View Full Version : Rear Hatch Issues

Went the other day to open the rear hatch so i can pull my taillights off, but was unsuccessful.

No battery in the car, so i was doing it with the key itself. Key Opens the door locks no issues, but when i tried to open the hatch it turned about an 1/4 of the amount it needs to and then wont budge. Ive tried both sets of keys and both open the door fine but will not do anything with the hatch.

Anyone ever run into this ?

Could be out of alignment or even the latch mechanism is dry. When I replaced the hatch struts it liked to stick and needed a jiggle. I cleaned the assembly and re-applied grease and it made a noticeable difference.

If the key isn't turning then I'd lean against an alignment issue, but it should be easy enough to figure out. Hook the car up to some power & try it via the remote. Does the actuator engage & try popping the trunk open?

Also, Cant hook it up to power without the harness in the car lol

Can i unbolt the latch by climbing my rotund body to the back from the inside to get it open ?

In theory, you could crawl back there and do one or multiple of the following:

take a pick or screwdriver to the latch mechanism to release the hatch.
unbolt the latch from the rear panel of the car
assuming the plastic trim on the underside of the hatch is already removed, unbolt the latch from the hatch side
assuming the headliner is off, unbolt the 4 studs that go into the roof of the car, where the hatch and sail panel meet.

However expectations should be kept in check; You're fairly robust.

This is the same guy who cut a hole in his hood to fit a LS1 under it?

Drill hole through tumbler, locks are overrated.

Did it really take 8 posts before someone mentioned a god damn sawzall????? **** that latch, cut it to pieces!!

While turning the key, did you try both pushing down and pulling up on the hatch? Else its what queer mike said....

Plastic rear panel happens to be the only panel removed from the interior oddly enough.

Will have a go at it today

crawled in the back and unbolted the latch to get the hatch open.

Looks like the latch itself is fine, but the lock still doesnt turn as it needs. The rod coming off it has a few kinks in it, but they look factory. Ill snag some pics later
