R-12 to R-134A?

The A/C in my car doesn't work at the moment. I was trying to find a kit the has everything needed to make the change over, but I'm currently unable to find one. A decade a go when i was in UTI I know they were out there, and was wondering if you guys knew where I could find it, or best way to go about it? Or even if you knew any good places to get the R-12 systems serviced. Thanks.

I do R12 & 134a.

to convert you need to flush the system and change the orings. Replacement of some parts is preferred.

I have an 85 Trans-am with the base 4brl 305/5 speed.

A lot of the time to get decent AC performance you need to change out the condenser.

If you go to any major parts store you can request a retrofit kit. It will include new service fittings, a few valves and a sticker indicating that the vehicle has R134 instead of R12. I would also recommend replacing at least the receiver/dryer (the canister looking piece) they have a desiccant bag inside of them to adsorb moisture and will also retain some of the old oil. After that I run a vacuum on the system for 30 min or so.

That is the way I've done a majority of my retrofits and have never had an issue. The correct procedure is to disassemble and flush all of the old oil from the system, refill oil, replace dryer and TXV or orifice tube, vacuum then recharge

The new charge weight is 90% of the original. If you had an original charge of 3lbs R12 your new charge would be roughly 2.7lbs or 2lbs 12 oz with R134.

I was hoping to find a kit that had the new dryer and compressor as well as the seals and new fittings. Thanks for the info though. Also possibly look into cost of having it done, since I don't have te supplies to recover, or put into a vacuum.

If you get it done by a GM Service Garage, look at around $450.00!:shock:

Once you start taking it apart, you don't want to be in some off the road garage that has to start fishing for the parts you will need for a 25-30 year old system. Also a warranty comes in handy IF there are problems. Just my :2cents:

I've bought a decent amount of stuff from them, good quality parts. I believe they have/can put together, retrofit kits.
