fabric dye

does anyone have any experience with fabric dye? my father and i are working on a project and want to dye the fabric to a dark grey or black. they are car seats.

does anyone have any experience with this stuff? i see duplicolor makes some in a spray can but is it any good? or would we be better off with like a brush on type

I've used SEM products with pretty good luck, but never did seats. What material is the fabric on the seats? I'd think since they are high wear items they might need periodic touching up, but it might be pretty cost effective if the products used provide a quality finish. And I've only used the spray on products.
