View Full Version : 97 z28 for $300?

i had someone offering me a 97 z28 auto hard top not running for $300, it's been sitting for a while and seams like #8 plug got shot out of the treads, it has a Borla exhaust system in great shape that alone is worth that much, even dough i don't need another car the challenge is very tempting...is it worth the trouble?

Buy it and part it

knowing me i would try to fix it instead, i wouldn't be able to resist the challenge, and since i do everything myself it will be sitting for a while

the wheels themselves will get you 50 - 100 bucks from people just looking for cheap winter sets. easily.

I would buy It!! That's a steal even if you buy it and resell it or call one of those car sale numbers you will get $1000. or fix the engine and flip the car for profit. I would take it just for parts so I could build a cheap LSX engine to put in my 86 Camaro. If you have the extra money, space, time, tools and know what your doing it's well worth it.

I don't have the time to part it out and really don't want to do it.
I need to clean up my yard so $300 come and get it. Bring a trailer. As stated, between rear and exhaust you could double your money lol.

The engine still in it? Are the floors solid?

theres a complete LT1 engine on CL for a few hundred bucks, if u can do the swap urself u could make a few g's

if it was manual i would get it, but living in a town house and we already have 4 cars i only have room for 1 more and that's it, i can fix the engine myself as i already build a few but no time and patience for that anymore.

84355z28

another thing is i do not have the heart to part out a perfectly fixable car, if it was hit bad yes but it deserves to be fixed and driven

BonzoHansen

suckers sentiment. part it out so other cars may live a better life!

town house and we already have 4 cars ==> that answers the should you buy it question lol

I'm picking it up tomorrow, i have a place to put it and the wife's blessing...lol.
But it's not being parted out, i have to diagnose/fix the problems, do a compression test, get it running and if needed pull out the engine to rebuilt, it also needs some body work and paint, maybe a satin black?

I'd honestly helicoil the #8 plug and send it down the road but even that is too much work for me to do lol. I have my work truck torn apart for a rebuild, my plow truck torn apart for rockers and cab corners and my Pete has an air leak behind the dash that I haven't even looked at.

It is , looks like someone drilled in there and didn't bother to protect, there's also allot of rust underneath, it's been sitting in the dirt for 2 years so... some stuff might have to be replaced, panhard bar, and lower control arms seam to be the worst, mabe break lines, nothing too bad just surface rust some P.O.R.and patience it will look brand new, but still have to lift it to inspect everything.

Hopefully its just easy mechanical parts and doesn't need a lot of body work (floor pan rot, that radiator rot, etc.)

when money invested exceeds value... time to chop, and value is maybe 1800 or so.

Interior, and body are in great shape, floors are good and seats are like new, carpet is very clean, I do all the work myself mechanical body work and paint I can even build the panhard bar and track bars I did it before I just need time and a bunch of cheap used parts...lol
For me it's the challenge that counts not is it worth it or not

thanks, i appreciate the offer, i inspected the rear a bit better today after i got it on the ramps and there's some rust spots that i don't like, i have to think this better, it might not worth the time invested if i have to cut and rebuilt rear suspension brackets, or get a used rear.

Lol...just temporary but works.
Update
I found 4 injectors stuck open 3 of them I got them to switch but one doesn't want to cooperate

84355z28
06-23-2015, 05:55 PM
never mind, the injectors keep getting stuck open, they work for a whille then they get stuck sooo.... a set of fresh Bosch 24lbs are on the way, coolant temperature sensor is also bad, that should be all engine wise.

They physically get stuck?

They physically get stuck?

yes, if i hit them lightly they start working but after seating for a few minutes when i test them again they don't switch anymore, i got a good deal on a set of freshly cleaned Bosch 24lbs for $85.00 they fit good and work great, she runs nice and smooth now

84355z28
07-18-2015, 03:58 PM
some progress, new break rotors, pads and break lines, CAI (no more duct tape LOL) and notice no more rot spot on the rad support, patched floor board holes, some body work done, exhaust straightened out, glued headliner back on (not very proud of the outcome but i'll take care of it latter).
Definitely i'm replacing the rear end, too much work to get it right but for now i'll just do some temporary fixes.
It runs nice and smooth, fuel trims are -7% at idle but the SES light is on with the darn p1351 code

Have you spaced the coil off of the head?

84355z28
07-19-2015, 02:00 PM
yes i did, 2 washers but the ICM and coil are aftermarket so that might be the problem judging by my research, just ordered brand new GM ones, we'll see.

thanks for the offer, i did clean it and i think that's what ruined it lol
i rather (i did) get one with a few month warranty.

It's almost ready for the road, rear control arms and panhard bar are on the way, need to do some fabrication on the panhard bar mount since its rot out some.
I keep a list of expenses, so far i got $1130.00 on it, including car, trailer rental, parts and materials, fluids.
I still didn't decide on the paint, i was thinking Satin Black but i'm not sure about it anymore, metallic black would look nice too but i don't want to paint the door jams so maybe just plain Jet Black

Thanks, the paint is not perfect but being done in a small garage it came out pretty good.
What's left to do is one shifting solenoid on the transmission is not working but they are cheap and I was planning on changing the fluid and filter anyway, the cats are gutted but the o2 spacers seam to be working and it should pass emissions next week, ABS isn't working but no big deal cause the brakes work great, I'll get to that latter.
