As some folks have seen, my father and I decided to go a bit old school and play with a 1981 Turbo TA. Who knows how long we will have it for but with the current fleet in good running order, we seem to always need a project to tinker with. The car has good "bones" and with some work, could be a real nice car. It fires right up and sounds perfect IMO (nice chop with deep tone).

The basics:

1981 Turbo Trans Am
LS Swap with a custom comp turbo cam, Edel Carb, Edel Intake, Dual Valve Springs w/ titanium retainers, Fbody oil pan
TH350 trans
Stainless Headers, 3" dual exhaust
MSD 6010 controller
140gph pump (too much)
Aluminum 3 row rad w/ electric fan
4 wheel discs
Limited slip diff

What is needs: The car runs and drives but needs a few simple items to make it OK for the road

Tires
Brakes bled (hopefully all it needs)
Shocks, bushings

Fixes:

Sagging doors (hopefully its just the bushings but prob will need new brackets)
Re-align the body panels a bit
Get radio working and other odds and ends

The Plan:
Not really sure at the moment. Since the car isn't original, a restoration per the book doesn't make sense and it's money I wouldn't want to throw at it anyway. Right now, I see this being a car to get on the road to enjoy as a fun cruiser. It has the right sound so we just need to bring the looks up to par. The fuel pump may need to go since it's pretty race car right now (noisy, too much for engine). The prior owners had plans to eventually turbo the car, convert to FI and a 4L60.

I'm thinking we toss some fun aftermarket seats, steering wheel, gauges and paint it to give it a fresh look. The rear gears are way too tall (2.73) so I think a step up in ratio will make it fun while turning somewhat reasonable RPMs on the highway. I'm debating on the color since I know the traditional is black/gold. I think this car would look cool in an impact color (B5 blue, admiral blue were some of my ideas). A bird will go on the hood of course.

We bought it already swapped. The original owner has a cylinder head shop near Forked River so they planned to do a modern interpretation of a Turbo TA. They have a few too many projects and limited space. They wanted to put money into a 1st gen Camaro they have (rightfully so). No 30+ year old car is perfect so I think for this one, my Dad and I just need to balance the $ vs resale should we get bored and want something different.

Sweet.

*Tires - If staying 15s run 245/60/15, Coopers, BFG or MTs.
*Shocks, bushings - look at the RideTech street grip system.
*4 wheel discs - make sure they actually work, and the e-brakes works properly. This is key to keeping those calipers working
*Sagging doors - rebuild the hinges. Fun! Hinge tool (https://www.amazon.com/Door-Spring-Compressor-Light-Trucks/dp/B0025CXPYY)
*Get radio working - I have a single din NIB pioneer CD w/USB here, cheap $40

Black & gold is so over played it makes my head hurt! Silver looks **** on these cars. There was also a very cool blue in like 77 or 78. White is ok too

Get the AC working (maybe wait for EFI on that).
How does the metal under the t-top gaskets look?

If that fan doesn't keep up in the heat look at 4th gen fans. Fit right in.

Look at that fancy 81 only console. No map pocket - that is where the stock ECM was located.

TAs have excellent resale. Can't wait to see progress

Thanks for the info. We will keep these wheels and stock tire sizes (maybe go a touch wider if desired. For the doors, I've watched a few vids where they say the pin can oval the whole making them junk. Won't know until we take it apart!

As for color, I think going off the normal path is where we want to be with this. The fan did look rather small so we will see how it does.

The AC looks to be gutted so I will have to see how far they went with it. The car currently has no t-top seals ("Was ready for paint" LOL). We will put the seals on after it's painted but metal looks good.

My friend's family owns Shout! Graphics up in Flemington. Let me know if you'd be interested in doing a wrap. They could always incorporate the bird into a hood graphic as well.

And what do you mean by the fuel pump is too much? Is it flooding the carb over? Whats the fuel pressure at the carb?

Excellent. That roof metal is one reason i parted the 81Z i had. All the rot was hidden. I think they make the w/s for those tops. Not the aluminum m trim around them though. They look like gm/fisher tops.

Yes the hinges can do that, but normally bushings do the trick.

Stock 225/70/15 are too tall and narrow. Thats why I like the 245/60s, wider and about 1/2"+ shorter, not a lot but enough.

Not sure how soon paint will make the to do list, but going off the charts too much can hurt resale. Just because you mentioned resale earlier. What color was it new? Got a pic of the cowl tag?

Hopefully the tires come in a little cheaper. I was a bit surprised at the cost of the stock size. No decisions on paint will be made hastily. The color new looks to be a dark metallic blue. The underside of the trunk lid shows the color. Tough to see in the pic. As for the cowl tag, I don't have a pic but can grab it later.

no but you get high quality shocks & bushings, no need for tubular arms or such. On the value side you can check out customworks.

although if it has the big TA sway bars you really don't need to replace them at all.

PolarBear

Customworks! If you want the car to handle see Keith, prices are really reasonable too.
SFCs are a must like 3rd and 4th gens. And put in solid body bushings

Variety is the spice of life and I'm not sure how much $ we want to put into the car just yet. The current bird is a perpetual money pit. The new cars are just that, new. This one needs to be fun but within a budget that should we want to part with it, not lose our ass.

In regard to the Black and Gold design, that's the color setup where ALL the top redone Trans Am are looking like. Just watch Velocity (channel 150) and also Overhaulen' to check out how these cars POP when done. I know it's overkill, but if your thinking about resale, go with what SELLS. A wrap is another thought, as it can be made with all the Gold stripes built in just like the Bandit.:se:

We won't be taking this to that level. If it was a special rare car signed by Burt, then sure it may be worth it. Black paint will require the most prep and love afterward so just kind of a time vs reward thing. Friend has a hood and shaker that might be fun to toss on here.

Not looking to blow 15-20k guys. If I was going to do that, I would have built the Supra and maybe got a bigger return lol.

This will get done in steps with the intent of keeping it a solid, running/driving car. Tires, brakes and suspension will be addressed first.

Anyone happen to know the measurements to know if the car has the "big" sway bars?

Keep the turbo hood, its rare and cool. Shakers are played out and worth less.

Big ole burnout before you replace tires is required

Leaning towards Martinique Blue, gold turbo wheels, gold/blue bird, and keep the turbo hood. I really like the color and it would keep it within the general period of the car.

This is the color.

Realy personal preference. Black & Blues seems to be good choices. Marty blue & silver is a nice combo when done properly. Blk/ blk. Blk/tan along with marty or nocturne blue and tan work well.

He was real curious what may be hiding under this thick coating so he started sanding the rear quarter. Obviously some work was done but thankfully the body continues to look solid underneath. He hit it with some color real quick just to see what would happen. We know it doesn't look good but it was more of a test. The color from the can is showing darker than intended but again, this will get painted properly so we aren't concerned at the moment.

Looks like nitro stain (reddish) in there. Watch that stuff as it shrinks and F's up your finished product. Its a old product that is no longer recommended.

OE colors looks to be Nocturne blue. Nice color.

I may have a set of tails if yours are bad. A buffer works great for the lens. Just watch the heat build up.

Thanks for the comments on the red stuff. Our current plan is to strip it completely and go from there. We do not want any crappy product or prep screwing with the new paint.

The one tail light had some significant cracks but my Dad did a nice job with the repair. They will get some VHT nightshade as well.

There are a few coats of clear put over top the VHT. It will have that shine brah. Good tip though.

He wasn't happy with the rattle can efforts on the body. Not that he expected amazing results but he painted in high temp, high humidity and basically it was flashing as it hit the panel.

It's only been almost a year so why not toss up an update.

The winter stalled major progress on the car but my Dad is back on it just about every day. The body work is pretty close to complete but still requires some final fitment/sanding/etc. It's pretty crazy but my Dad, who is 60 years old mind you, has been putting in 10-14 hr days almost every day for weeks. The attention to detail is pretty crazy so I'm hoping the results come out after all this diligent prep. A couple images below are my dad "working the body line".

http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w170/bmdeluca/Turbo%20TA/IMG_20180609_214355_765_zps0t5tneq1.jpg (http://s176.photobucket.com/user/bmdeluca/media/Turbo%20TA/IMG_20180609_214355_765_zps0t5tneq1.jpg.html)

My sister took this pic of my Dad on father's day. Dad didn't know it was being taken as he would have brought his gut in a bit. I still like it.

http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w170/bmdeluca/Turbo%20TA/FB_IMG_1529259592624_zps28xtg5r9.jpg (http://s176.photobucket.com/user/bmdeluca/media/Turbo%20TA/FB_IMG_1529259592624_zps28xtg5r9.jpg.html)

Upon the previous assembly effort, we didn't see it at the time but 4 mid/rearward body mounts were not in good shape. There wasn't much point to continuing with body fitment until we know the body and frame are in happy harmony. Luckily I had purchased solid aluminum body bushings to remedy the issue. Sadly, replacement of them was not as easy as I had hoped. The "mid" mount on the drivers side has a pad off the frame for the bushing to sit. Well the center of it had rotted away so that wasn't going to work. On the other side, the bolt was rusted to the nut in the body so the head decided to snap off. I did get the rear and front bushings replaced but that wasn't going to be good enough.

After some deliberation, we hooked up with a local certified welder to give a hand. Off came the front fenders and wheel wells for access. Luckily, no cutting of the body was needed and they were able to get the old nut/bolt free from the car. I purchased a repair kit from UMI for the frame work which worked beautifully. They burned that in so not the bushing on the drivers side has a place to sit. The other side was easier for them so all was well. Of course it wouldn't be that easy though.... When the fuel line was moved out of the way for welding, it decided to spring a leak. While my Pops wasn't pleased, I saw it as a good thing to happen now vs later.

http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w170/bmdeluca/Turbo%20TA/IMG_20180626_183508_zpsuhb9p7qo.jpg (http://s176.photobucket.com/user/bmdeluca/media/Turbo%20TA/IMG_20180626_183508_zpsuhb9p7qo.jpg.html)
http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w170/bmdeluca/Turbo%20TA/IMG_20180626_183518_zpscgx4bvaz.jpg (http://s176.photobucket.com/user/bmdeluca/media/Turbo%20TA/IMG_20180626_183518_zpscgx4bvaz.jpg.html)

The fuel line was removed with plans to run a fresh one from front to back. In the mean time, we took the opportunity to have our welder friends install the subframe connectors. These could have been bolted in but its nice they got welded. The chassis should be in good shape now.

This is hopefully the last week it is at my house before it goes to the paint shop for some color. Right now there is a lot of fix/prep work being done under the hood because once all the body is back on, it will be a pain to get to those areas. Most notably this includes refurbishing/replacement of the HVAC assembly, run the new fuel line, and replacing spark plugs. From there, the body will go on for final fitment/prep before it's time to get it to paint.

There is a ton of work left to do but the paint will be a huge step. I have a ton of pics saved to a Google Drive acct so all the progress will be made available for those who care to see it later on.

Big progress yesterday. My Dad's friend, Dave, swung by to give a hand with putting the body panels back on the car.....again. Everything lined up much much better this time. I guess it helps to make sure the body doesn't move independently from the frame LOL. The hood/fender/door line at the top is pretty damn good. There might be room for some slight final tweaking once reassembled after paint but it is certainly acceptable.

Dave was giving my Dad some pointers on "working the body line" so now that everything is where it needs to be, Pops will finalize the body work so its one step closer to paint.

Tonight was interesting. More prep work and sanding. Dad spent most of the day running a new fuel hard line. I tossed in a new coolant temp sensor and fired it up. All was well until I saw rain underneath the car. Pops attempted a hard bend and pop went the line with fuel squirting right on the muffler. After much evaluation, I decided to give things a go with a new hard line. I used much of his as a template which helped and learned how to flare the ends. We had an advance auto rental tool which I broke, repaired and improved with a C clamp.

I replaced the line, primed the pump and started the car. A factory hard line at the front now decided to leak. I decided to simplify things and ran the soft line from the regulator right to the new hardline which thankfully reached.

For now it's good and she runs again.

This was a "make sure the car doesn't become a fireball/runs/drives" situation. I need to get a gauge on the fuel line since I am assuming this thing is getting too much fuel. Old plugs had tons of carbon on them but still worked. The new plugs made a big difference. It does start up pretty well though and holds an idle lol.

So it was quite the weekend. Pops was working on the body work Friday after the rain stopped and all day Saturday. While sanding, he broke through the primer in a few areas so those got a recoat late Saturday evening. He was probably out there until 11:30PM but it was now all one color again.

I loaded the truck with all the parts later in the day and planned to get the car on the trailer in the AM. With the car on the trailer, I noticed one of the tires looked low on air. I assumed I got a nail and sure enough....yep. Good thing I have a spare right??? The spare mount has two studs and nuts. It seems the trailer place that tossed this one for me crossthreaded one of the nuts but thankfully my impact got it off. I let it sit on the ground for a good while before attempting to handle it.

The spare went on and off we went to Pt. Pleasant. At this point, the AM didn't go as I planned and was now running about 1.5 hrs late. To say I was pissed and in a crappy mood was an understatement. Thankfully we didn't hit much traffic and it all got there safely. My Dad and I met up with my sister and Adam for lunch. Adam was nice enough to crack the shop open to plug and swap the wheel/tire.

Well those of you on social media already know the color but for those staying off the grid, here is where she ended up Saturday night. Alan from All Time Auto Body did a great job laying down the paint. It is essentially a volvo metallic silver under lazer blue (somewhat translucent) with clear over top. There is a little "crushed glass" in there as well which will pop when the sun comes out. The depth and character of the paint is amazing. It will be dark in one image, light in another so it's like owning 6 cars at once. The outside images were thwarted a bit by overcast skies so we will see this thing really pop in the sun.

Next is sanding and a final buff to make this like glass.

Pops watching on patiently in the "delivery room". He decided to start a Vlog during this process which somehow led him to developing an italian's version of a southern accent.

Painted black as well as key hole. They are normally chrome/shiny. Personal preference but since they protrude, no sense hiding it with body color paint IMO.

There is a good deal of trim left to go and once all body work is complete, the interior will go back in. Once done, we will then move on to the mechanical bits (install new suspension, refresh brakes, etc) to make her road worthy.

We ran into a few snags (hardware related) but overall it progressed. A pal swooped in towards the end to show me how to pack a wheel bearing and to help out a bit so we could get some dinner.

The intent was to get the big pieces installed so all that was left for today is the front passenger rotor/bearing/pads and the front sway bar. The rear rotors/pads will get done at a later date. Cleaning of everything is needed but with it sitting in the shop day after day, it's going to keep getting dirty so it will get a proper bath once all the shop work is complete.

Mid-decade update.....

This project got put on the back burner for several reasons and sat around until a year or so ago when it was a piss or get off the pot situation. The lifters got a little noisy so those were swapped out with a fresh set from Morel along with new pushrods, headgaskets, etc. Everything looked pretty clean and all looked to be in good shape when it went back together.

I set a goal to get the car back on the road. The carb situation needed to go so with the help of Smash, the car was converted over to Holley Terminator fuel injection. I sourced a LS1 intake, injectors, rails to get it rolling while installing an electric fuel pump and new lines. I decided to go with an electronic throttle body with a slick pedal/mount setup. I cobbled together a basic intake from some old parts I had laying around and ended up needing to grab a LS3 Camaro waterpump so the new electronic TB could be attached with some ICT billet hardware. Regarding the Holley, I was incredibly impressed that after answering 7 questions on the little 3.5" screen that the damn thing fired over and idled better than it ever has.

I may or may not have taken it down the road for one of the sketchiest rides I've ever taken in a vehicle. The alignment was way off and the Holley was doing its best to keep it all running fine. I checked the box that technically it was "on the road".

From there, there were some odds/ends that I wanted addressed so I went to the 2nd Gen specialist (Larry - 2nd Gen Engineering) to get those done. I had a fairly extensive check-list all with the intent of getting it road worthy. Like any project, things snowballed and as you dig in, you find more items to be addressed. Larry cleaned up some of the wiring, installed a nice relay/fuse box, identified what wires were what from the original car, got the brakes sorted out, new e-brake cable, tilt steering rack, alignment, new tinted glass all the way around, new headliner and repaired the inner roof structure by the windshield. He also did a little tuning on the Holley to improve the driveability. As a last minute surprise, the TH350 gave up on one of the test drives so a known working used one got popped in to keeping it moving. I'm sure I missed a few things there but it was a healthy amount of work.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/w170/bmdeluca/FB_IMG_1646344154059.jpg

The car got home and was put on the semi back burner again as I was in the process of moving to my new home. Once the dust settled a bit and I had time to drive the car a little more a few things stuck out that still needed to be addressed.

1. Steering - Very vague, felt loose etc. - Ended up adjusting the steering box which made a big improvement but still think a little more needs to be done.
2. Engine temps - The car ran warm, not hot so the single fan with no shroud had to go. Grabbed the rad/fans from Bonzo off his partout car and ended up just using the fans as the rad in the car is pretty large. Thanks for Larry for having that 2nd fan circuit ready to roll so that was pretty easy all things considered.
3. Transmission - TH350 sucked. No kickdown with the electronic TB, short shifted, etc. Grabbed a RPM Lvl 7 4L60E and 3800 stall converter from a forum member and stuffed that in with Taylor/Chris along with other conversion parts. This really transformed how the car drove and glad I bit the bullet. A big trans cooler was also installed/plumbed. The shiftworks conversion kit for the factory shifter was pretty slick. Everything installed well and they even include the updated PRNDL insert.
4. Wheels/Tires - The factory 15s got a slight refinish but in general not all that suitable for the use of the car. Larry got me a hookup on Year One 17" snowflakes a little while back so I finally grabbed a set of tires with Beggs support. I actually liked the look of the turbo wheels but the silver snowflakes really pop nicely.

Short vid of it running through the gears post install

Past few weeks I've done some short trips around town which have all seemed to go well.

Next steps are unknown exactly. Part of me would like to keep doing odds/ends with the car but the other gives me some pause as to get it to the level I'd like would take some very significant dollars. The paint on the car presents well from 10-15' but there are some areas where rust has crept up. Nothing egregious but you all know how finicky I can be. The car would need to be stripped completely, areas addressed and resprayed. The interior is complete but you'd want to replace items to make it look perfect.

For now I will drive it, take it to a few cruise nights, toss a FS sign on it and maybe someone who sees the bones are all there will want to give me a good number for it. Maybe in the interim it gets some boost to make it a modern turbo TA. We will see...

It will get some continued love as its cheaper to play with than anything else I would want to do. Also, all the room is spoiling me vs usual 4th gen and modern car designs.

I will play with the tune a little more granted its pretty good right now. I want to adjust shift points a couple hundred rpm and apply the Holley adjusted learning to the base tune so that's closer. AFRs look good etc.

You'll have to ask Larry on that one. Original cars will be original.

I also don't hate the turbo wheels and agree on a modern rendition would be pretty cool. Might look odd with it upsized and a shorter sidewall tire though.

Now you must die

While I value open and constructive dialogue, I must express my disappointment with the tone and content of your message.

I believe in fostering a respectful and productive environment for communication, and it is important to me that we treat one another with courtesy and professionalism. Unfortunately, your tone came across as aggressive and threatening, which is neither necessary nor conducive to a healthy exchange of ideas.

It is essential for us to maintain a level of mutual respect and understanding when engaging in conversations, even when we may disagree. It allows us to better comprehend each other's perspectives and work towards finding common ground or a resolution.

Moreover, I found the threatening nature of your message deeply concerning. It is crucial to remember that words have a profound impact on others, and it is our responsibility to use them wisely. Threatening language creates an atmosphere of fear and hostility, inhibiting any meaningful discourse.

Moving forward, I kindly request that we maintain a more respectful and considerate tone in our communication. By doing so, we can establish a more productive and collaborative environment that fosters understanding and cooperation.

If you have any concerns or issues that you would like to discuss further, I encourage you to approach me with an open mind and a willingness to find a mutually beneficial solution.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. I believe that through respectful and constructive dialogue, we can resolve any differences and cultivate a more positive relationship.

It's okay for me to talk about my job, as long as I'm not specific. I am the Sergeant of a three-man Rapid Tactical Force at one of America's largest indoor retail shopping areas. Although there are typically between fifteen and twenty normal security officers working the beat there, we decided a while ago that it would be best to have a specilized force for violent individuals. We use modified electric vehicles and can be anywhere on a given floor within eight and a half minutes.

Naturally, the regular security people are unarmed. We "RTFers", by arrangement with the local police, carry high-strength OC spray and batons. If we have a full tactical alert and permission from the local LEOs we also have a Mossberg 500 with less-lethal rounds and two K-frame Smith .38s loaded with 158gr. LRN.

I am writing a proposal to replace our current Mossberg/Smith armament with the following:

3 MP5K-PDW with red-dot sights;

2 G36 rifles using SS109 rounds;

3 Glock practical tacticles in .357 Sig

1 PSG-1 using Fed Gold Medal .308

1 Starlight scope for the PSG-1 in case we lose power in the building.

3 Glock 27 backup guns

3 Kahr P-9 holdouts

I think this would make us capable of facing nearly any situation. I'll let you know what the management says!!!

"Who’s joe?" a distant voice asks.

Instantly everyone nearby hears the sound of 1,000s of bricks rapidly shuffling towards his location.

The earth itself seemed to cry out in agony, until finally the ground itself split open and a horrific creature crawled from the ground, covered in mucus and tar.

”Joe Momma…” the creature whispered.

The man cried out in pain as he disintegrated into dust, and the whole world fell silent in fear.

"I did a little trolling." the wretched creature remarked before burrowing back into the earth.
