ill have to chalk up some cash

Are you opposed to doing a System Restore/reimage? I just took over a coworkers desktop that was nearly unusable, and the first (only) thing I did was go back in time and tell the computer to forget the last 12 months ever happened.

Obviously, you'll lose some files this way, but if they're critical (and you're sure they're not infected) then back them up on an external device and swap them over again once you're done with the reset.

try malwarebytes, get it on a different computer.

Put it on a flash drive, and boot your computer into safe mode with no networking and run it off of the flash drive.

Let it do a full scan as well as reboot scan, should clear everything up.
