Is this a fuel pump issue?

So I've been out of the Fbody game for a few years now as I picked up a G8 2 years ago and dumped a lot of cash into it, sold it this week and bought a 01 Z28 from a fellow member. Now I've had LS1 Fbodies in the past 2 Trans Am's, and a formula so I have experience with the cars.
The z28 has the standard fbody fuel gauge jumping needle where it will go from full to empty then back to full in a matter of seconds.

In assuming the fuel pump would need to be replaced, is this a correct assumption?
From the bit of Google research I've done I found that racetronix is now the go to instead of walbro now days, is this the case? And if so is the following link the correct kit that I need?

And to top it off I've completley rebuilt a ls1 drive train a few times but never had to drop the fuel tank. How hard is it for a first timer to do in a drive way? Is there any one local to Hamilton that would be able to give me some advice or even a hand?


Just to clarify things I would be dropping the tank as this is a convertible and I'd rather not hack thing ups.

The gauge bouncing back and forth could either be the gauge, the wiring, or the sender in the tank. Most likely the sender in the tank. So you would need a fuel pump and sending unit. Dropping the tank will require you to drop the exhaust out of the way, followed by disconnecting the panhard rod and un bolting the rear shocks and tq arm. This will allow the rear to swing down and forward enough to drop the tank out.

You can cut the sheet metal right above the top of the fuel tank. The pump is right there easy to pull out and replace/repair. There are a bunch of YouTube links that will show you the exact place to cut and exactly how to do it. I did it on my car and had the pump out and back in within 2hrs. I also ran the racetronics hot wire kit and was able to make all the connections right there. Some guys may not approve of this but if you take your time and do it right you won't have any issues.

If you have any doubt in your ability to cut and finish it off the right way then I would say drop the tank. Even tho you can cover it up at the end with the carpet you still don't wanna do it half assed.

As usual, both sides will argue the merits of each way. In the end it comes down to how much you care about doing things right.

I am curious how a fuel pump affects the sender though? I think on LT1 cars they share a common ground through the bulkhead but thats the only connection...

I'd check ohms reading from the tank as the gauge jumps around. if the ohms don't vary, the issue is in the wiring or the cluster.

Its more than likely an issue with the fuel pump sending unit.

I already swapped clusters and verified the problem with the new one.

You could cut it and it would be fine. However in my opinion its worth it to do it right. I'm not a fan of cutting a hole in a perfectly good trunk floor
