Sheds: Thanks!
BLS: Because after just 4.5 short years of nearly obsessive cleaning and rinsing out the underside of the Ram, it was developing cancer in the drivers side quarter, from the inside out. Talked to the dealership's body guy about corrosion warranty, and he told me that while they would probably cover it, the repair would more or less be a craptacular bandaid that would hold for about 6 months before popping through again. The right fix would be replacing the rusty stuff, what they were going to do was grind off the rusty stuff, hit it with 'converter' and whatever fill was needed, then repaint.
That was enough for me to 'nope' the hell right out of there.

Thanks, ARock! If I wasn't }{ that close to having my Ram paid off, and there weren't a couple of 2017 loaded diesel Colorados sitting around in lots that dealers wanted to get rid of because the '18s were right next to them, I couldn't have pulled it off. I got a screaming deal, a great trade in and 0% financing.
LTb1ow: Yeah, I hear you. Funny thing is after the front factory snow plow, er... air dam fell off and landed in my shed, it seemed to let a little more of the diesel music shine through.
The reasons why, in the rear wheel well:

If you look carefully, you can spot the tiny bubbles in the paint making their way to the outer surface.
When I stuck a camera probe behind this, there was more rust evident, it just didn't show yet.

The more I looked around, the more I kept finding signs of thin paint and rust starting:

Lovin it! Hope it serves you well. I'd love to grab a canyon variant....
As for the wheel well rust, I've seen it on every brand truck out there. Biggest issue is the folded over lip catching all of the terrible the rear wheels kick up. I would check your current truck for a similar situation and take preventative measures 8-)

I have 4 silverados ranging in age of 4 and 10 years, from 40k to 150k miles and none of them have any. None of them are washed as regularly as they should be, let alone to Keith levels.
My uncle's 01 suburban is in the same boat, but has rust along the rocker panels with 270k miles.
I have 12 Express vans between 2 and 13 years old and 40k to 240k miles. None of them have rust somehow
Meanwhile I have an 04 F250 that's rusting to pieces with 120k miles.

Maybe? :shifty:
If you know anyone there, definitely not.

What really sucks is I genuinely liked the Ram and the plan was to hold onto it. Problem is if the rust gets visible resale/trade-in effectively becomes zero and repairs cost $$.
Congrats Keith, you know how I feel about RAM products despite my father owning one

Hah! Yeah, I know your feelings regarding Ram trucks. I liked mine, had no mechanical issues. However from a longevity issue, visible rust at 4.5 years old wasn't working for me.

nice truck man ! awesome. My coworker has wanted to get one of these for a bit, but has not pulled the trigger yet. Keep us updated and it will help me convince him to get one.
Luckily I have no rust on the insides of my wheel wells on my 2006 dodge ram w 51,000 miles. Since I got it, I have been spraying rubberized undercoating up in there especially on the inner upper lip to prevent rust. So far so good. The fluid film and boeshield intrigues me, maybe I could do that for the rest of the chassis though. cool

I was sitting here, bored and wondering what I was going to do about the chrome stuff on my truck, and the bright yellow chevy emblems.
Chevy makes blacked out emblems, but that's $$ than can be better used elsewhere.
Then I remembered that I have a roll of carbon fiber vinyl wrap that I got for something else a few years ago, put on a shelf and promptly forgot about.
I dug it out. Wanted to try a bit of it on *something*. Looked around and found my key fob.
https://i.imgur.com/wnqz8yn.jpg
Considering that this took me all of 3.43 minutes, I think it turned out OK. A little heat from a blow dryer helped with the curves and some quick work with a semi-dull razor knife dressed up the edges.
Should work OK on the emblems, I think. Definitely going to plasti-dip the chrome badges. I have black and gunmetal plasti-dip, can't find anthracite around here.

sweetbmxrider
11-04-2017, 03:55 PM
I'm not sure. Might be too bland or lack of shine. I think center bowtie in carbon fiber could do the trick. If not, gloss black emblems would probably be my vote.
The_Bishop
11-04-2017, 06:27 PM
Once the new carbon fiber wrap gets here I'll be doing that middle insert. The stuff I have has been sitting on a shelf for three years and is sort-of noname so I don't really trust it.

This stuff is super-crappy. It's stiff and very fragile even when warmed up with a heat gun. The adhesive sucks. I have no illusions on how long it's going to last and the remainder of the roll I have went into the garbage when I was done.
So, thoughts?

Now that I've been screwing around with this wrap stuff, I've been kicking around the idea of wrapping the black T-Top trim that runs along the roof (it's looking a bit weathered) and even possibly wrapping the T-Tops themselves to keep some of the sun out of the car when the tops are on.
Edit: On my Camaro, doh! I don't have a T-Top Colorado.

Duratracs in 265/65/17. On paper, only marginally bigger than the stock 255/65/17 Goodyear Wrangler Adventures (With Kevlar!) but a lot meatier looking on the truck.
Anti_Rice_Guy
11-08-2017, 03:40 PM
Now it's starting to look right! Duratracs are a pretty solid tire, I put them on my uncle's Suburban and my dad's Ram for the winter. Very quiet for the tread.
The_Bishop
11-08-2017, 04:01 PM
The reviews on them are solid. With my chosen career, I need to get to work no matter the weather, so hopefully these will serve well for the next two years!

Thanks. Having driven around on them a bit I'm really happy with them. They seem to feel better on the road than the stock tires. Have some friends that plow who swear by them, so the snow/ice traction should be good. The fact that they look 100% more badass than the stock tires is a nifty bonus.

The_Bishop
11-16-2017, 05:39 PM
I'm hoping the Provent keeps the oil out of that mess. Dry soot blows through, it's when it mixes with the oil you get that disaster. Can't honestly understand why the factory doesn't install these things as factory equipment.

Haven't updated this in a while, here's the latest:
Scored a replacement intake tube that keeps the stock airbox but ditches the big muffler attached to it so there's more of that sweet, sweet diesel growl:
https://i.imgur.com/dce1xil.jpg
Opened up the Provent to see what's happening inside after draining out about 4oz of condensation and a couple of tablespoons of oil:
https://i.imgur.com/Q2XIXjO.jpg
While I was at it, I checked the turbo inlet to see how well the provent is keeping the oil out of everything, and it's bone dry:
https://i.imgur.com/YW3rcfD.jpg
Truck's running like a champ. Starts right up, even in this bitter cold. No plug-in necessary. About all I've been doing is adding Schaeffer's SoyShield (http://www.schaefferoil.com/soyshield.html) to the fuel when I fill it up to prevent waxing/gelling and for some additional lubricity/cetane.
LTb1ow

Details on the setup? I know my dad would love to get his to sound more like a proper diesel
The_Bishop
01-07-2018, 02:31 PM
First thing that can be done to add some sound: behind the fender on the passenger side is an intake 'horn'. You can get at it by pulling a few screws out of the wheel well liner. It's in place with those ribbed push pins, so just pull it off. That'll add some rumble. If you want more than that, then pick up the Profab intake tube (https://profabperformance.com/jm2/index.php/our-products/colorado-canyon/product/120-colorado-air-intake-tube) and make sure you click the 'PCV fitting' option. On top of the sound, throttle response seems a bit quicker to my SOTP dyno.
Edit: You can also pull off the plastic engine cover and remove all that foam sound deadener on top of the motor. That helps a bunch, too. I put the cover back on after removing the sound deadener.
I highly recommend getting an oil separator for the crankcase vent. Keep all that oily crud out of the intake tract!

Are those wheels color matched, or just that awesome? Looks great, I've been eyeballing these more and more lately, but the prices are absurd.

Yes sir, Method Grid Titanium.
I wanted bronze ones for much jeep, but didn’t want to drop coin on it while my car still doesn’t run.
They look good!

Nah, not yet. I like the warranty too much. Very damned tempting, though.

They're the 'Titanium' finish in the middle, which turned out to be a pretty close match to the stock paint.

Thanks! The bronze wheels look damned sharp but the titanium fits my truck's color better, or at least what I was looking to do with the truck.

At the dealership getting an ECM update/Recall done and a complimentary oil change. Very weird having someone else work on my truck, and I don't like it much.

Well, all things must come to an end I suppose.
No more mini-durty after tomorrow. Had a few issues with the truck (all emissions system stuff) that loaded the hell out of the DPF which made it require 3 service regens to get back to normal, and the DEF injector got clogged with crystalized DEF that thankfully I was able to clean out.
With the EPA crackdown on diesel shops there's no way to 'repair' the emissions stuff any longer.
Still sticking with a Colorado, just a gasser. The new emissions stuff on the diesels makes them not really worth it unless you do a lot of towing/long trips and now that I'm retired I don't do the long trips regularly enough to keep the DPF system happy.
Truck looks odd being mostly returned to stock.

Ironically, or maybe not, but my dad is going thru the same deal with his. Loves the truck but hates how much time it spends at the dealer.

Yeah, big fan of the Colorado. The size works for me.
The Diesel is real nice, on paper. The reality is the emissions systems are a freakin' nightmare.
A few things have been pushing me to trade in the Diesel.
Adding diesel fuel additive every time I filled up started getting old, and it's needed with the modern common rail stuff to keep the injectors/injection pumps alive.
Nobody local stocks the dexos 2 oil, or the oil filters, or the fuel filters. Need to mail order all the maintenance stuff unless I feel like paying 2X the price at the dealer, who may or may not have it in stock. The same dealership who's parts guy told me that Dexos1v2 is the same as Dexos2... Yeah, no it isn't. The wrong oil trashes the DPF, and the list price on that pipe is close to $2k.
Going on 20-30 minute drives to let the DPF finish burning off when it's doing a regen is a PITA. The fact that the truck doesn't give you any indication of a regen starting or the need for one sucks, I had to put in an add-on gauge for that.
Parts availability is scary low, even for the scarcity going on now due to the covid crap. Know of a few folks who had their trucks sitting in dealer lots for months waiting on parts that should be readily available, like diesel emissions system sensors. I don't think the parts thing is going to get much better thanks to the fact that the 2.8 duramax is getting chopped from the engine lineup, probably next year.
This all pointed to 'GTFO' while the trade-in was good. What opened the door is the DPF issue that needed 3 service regens to clear, despite no engine codes or signs of anything wrong until the truck told me I had 100 miles until lawn-ornament status. So I'm GTFO.

Ouch. How many miles did you have on it? Knock on wood, I've run into zero issues so far with my Sierra Dmax.

Just over 37k. It's been great while I was regularly doing a 50+ mile highway commute once in a while, but lately it's been a ton of short-drive kid-to-school sort of stuff, which isn't a healthy environment for the new emissions loaded diesels. Don't get me wrong: It's a good powerplant as long as you do at least *some* highway driving on a regular basis. My current use just doesn't fit the design parameters for these motors any more, even if it took a year of short-drive shenanigans to make an issue pop up. Probably, if we didn't have the lockdown to contend with so there would have been a few longish road trips added to the use, it would never have been a factor.

Your experience is why I recommend against new diesels. Sucks tuning is non-existent, it’s the only way to feasibly own a new diesel especially with short commutes.
The_Bishop
02-07-2021, 07:42 PM
Yeah. When I go it the option to tune and 'lighten' the truck was still there, but I didn't want to toss the warranty in the trash, so I held off thinking I'd do it after the warranty was over. Then the EPA went nuts, thanks to the wonderful 'coal rolling' jackasses out there who gave diesels a bad name in the first place.
I hope they find a better way to handle emissions on the diesels or I'm thinking oil-burners are going to be a thing of the past. Know a few guys with heavy duty trucks that opted for the gas motor option despite the added fuel costs just to avoid the overcomplicated diesel emissions crap.

It wouldn't be a complete post without a shot of the new truck:

Didn't even have it home for 5 minutes before stuff started happening. Front air dam fell off (whoops), tonneau cover got installed and my currently-dirty-but-I-put-'em-in-anyway husky floor liners to keep all the slush and salt out of the rugs. It was a lot of fun doing this outside in 20 degree weather.
Why didn't I clean the floor liners? Well, because if I dared turn on my outside hose it would spray ice cubes and it's really hard to wash things with those also I really don't need an ice rink right in front of my house. When I mentioned washing them in the bathtub to my wife I got a look that could only be described as 'not good.'

Simple green, a stiff brush, and some elbow grease and my weather techs come out looking great.
I usually top them with some watered down Chemical guys VRP. Gives it back some shine but its not as slippery as full strength VRP.
What do you coat with after you steam clean them?

Simple green works well but I can't stand the smell personally. I just use aerospace 303 for most plastics/rubbers etc.... with a dash of cherry extract.... :bertstare:

Got to say, not a fan of protectant on foot-related surfaces, like mats or pedals. Too slippery. Getting them clean is usually enough for me.
Would like for the weather to warm up and dry out so I can get the side steps back on the new truck, and need to get some tires on the method wheels so I can put them back on.

Thanks. I miss the mileage of the diesel, but not the short-trip diesel emissions system headaches. Sadly, the weight reduction tuning options have all disappeared with the EPA crackdown.
It's a lot quicker off the line, though. 308 HP and the eight speed transmission get things moving.
