The converter lockup on my wife's 86 trans am is hooked to a toggle switch because it wasn't working properly. I'm putting a new motor in the car and the specs are calling for around 3000 stall speed. Can I use a non lockup converter in this transmission and keep the switch turned off?

I seem to remember that it's a bit more complex than that due to the way the fluid is routed. Something like 4th gear gets some of its fluid from the lock up circuit.

Take a look at this:

Personally I'd keep the lockup feature. JMO.

Well the problem is its broken anyway, so I figured if I keep it turned off it wolnt matter. She never uses the switch to lock the converter as it is. I don't plan on keeping the trans for long. It will get t56 swapped at a later date.

Too much to do, trans inst coming out. Might just keep the stock converter for the time being

If the motor you're using is calling for a 3k converter and you use a stock 1200-1400, you're going to have a bad time.
